Benjamin Lewis Leavell was the brother of Martha J. Leavell, born 1819 in Christian Co. KY, m. 5 May 1837 there to Jefferson Moore. They were the children of Benjamin Leavell and Elizabeth Willis. But I had him down as Benjamin Samuel Leavell, husband of Elijzabeth J. Moore, who was born 1839. He's the right age, the right birthplace, the right death area...just the wrong wife (and she's a Moore, the surname mentioned by Sue above). A second wife? A mistake? A coincidence?

Rev. Mr. T. Levell:
Dear Sir, -- I wrote some ten days ago to Cap. Poythress and made him an offer of $6,250-- for Kittewon. I have not yet received an answer. Did I understand you to say that the property would again be offered at Auction and on this day 15th Decr? I did intend leaving home on Saturday to attend the sale to day. If no sale has yet been effected, be pleased to write me a few lines on the subject. If the Cap. Refuses my offer, say to him I will give him $6,500. Six thousand five hundred dollars. We will execute a Bond, satisfactorily endorsed, and a Deed of Trust on the property to secure the purchase Money -- I have received propositions from a couple of Gentlemen relative to the purchase of a tract of land on the RappaK* called Bowlin -- belonging to my Wife. So soon as we can sell that Farm or the property here, we would prefer making a payment of 2 or 3 thousand dollars. Do not make this offer till you can ascertain he will not take what I have offered in my letter to him. Should I not be able to get Kitten, I do not know but that I will immediately make an offer for “North Bend.” Please answer this as soon as convenient. -- I saw your eldest Brother a few day since, he said Your relations in Spotsa were well.
Very Respectfully
Your friend &c-------------

P. S. If the above should be
Refused ascertain what is the
least Cap P. will take for the land.
Notes:

Club owner sentenced in drug conspiracy
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
SPOKANE, Wash. -- A Spokane businessman has been sentenced to 12 1/2 years in prison for directing a Canadian marijuana smuggling operation and laundering money. ......Corey S. Leavell, 26, pleaded guilty to conspiring to sell more than a ton of marijuana smuggled into the United States from British Columbia. Federal prosecutors allege the operation imported $6 million worth of potent "B.C. bud" marijuana. .....In sentencing Leavell on Thursday, U.S. District Court Judge Justin Quackenbush said the drug operation was the largest he had seen during 25 years on the federal bench. .....As part of the plea agreement, Leavell will forfeit a $300,000 ranch home in nearby Spangle, a duplex in north Spokane, land in Spokane Valley, a condominium in Mexico and a new house on Spokane's South Hill. .....Leavell used some of his drug profits to buy a 51 percent ownership in a downtown Spokane nightclub and start a hydro-seeding business, court documents said. .....Leavell acknowledged using his businesses to launder money he got from the marijuana smuggling ring. .....Leavell was indicted in April on charges of conspiracy to distribute 1,000 kilograms or more of marijuana and 12 counts of money laundering. He pleaded guilty in June to conspiracy to import more than 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) of marijuana. .....Leavell's source of supply for the marijuana wasn't disclosed at Thursday sentencing or earlier hearings. Details of the plea agreement were sealed from public inspection. --Information from: The Spokesman-Review, http://www.spokesmanreview.com

JAMES LEAVELL
JEdwa22168 at aol.com on 9 June 2001:
I'm looking for any information on the Edwards family that lived in Gallatin County from about 1869 to 1880 or so. Rich Edwards is shown in the 1870 census for Gallatin County as living with his wife Missouri (King), his daughter Mary, his brother James and Mary A. Tally, whom I have reason to believe is Richard and James' mother. There was also a son, James born about 1870 after the census was taken.
...Rich died in March of 1880, just a month or so after his son Walter was born. I have not however, been able to obtain a death record on him nor does he show up in any of the Cemetary books for the area. The 1880 census for Gallatin County shows Missouri boarding with Edward and Mary J. Peebles. She has her son Walter and daughter Mary living with her at the time. The family story is that she had left her son James with the Leavell family. Sometime after that, Missouri moved to New Madrid, Missouri with John S. Frohock. She never went back for her son, James, so my assumption has been that he was raised by the Leavell family. Is anyone researching the Leavell family that may have come across any information on this?

"LEVEL, JAMES M., was born Dec., 1817, in Pickaway county, Ohio. His parents died when he was a child, and he was brought to Sangamon county by Abel Powell. They arrived June 27, 1828. James M. Level was married Dec. 2, 1855, to Margaret Sawyers, who was born Nov. 3, 1830, in Fayette county. They had six children, two of whom died--
.....CLARISSA E. in her eight year; and WILLIAM T. in infancy. The other four--
.....JOHN S., born April 5, 1858;
.....JAMES H., born September 23, 1859;
.....MARY E., born July 15, 1861; and
.....CLARA M.; born May 28, 1866, live with their parents. James M. Level resides on the farm settled by Levi Cantrall in 1820. It is adjoining Cantrall on the southwest.
.....James M. Level remembers that about 1838 he helped to cut wheat with the old-fashioned sickle, or reap-hook, tramped it out with horses, fanned the chaff out by two men taking a linen sheet and using to for a fan, while a third one stood on some elevated place, and poured the wheat and chaff down before the fan. This fanning operation cannot be described to a person who never saw it; and therefore ought to be enacted at some Old Settlers' meeting. He then drove a four-horse team and hauled fifty bushels of the wheat to St. Louis, one hundred miles, and sold it for twenty-five cents per bushel. It required from ten to twelve days to make the trip."--HISTORY OF THE EARLY SETTLERS OF SANGAMON COUNTY, ILLINOIS by John Carroll Power, page 451.

JOHN F. LEAVELL
WILLIAM HEBB. -- Among the well known residents of the town of Albany, Indiana, the gentleman for whom this sketch is prepared is deserving of especial mention. Mr. Hebb was born in Preston County, Va., December 25, 1825, and is a son of Robert and Nancy (Evans) Hebb, natives of the same state, where they married and began domestic life on a farm in the county of Preston. They removed to Monongalia County in 1829, and there remained until their deaths, in the years 1852 and 1882, respectively. Robert and Nancy Hebb were for many years members of the Methodist church and were much respected in the locality where they lived for their many excellent traits of character, Their family were as follows: William, Sybrant, Jehu, Sarah; Martha, Anna, and Virginia living; Joseph, John, David and Josina, deceased. William Hebb was. reared on the home farm in his native state, and at the age of twenty-two years, began the battle of life for himself as an agriculturist. When he had attained his twenty-fourth year, he learned the trade of carpentering, which he successfully followed at different places until 1886. In 1854 he left his Virginia-home and emigrating westward, located in Randolph county, Indiana, where he resided until 188 3, at which time he became a resident of the flourishing town of Albany, where, for a period of eight years, .he was engaged in fine carpenter work and contracting. At the end of that time, he became associated with his son in the harness business, with which line he was identified until March 1, 1893, when he retired from active life and .at the present writing is not engaged in any undertaking. While a resident of the county of Randolph, he acquired considerable local prominence, and served the people for eleven years as justice of the peace, an office to which he was also elected after becoming a resident of Albany, holding the same in this town two and one-half terms. His fraternal relationship is with the, I. O. O. F., and in religion, is a prominent member of the Christian church, contributing most liberally of his means to the local congregation with which he is identified. He is held-in the highest esteem as an earnest and conscientious gentleman, and in the true sense of the word is one of Albany's representative citizens. Mr. Hebb was married December 25, 1851, in West Virginia to Miss Sarah M. Jones, and a family of eight children have been born to their union: Adolph, John F., Daniel R., Adelaid, deceased; Clayton, Lilly, wife of Thomas Cary; Grant, deceased, and Emma, wife of W. Hodge. The mother of these children departed this life March, 1875, and in September of the following year, Mr. _ Herb's second marriage was consummated with Mrs. Maria Leaven, widow of the late JOHN F. LEAVELL: two children, Rufus and Charles, lave been born to this union.

With the savings accumulated from these efforts, the help of a small scholarship, and a loan from the Rotary Club, she was able to enroll in the School of Music at the University of Kansas. She reminisced that this experience taught her much about life. "It was a wonderful piano department and for someone who loved music as I did, it was almost heaven—even if I did have to watch my nickels and survive mostly on soup and cornbread." A job at a local radio station playing piano in a trio at eight in the morning helped pay the bills. She was awarded a Bachelor of Music degree in three years, graduating at the depth of the depression.
.....With loans to repay, she established her own piano studio in Tulsa where she taught and gave recitals. During this time she was active in the Piano Study Club and the Hycheka Club and performed numerous concerts. She was also a member of the original board of Concertime.
.....Twice widowed, she is the wife of Colonel Francis J. Wilson, retired regional head of the U.S. Corps of Engineers, who was one of the principal architects of the Kerr-McClellan Arkansas Navigation project. With her first husband, the late John H. Leavell, a M.I.T. trained mining engineer and U.S. Petroleum attaché, she traveled extensively in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. After his death, she successfully managed their widespread interests in mining and oil and gas, causing those various enterprises to flourish. Her second husband, the late George A. Stebbins, was an expert on Oriental culture. On one of their extended visits to the Far East, she was trapped in a Saigon hotel during the 1963 coup against the Diem regime.
.....Her cultural and charitable interests are numerous and varied, having served on the boards of the Children's Day Nursery, Tulsa Town Hall, Gilcrease Museum and the Tulsa Philharmonic. She has served on the board of Philbrook Museum of Art and was an advisory director of the Tulsa Ballet Theatre.
.....She is founder and principal trustee of the Patti Johnson Wilson Foundation, which she established in 1972. This perpetual trust was established to provide scholarships for needy college students. The foundation has awarded hundreds of scholarships over the years and continues to be an activity of primary interest to Mrs. Wilson. Based upon her experience, she recognizes the importance of hard work and a good education.

The name, Hull, is believed to have originated in Yorkshire, England, where the city named Hull is a seaport on the river named Hull. There are still a lot of Hulls in Ripley County, and about 2% of all Americans have this surname, or about one in every 5, 000. Being a common name does not make it any less honorable or important, it does however, indicate they have been prolific." http://216.239.33.100/search?q=cache:8eTEn-PM6J8C:home.sprintmail.com/~johnamyers/rhull.htm+Levell+family+Indiana&hl=en&ie=UTF-8
