Brown, HISTORY OF BUTLER CO. PENNSYLVANIA, 1895, p. 1277:
PHILIP MELVIN, a native of Down county, Ireland, son of James Melvin, was born in 1802, grew to maturity in his native land, and about 1821 immigrated to Allegheny county, Pennsylvania. He learned the cooper's trade in that county, and followed it for some years in Allegheny City. He married Eliza Seth, a daughter of Jacob Seth, of Beaver county, to which union were born the following children: Ann J., wife of James M. Breckenridge; Elizabeth, wife of Frank Davis; David R.; Charlotte, deceased wife of William Lock, and Philip S., of Kansas. In 1886 Mr. Melvin removed to Muddy Creek township, Butler county, and settled upon the farm now in possession of his son David's children. He purchased 200 acres of land, which was patented by James Stewart in 1787. Here he erected a home and devoted the remainder of his life to agricultural pursuits, in connection with his trade, which he followed down to within a few years of his death, in 1882. In early manhood he was a Whig, and afterwards a Republican, and always took a deep interest in political matters. Mr. Melvin was one of the original members of the Methodist Episcopal church of Portersville, and died a member of the society at Prospect.

DAVID R. MELVIN was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, November 14, 1832, and is the eldest son of Philip and Eliza Melvin. He remained with his parents until he learned the wagon-maker's trade, and in 1856 established that business upon his farm in Muddy Creek township, and conducted the same for twenty years. He also engaged in farming. In 1855 he married Susan Roberts, a daughter of William Roberts, of Lawrence county, to which union have been born eight children, six of whom survive, as follows: Emma, wife of Gilmer Sharp; Herman P.; Olive, wife of A. J. Francis; Jennie, wife of Wm. S. Lutz; William W.; and Augustus H. Mr. Melvin is a Republican, and has filled the offices of constable, supervisor and school director. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Prospect.

Children of PHILIP MELVIN and ELIZA SETH are:
.....i.....ANN JANE MELVIN, b. Abt. 1831; m. JAMES M. BRECKENRIDGE.
14.....ii.....DAVID R. MELVIN, b. November 14, 1832, Allegheny City, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
.....iii.....ELIZABETH MELVIN, b. Abt. 1833; m. FRANK DAVID.
.....iv.....CHARLOTTE MELVIN, b. Abt. 1834; m. WILLIAM LOCK. Charlotte was dead by 1895.
15.....v.....PHILIP S. MELVIN, b. Abt. 1837, Pennsylvania, USA.

GENERATION NO. 4

10. ANN MELVIN (JOHN, SAMUEL, ?) was born Abt. 1820 in County Down, Ireland. She married CHRISTOPHER LOVETT. He was born Bet. 1810 - 1813 in Ireland, and died August 22, 1884 in North Vernon, Jennings County, Indiana, USA.

Notes for ANN MELVIN:
Christening: April 23, 1828, Drumcaw, County Down, Ireland (Northern Ireland)

Baptism: January 15, 1845, She was baptized as Catholic, conditionally Sponsors were David Fitzgibbons and Brigit Daviess by Pastor Julian Delaune at St Ann's in Jennings County, IN

Marriage Data: May 23, 1844, Marriage Index gives name as "Anne" and lists baptism date as 5-23-1844

Religion: When married she was a Episcopalian, witnesses : Jacobus Herbert & Honoria McCarty

Notes for CHRISTOPHER LOVETT:
May (Parker) Zimmerer suggests he came from County Cork. He was Catholic. Family legend says his father was the caretaker on the estate of wealthy Presbyterians named Melvin, and Christopher fell in love with Ann, daughter of Agusta Melvin. Marriage being forbidden, they eloped to Enland, where he worked in the shipyards. Later they came to America, with one daughter--Mary, called "Mollie"--being born at sea on 23 March 1845.

There are several big problems with this pretty tale. One is that EARLY LANDOWNERS OF JENNINGS COUNTY, page 57, lists Christopher Lovett as buying land there 4 August 1837! Another is that the Melvins (see the family history on this website) came from County Down, not County Cork, to Pennsylvania, and the father of Ann was John--not Agusta--and he died broke, willing Ann anything he might inherit from his siblings in Pennsylvania!

JENNINGS COUNTY COURT RECORDS for 1818-1850, Probate Order Book 4, page 245, carried Christopher's naturalization. Mary Hariden and William E. Wagner testified in his behalf, and be became a citizen 12 November 1845. In 1880, he was in Cicero Township, Tipton County, Indiana. He died in North Vernon, Jennings County, Indiana, 22 August 1884.

See the LOVETT genealogy on this website for descendants.
