MARSHALL FAMILY OF HARRISON CO. KY AND INDIANA

by Jane A. Leavell

Generation No. 1

1. RALPH MARSHALL or RAPHAEL MARSHALL died August 11, 1833 per the family Bible transcribed at http://www.indianahistory.org/our-services/books-publications/magazines/online-connections/general-records/Two%20Marshall%20Bibles.pdf. We believe he was born abt. 1773. Per Ashley Family Tree at http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/11548870/person/1062999895?ssrc= he married MARY WINTMORE 09 May 1763 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. She was born abt. 1775 and died 18 May 1825. The family Bible has a "Mary Marshall was born the 19 day of Oct. 1752." Other very early Bible entries: Mary Marshall deceased May the 18 1825; Ralph Marshall deceased August the 11 1833; Hugh Marshall deceased the 11 November 1838

http://familytrees.genopro.com/beltster/Marshall/ claims Ralph Raphael Marshall is crossed out in the family Bible, and James was an only child. But the family Bible has a William Marshall born 30 Aug 1789, so there was at least one other child! Also, the transcription says "Hugh" is crossed out and "Ralph" written in.

See Myra A. Pavey's tree at Rootsweb.com
She says, "21 Sep 1844A child was married no spouse name
Bertha Hiner Callahan said her brother Samual Hiner found (in 1960) that Tucky Ho was part of Chief Justice Marshall's 1,000 acre plantation, came to Shelby County from Cynthiana KY. Another note states that James Marshall or Jasper Newton Marshall came from Tuckaho, VA, plantation of Thomas Jefferson."

Children of RALPH MARSHALL include:
2......i......JAMES MARSHALL, b. November 12, 1781, Pennsylvania; d. July 14, 1866, Shelby County, Indiana.
.....ii.....WILLIAM MARSHALL, born 30 Aug 1789, on 05 Jul 1818 married RACHEL MCDUFFIE, born 16 June 1798. The family Bible has a Rachel Marshall dying 22 Jan 1846; presumably that's her. On 08 Aug 1847 he married Mary G. Gaffin, born 25 Apr 1814, and had 2 more children. The 1850 and 1880 census are clearly him, but what's with the ones inbetween? Is that him? If so, who's THAT Rachel?

.....iii.....ANAH MARSHALL. Per Marshall family Bible, she married DANIEL BUZZARD. Anah deceased 30 Oct 1823. Children: Lucinda Buzzard, 22 December 1811; Jacob Buzzard, 27 March 1813; George H. Buzzard, 10 May 1815; Lary Buzzard, 21 Feb 1818; Preston Buzzard, 26 Jan 1820; Polly Ann Buzzard, 20 Jun 1822; Sarah Buzzard, died 19 Feb 1819. There's a Granvill I. Buzzard, born 23 May 1840, but that's so late I question whether he's a grandchild--in the 1850 census he lives with George and Preston, but they live with Elizabeth Buzzard, age 53. Based on the children's early birthdates, I'm assuming Anah was a child of Ralph Marshall, but maybe she's the child of the mysterious Hugh Marshall who died 1838. This line needs more research!

Generation No. 2

2. JAMES MARSHALL (RALPH) was born November 12, 1781 in Lampeter Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and died July 14, 1866 in Shelby County, Indiana. He married SUSANNAH BAKER November 27, 1805 in Harrison County, Kentucky, daughter of PETER BAKER. She was born November 16, 1787 in Lampeter Township, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and died March 16, 1873 in Shelby County, Indiana. Birth locations are from http://www.laufferproductions.com/Surnames/11/38217.htm

Notes for JAMES MARSHALL:
Blue Ridge Cemetery, Liberty Township, Shelby County, Indiana, does have a tombstone for a James Marshall, but he was born 1786 and died 1866.

Allegedly, James named Cynthiana, Shelby, IN in honor of his native town of Cynthiana, Harrison County, Kentucky...but we thought he was born in PA. He sold land in Harrison County, Indiana, in 1836.

James and his wife appeared in the Orange Twp., Rush County, Indiana 1850 census. The east line of the Blue Ridge Cemetery is the Rush County line.

CENSUS-1860: Indiana, Rush Co, Orange Twp, pg. 0677. James Marshall age 78, b. PA; Susanna Marshall age 72, b. PA; Cathrine Marshall age 40, b. KY.

A James Marshall appears in Rush County in ORIGINAL LANDOWNERS from TRACT BOOK, p. 1, 13 December 1825

CHADWICK'S HISTORY OF SHELBY COUNTY, INDIANA (1909) says James Marshall named Cynthiana. A J.N. Marshall owned a business there. On page 156, it mentions that J.N. Marshall was zealous in the Methodist Episcopal Church built in 1854 in Cynthiana, but the society never became large or prosperous. Yager and Marshall was a general store in 1909. Richard Marshall owned a saw-mill. I.W. Marshall owned a business.

Per Myra Jo A Pavey , Bertha Hiner Callahan said her bother Samual Hiner found (in 1960) that Tucky Ho was part of Chief Justice Marshall's 1,000 acre plantation, came to Shelby County from Cynthiana KY. Another note states that James Marshall or Jasper Newton Marshall came from Tuckaho, VA, plantation of Thomas Jefferson....Hum...need to check this one! This site also lists James's father as Ralph Marshall and his wife as Susannah Baker.

A Robert Marshall Jr. appears on page 34, 14 Oct. 1834, of Marice Holmes' EARLY LANDOWNERS OF SHELBY COUNTY (1973) Agnes L. Kendall's GRANT COUNTY INDIANA RECORDS-NEWSPAPER ITEMS, 1949, has a Robt. Marshall born 1 March 1806 in Pennsylvania, died 13 April 1895 IA. He had 3 wives.

I have Marshalls in my line who lived in Howard Co. Indiana which is adjancent to Grant Co. My great great great grandfather was Marion Marshall. According to the information that I have he was born around 1845 and married Julia Seward about 1865. They have two children that I know of Eva Bell Marshall, my great great grandmother and Alvin Elmer Marshall.
Eva Bell Marshall married Harry Harris. Alvin Elmer Marshall married Cora A. Harris. Harry Harris and Cora A. Harris were brother and sister as well.

Excerpt from the History of Rush County, Indiana, by Brant & Fuller, published in 1888, pages 479-480 for Orange Township:
.....ELI GREEN. -- The paternal grandparent of the subject of this sketch was General Nathaniel Green of Revolutionary fame, and the father of the subject was John Green, a carpenter by trade, and a farmer by occupation. John was an early settler of Kentucky, where the greater part of his life was spent. He married for his first wife Rachel Williams, unto whom was born the following offspring: Thomas, Sallie, Charles and Newel. For a second wife he married Rebecca Snider; the second marriage was blessed by the following children: Eli, born January 27, 1811; Polly, born November 28, 1813; Jonathan, born December 31, 1815; William, born January 8, 1818, and Absalom, born January 23, 1820. The mother of these children was the daughter of henry and Mary Snider who were of German Lineage, and she was born June 30, 1782, and was united in marriage with John Green, November 19, 1807; her death occurred February 14, 1831. John, her husband, died in Ohio, March 5, 1823; he had removed with his family from Kentucky to Ohio, about 1813, and shortly after his death, his widow with her family, removed to Indiana, and in 1824, settled in Shelby County, settling on Blue River, and here the widow lived till occurred her death.
.....Her eldest son Eli, who is our subject, was born in Madison County, Kentucky; when but an infant his father made the removal to Ohio, and when he was thirteen his widowed mother made the removal to Indiana. He was reared on the farm, and received a limited education in old subscription schools of the various vicinities in which he lived in early life. He has devoted his life to farming, and has experienced much hard toil, and a hard battle with life, for he was born a poor boy, but nevertheless born with an ambitious and industrious spirit, which has gained for him property and many ardent friends. In November of 1834, he was united in marriage with Mary B. Marshall. She was born in Harrison County, Kentucky, and was the daughter of James and Susannah Marshall. Unto this marriage were born: Eliza, April 16, 1839; Adalino, November 15, 1841; William Dallas, July 11, 1844, and Arthur, November 15, 1851. For one year after the marriage of our subject he lived in Shelby County, and then removed to Rush County, where he has since resided, and followed agricultural pursuits. He has always been a main factor in whatever communities he has resided, and has always been an industrious, energetic and progressive man. He has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for many years, and has always advocated and aided churches, schools and public improvements. He has always been reserved, however in life, and has never aspired to public life, but has preferred the life of an independent farmer. In politics he has never taken an active part, but is an ardent Republican, having never voted with any other party since the organization of the Republican Party. He is now in his seventy-seventh year, and while far along in the decline of life he is surrounded by property and many faithful friends.

Daniel was killed in an accident at the Tile Factory at Curtisville, Tipton County, Indiana

Elwood Daily Record, 24 Sep 1906, Elwood,Madison Co.,Indiana
CURTISVILLE MAN MEETS SHOCKING DEATH SATURDAY
"Caught by a Belt and Drawn Under Pulley Wheel"
EVERY BONE WAS CRUSHED IN HIS BODY And HE NEVER REGAINED CONSCIOUSNESS
One of the most shocking accidents that ever occurred at Curtisville, the little village five miles north of the city on the Panhandle, took place at 4:30 o'clock Saturday evening in the tile mill, the chief industry of the place. Daniel Marshall who was employed in the tile factory was upon a platform about three feet high trying to start the mud grinder which had become chugged and in some manner the belt that drives this machine was thrown off the pulley, it struck Marshall and threw him from the platform, in falling he was caught by the main driveing belt and in a second was drawn with it and carried through a space about six inches wide between the large drum pulley and the ground crushing him so badly that he died in about four hours. The accident occurred about 4:30 and the victim breathed his last shortly after 8 o'clock. Marshall was aged about 62 years and leaves a wife and two children, a boy and a girl, the latter being about grown. The deceased was one of the oldest and best known citizens of the little village and his death in such a tragic manner has cast a ball of gloom over the place, such as it never had before. The funeral took place this afternoon and was attended by the entire population of the little village and a good portion of the country, showing the esteem in which the dead man was held while in life by the villagers and the people surrounding the place. The tile factory was closed today in order to allow the employees to attend the funeral.

Hi again.
.....I noticed that in your section on James Presley Marshall you don't have much information on his children. Maybe I can help a little, there doesn't seem to be much in the public records in Tipton.
.....You list the persons attending Anna Carpenter Balser Marshall's funeral. M/M Clate Marshall are listed. Clate is the M.C. Marshall listed as child v. his name is Marion Clarence Marshall. According to grave stone and my mother's notes which she may have gotten from the stone (she lived next to the cemetery) he was born 1881 and died 1957. He married Anna Parr, daughter of Christopher Parr and Sophia Huttle sp? don't have a date for the marriage. According to stone and notes Anna was born 1881 and died 1954.
.....They had one son, Marion Clarence Jr. he was born 24 Aug 1922 and died 17 Feb 1992. He was first married to (not sure about this) Helen Armstrong one daughter Trudy Kay born about 1941-1942. Trudy is married to J.C. Stair and lives at 2740 Mountain View Dr, Drasco Arkansas 72530 no phone found in whitepages.com. His second wife was Mary Ellen Wire, no vitals on her but I believe still living in the Mishawaka area.
.....On my next trip to Tipton I plan to check for a marriage date for Clate and Anna.
Fred

He married BESSIE MAY BOZE December 19, 1903 in Adams County, Indiana. She was b. 31 Dec 1885 Adams County, Indiana and d. 13 Jan 1974 Wyoming.

Per Jody Benjamin's posting to Genealogy.com message board on Marshalls, May 15, 2000 (Living individuals omitted here; write me)
.....I remember both John Wilbur and Bessie May -- we visited them whenever we saw my grandmother when I was a child. John Wilbur was a blacksmith who had learned the trade from the Amish that lived in Adams County. (Actually now in Adams County almost all the farms are Amish.) Most of his customers were Amish, and when he retired, he sold his tools to an Amish blacksmith. Eventually, he and Bessie moved to "town", Decatur where they did all sorts of jobs. The last was as janitors to a wooden box making company, I think. They had a nasty cat (at least to kids -- it did like my dad) and a talking parrot and a very orderly house, filled with antimacassars and crocheted doilies which Bessie made hundreds of. Very old fashioned looking. When I knew John Wilbur, he was very large (mostly he sat in a straight-backed chair in the dark living room) and very bald and very friendly, always ready to laugh.
...John Wilbur and Bessie May Boze Marshall had 4 children.
...Their first child was:
...Gladys Lucille Marshall, born Dec 14, 1904 in Berne Indiana and died March 10, 2000 in Berne, Indiana. (She would have thought of herself as a Geneva woman, since that is where she spent most of her adult life, except for several years in Ft. Wayne while married to her 3rd husband and a few in Decatur where she spent a few years until her 4th husband retired. They moved to Geneva in about 1978 or 9 or so, and she lived there until she moved into the Berne nursing home in about 1998.)
Anyway, Gladys was the first woman elected to public office in Adams county, was active and a matron of the Eastern Star chapter in Adams County, and loved to talk and have fun with her friends. She adored both of her children. She also hated her name: "What was my mother thinking of? Why couldn't she have named me Sarah Elizabeth [an adored grandmother on her mother's side]?" I think the others weren't too thrilled with their names, either, because I never knew Aunt Dabber's REAL name, Allabelle, for years.
...Gladys married Alfred Beyer (b.1898, d May 1925) on Sept 29, 1924. They had one child, Betty Eileen Beyer, born July 3, 1925 and died of breast cancer on July 7, 1960. Betty was married several times (or maybe not), but her significant others were: Ralph Clifton, Bill Dormer, Tommy Coroway, and Wayne Ordway. She had one child, Sheryl Kay Cllifton (Fisher)(Parsons). Betty was born after her father died and Gladys, the young widow went to LPN training in Ft. Wayne and Bessie May took in Betty for what was to be most of Betty's growing up years.
...Gladys's second husband was Andrew Clinton Cook (b. Aug 26 1899 in Adams County, and died April 26, 1939). They eloped with another couple in August 1927 to Covington KY and had to keep the marriage a secret for a while because the other couple had some issues with their parents. Gladys's daughter Betty stayed with Bessie (a very young grandmother) because Bessie didn't want to give up the beautiful child (she was a striking adult, too) and because Andrew didn't want the daughter of his former rival (who was the first to win Gladys) to live with them in the country near the school he taught at. Anyway, Gladys and Andrew had one child, Robert Russell Cook, born Dec 22, 1928 in Adams County. Andrew soon went to teach high school in Geneva and they lived next door for a while to the girl Robert would eventually marry. He never dated anyone else. Andrew died, and Gladys took a small apartment in Geneva and Betty finally came to live with her and Robert, for a while at least.
...Gladys married Marcus Stahly (born July 1, 1908 and died of cancer Nov 10, 1959) on April 6, 1941, a church organist in the newspaper business -- the printing part. They moved to Ft. Wayne. Soon after their marriage, he went to war, serving in the South Pacific. His boat was shot out from under the men, and he floated in the seas around the Phillipines for several days until they were rescued. He loved his stepchildren and grandchildren, gently and tenderly.
...Gladys married Thurman I. Drew on June 5, 1965. He was b. Jan 23, 1905 and died August 17, 1980, both in Adams County. Gladys had LOTS of fun with him. They traveled a lot in a trailer and spent many winters in Texas....
Children of JOHN MARSHALL and BESSIE BOZE include:
