DESCENDANTS OF JOSEPH LEAVELL

by Jane A. Leavell

Generation No. 1

1. JOSEPH LEAVELL was born Abt. 1772 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, USA, and died Abt. 1822 in Jefferson County, Kentucky, USA. He married MOLLY SNYDER May 04, 1803 in Madison County, Virginia, USA, daughter of VALENTINE SNIDER and ELIZABETH WAGNER. She was born Abt. 1780 in Virgina, USA, and died Abt. 1822 in Jefferson County, Kentucky, USA.

Notes for JOSEPH LEAVELL:
Joseph Leavile, born circa 1780, married to Mary Snyder on 5-4-1803 by minister Wm. Carpenter, per MADISON CO. VA MARRIAGES 1792-1850. Also: Joseph's daughter, Nancy, was married to Samuel Spicer 15 APR 1830. (Spicer Genforum entry has a Nancy Levitt marrying Samuel Spicer in Culpeper Co. VA on 4/15/1830.) Samuel Spicer is buried in Walker's Church Cemetery in Orange County, Virginia. Believe Leavell family lived in Orange County (Ellen Schwartz schwartz at sccoast.net).

See NANCY LEAVELL on my MISCELLANEOUS LEAVELL DATA website for another Spicer marriage.

Notes for MOLLY SNYDER:
Per Jeannie Gorlick, "There is no actual list of Valentine's children. His estate bond lists Valentine and Simon with bondsmen Sabastian Martz and William Pence. PA German records list two Valentine's, but only one was in Rockingham Co., VA. Only other possible parent for Mary is Martin Schneider and wife (record of church at Peaked Mountain), but they had children later, according to baptisms...Mary Snyder m. Joseph Leavile on 04 May 1803 Madison Co., VA (L.D.S. computer, CD Madison Co Marriages) Mary is my line, and I have no other possible father for her."

Children of JOSEPH LEAVELL and MOLLY SNYDER are:
…..i…..NANCY LEAVELL, m. SAMUEL SPICER, April 15, 1830, Culpeper County, Virginia, USA.

Notes for NANCY LEAVELL:
But see Moses Spicer. Is it a coincidence that both marry a Nancy Leavell, and Moses has a son named Samuel?

LEAVELL, SPICER posted by Ellen Schwartz on Sunday, January 30, 2000
Leavell, Joseph, c. 1780. Need to identify Joseph's parents and his place of birth and origin. Joseph's daughter, Nancy, was married to Samuel Spicer 15 APR 1830. Samuel Spicer is buried in Walker's Church Cemetery in Orange County. Believe Leavell family lived in Orange County.

Notes for JURIETTA BURKE:
.....I saw your genealogy message today concerning your interest in more data on the family of Nancy Weaver. I am a direct ancester of Nancy Weaver and my maiden name is Leavel. My paternal grandfather's grandmother was Jurietta, or Jurella Burke, daughter of William Burke and Nancy Weaver. I do not have any documents to prove this, but my grandfather, Robert Floyd Leavel, left information he had gathered on tape. I'll tell you what I have concerning Nancy Weaver. According to my grandfather, besides Jurietta, or Jurella (I see different spellings on various documents) Burke, they also had a son named Thomas Burke. He married a Nancy Snyder. They had another son named John Wesley Burke. They also had a daughter named Nancy Burke who married a John McCastle Dongue Nichol on September 4, 1837 in Augusta county. They also had another daughter named Mrs. Frank Kiger, but my grandfather did not list her first name. Jurietta or Jurella Burke married James Leavel. One of their sons, also named James married Ottie Britt and one of their children was my grandfather, Robert F. Leavel. Hope this helps. I am sorry I do not have any source documents to prove anything as of yet, just the word of my grandfather who dabbled in genealogy. I hope to get documents to "prove" all these relationships eventually.
.....How are you related to Nancy Weaver and William Burke. I guess William Burke and Nancy Weaver are my 3x great grandparents.
.....How do you fit in? Are you a direct decendent of Nancy Weaver? Since you last name is Leavell, perhaps you are also related to James Leavel.
.....Please let me hear from you. Thanks! Kay Miller My e-mail address is
KKmil at aol.com.

The Comora (Clatterbuck)Leavel (1 Sep 1848-18 May 1910) I have marr. William Alexander Leavell( 18 Jan 1872,Culpeper Co. Book 2, pp105. She was a dau of Walker Lindsay Clat-terbuck and Mary Ann Broyles. The couple had eleven children.

Much of my data came from the late Ezelle F. Williams and wife, Mildred. Joan Harmon has done extensive work of the descendants of John C'buck of Hampshire, England. The Brile,Broyle,Breil,Breyel lines in Va. began in 1717 and can be seen in the Madison Co. connections with Blanken-baker, Fleishman, Wayland, etc. My great gm Damsel (Clatterbuck) Kilby was an older sister of Walker.

Notes for CRIMORA LINDSEY CLATTERBUCK:
The info below came to me from the late Ezelle F. Williams and his widow Mildred of Leon, Va. in Madison Co. Ezelle is in the Clatterbuck line.
Crimora "Crim" Leavell, according to my late mother was the first person to die in those days of what people now call cancer. She wasn't the first cancer victim but it was called other things in the decades before.

Dear Jane:
...I was so excited to get your e-mail! Looks like we belong to the same line of decendents. I have lots more information for you which I will get together later today and send you. I do believe we also come from the family of John LaVelle who supposedly came from Normandy, France along with a brother named Edward in the latter 1600's. You are right, the Leavel family is hard to trace due to so many spellings of the name. My grandfather just used one "l" but many of the family in Virginia and elsewhere use 2 "l's". I have been to the graves of my great-grand parents, James W. and Ottie (her real name is Rebecca) Britt. In fact, I have a beautiful picture of "Ottie" when she was 16 years old, taken right after the civil war.
...My grandfather, Robert Floyd Leavel left quite a bit of information on his decendents. I will look at your web site to see if I have any information you don't have. I need some time to get it together and send you more information. I have been to the grave site of James W. and Ottie Britt at Frieden's Church, which I believe is located in Timberville, VA. Several of their children who died young are also buried there. Since I have it in front of me, I will go ahead and list all of James W. and Ottie Britt's children:

1. George Walter Kemper Leavel, born November 3, 1873
2. William Leroy Otis Leavel. born January 15, 1875
3. James Asher Hamilton Leavel, born November 5, 1878
4. Joseph Henry Michael Leavel, born September 16, 1883.
5. John Robert Floyd Leavel (my grandfather) born December 27, 1888
6. Valle Porter Ottway Leavel. born August 14, 1892
7. Samuel Earl Edward Leavel, born Feb 13, 1894

Deaths: William Leroy Otis died Dec 13, 1884.
James Asher Hamilton died Sept 28, 1900
Samuel Earl died Dec 10, 1900

Anyway, hope you can use this information. All of this comes from my grandfather's records he left behind. Thank goodness he was interested in genealogy! I do not have any documents proving the above dates but I can prove the dates of birth and deaths of Ottie and James W. and the three that died young since I have seen their grave stones and wrote down this information.
…..Thanks so much for e-mailing me. In our research maybe we can help each other in the future. I have been dabbling in genealogy for about 2 years. It's been great fun. I hope to get to the Shenandoah Valley area of Virginia to do more research one of these days. (I live in Knoxville, TN so it is a bit of a trip).
…..Anyway, I really appreciate your information and I'll send you some info from my grandfather's records and other records I have found later today after I look at your web site to see what you have already. Take care. Kay (Leavel) Miller.

24 July 2002
Dear Jane:
...Sorry, I haven't forgotten about sending you info on the Leavels but I had to go out of town to an exhibition in Murfreesboro, TN and just got back. I am leaving for Florida on Thursday and won't be able to get the information together until next week.
...I have looked at some of your web site (what a great web site!) and have looked at part of the info on the Leavels. My printer stopped working so I have to get it fixed so I can print out some of that Leavel information.
...You might be interested in knowing that my 1st cousin, Beth Leavel, has a starring role in the Broadway plany 42nd St. She was on the "Today" show on Saturday singing a duet from the show. She is the daughter of Lynn Leavel, whose father is (my grandfather) Robert Floyd, whose parents were James W. and Ottie Britt.
...Well, take care and I'll e-mail you as soon as possible on further information.
Kay Miller

These obituaries were newspaper clippings found in the back of a very old bible.
Tuesday, Oct. 2.
Mr. James Asher Leavel, son of Mr. James W. and Mrs. Ottie Leavel, was born November 5th, 1878; died Sept. 28th, 1900, aged 21 years, 10 months and 23 days; entered the Kingdom of Grace Sept. 14th, and was received into church felowship Sept. 16th 1899, by Rev. J. Harry Smith, of Port Republic. The above is a brief history of one of the most popular young man of the Rockland vicinity. Three weeks previous to his death Mr. Leavel took to his bed, having contracted typhoid fever. he expressed the belief that he would not get well. Hope lingered in his parents' hearts, and everything was done to comfort him; a trained nurse was employed who did her best for him, but alas, the Master wanted him for a tenant of the heavenly home. His remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Friedens church on Sunday, the service being held at 11 o'clock, and conducted by his pastor, Reve. Mr. Smith. The Union Cornet Bank, of Mill Creek, of which the deceased was a leading emeber, escorted the remains in full uniform of blue cloth with gilt braid. Eight of them preceded the casket, bearing a pillow of white tube roses and six others carried the coffin, which contained a number of beautifuol pieces of various designs. One of the larges assemblies ever seen at the church was present to pay tribute to his memory. The minister, after a brief by expresssive introduction, used the words of Matt. x : 29,30, for his text: "Are not two sparrow sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered." Universal Divine Providence was the preacher's theme, and most tenderly did he show how God ruleth all things for our good. As the cortege marched up the aisle, the choir sang the appropriate song, "Death is only a Dream," followed by, "Asleep in Jesus," also, "Shall we meet beyond the river?" and as the grave was being filled, "Nearer my God to thee" was given, while the expression of sorrow from the large company testified to the esteem in which the departed was held. He is survived by his parents and five brothers who keenly feel his absence, as he was an affectional son and brother, and always ready to assist them when in need.

Harrisonburg Rockingham Register, Friday Jan 12, 1900
WEDNESDAY, January 10,.- Mrs. Ella A. Leavel, widow of Mr. T. Frank Leavel departed this life on Monday afternoon at half-past three o'clock, aged 57 years, 1 month, and 20 days.
.....She is survived by five children, Thomas, Leonard, Charles, and Mary Blanche, of Mt. Crawford, and Mrs. P. A. (Florence) Clarke, of Baltimore, all of whom were with her at the close of life.
.....Mrs. Leavel had been afflicted with rheumatism for many years, and had not walked a step for eight years; and for several months had been confined to her bed, when heart dropsy developed and the current of life ceased.
.....Twenty years ago, by the death of her husband, she was left to train her children, and she faithfully performed the arduous though loving duty. Fifteen years ago she embraced religion, united with the Methodist church, and lived an exemplary life, enjoying in her home the prayer-meeting services held by her Christian sisters in their frequent visits.
.....Her aged mother, Mrs. A. B. Mundy, of Stanardsville, was too feeble to come to see her. The burial took place today from the church of her choice, Rev. R. L. Fultz, pastor, who delivered an excellent address from Job 14, 14 - "if a man die shall he live again?" The opening hymn, "Asleep in Jesus," was a beautiful prelude to the grand awakening - "When I shall see Him face to face" (an exclamation she frequently used) - which was sung as the earthly mantle was gently piled upon her bosom. The following; brethren were selected as her pall-bearers: S. C. Switzer, J. W. Sherman, F. H. Lago, C. C. Proctor, J. S. Funkhouser, W. E. Shinnick.

5.6 miles southwest of Culpeper, on the south side of Route 29, the cemetery had a wire fence around it and one stone in it, bearing the names of Annie and Booten B. Leavell, and her birth and death dates. Under Booten's name was the date "Aug. 26, 1859," and a worker mistakenly listed the "graveyard" as having an oldest grave of 1859, when that was clearly Booten's birthdate. Booten was listed as owner of the graveyard.

Meets Death In Luray
.....John G. Evans, a native of Lynchburg, who has been living in Luray ten or twelve years, most of the time conducting the restaurant business near the passenger station, was almost instantly killed on the Norfolk and Western Railway tracks not more than fifty feet from his place of business last Saturday evening about six o’clock, while attempting to cross the railroad in front of freight train No. 88, northbound. He had just left his restaurant and was going westward over the tracks when the train struck him, knocking him from the track breaking his ribs, inflicting a fractured skull, badly mashing the left side of his face and perhaps internally injuring him. His injuries were of such a nature that he lived only about twenty minutes. Hubert Purdham, a section man, who was watching the crossing at the time, tried to pull Mr. Evans off of the track when he saw the danger the latter was in, and in his efforts sustained severe injuries and was confined to his bed for several days as a result of his experience. A coroner’s jury was empaneled [sic] soon after the accident, the verdict being that no one was to blame for the killing. On various occasions Mr. Evans had been rescued from near death at the same place by Watchmen D. D. Armstrong. The hourly passing of trains had apparently rendered him careless of the danger of attempting to cross the track in front of passing trains. He had often been seen in apparent abstraction standing on the railroad tracks oblivious of the danger attending his action. The restaurant business conducted by Mr. Evans had been a profitable one. The body was shipped to Lynchburg for burial on Monday morning. He was about 70 years of age and unusually active and well preserved for his age.
.....“Hot Tom” as he was familiarly known to almost everybody in Luray, filled a unique place in the life of this town, was loyal to his friends, a boon companion and convivial spirit. His apparent weakness was in a measure overlooked when his genial jovial spirit entered into a cursory estimate of the man. A character who apparently took delight in his business during most of the time he has been conducting the same in Luray, he nevertheless at times gave little heed to the things that made for business as modernly guarded and watched.
