.....Mrs. Peggy Leavell, wife of Rev. John Leavell, who resides near Belton, this County, died at the residence of her husband on last Friday night after a lingering illness of many months. Mrs. Leavell was an aged woman , who, by a pious life, had commanded the respect of all acquaintances; and her husband has the sincere sympathy of the community in this bereavement, which takes from him in old age the partner of his life for near half a century past. The remains of the deceased were interred in the Baptist church-yard at Belton on last Sunday morning , after a very impressive funeral service by the venerable Rev. W. P. Martin.

.....Miss Hannah P. Leavell died near Belton, S.C., on the 30th of July, 1895. She was 71 years of age, and was a member of the Baptist Church for 55 years. She was a daughter of the late Rev. John Leavell. Her remains were laid to rest in the Belton cemetery on the day following her death, Rev. Mike McGee conducting the funeral services.
Notes for William M. Leavell:11.....x.....ELIJAH T. LEAVELLE was born in 1840. He died on 16 Aug 1911 in Seneca, Oconee, South Carolina, USA. Is this the Elijah T. Leavill who surrendered at Appomattox on 9 April 1865? If so, he fought in the 2nd South Carolina Rifles, C.S.A., Company G. At findagrave.com is a photo of his tombstone from Mount Zion Cemetery, Central, Pickens, South Carolina, USA. It's claimed on findagrave that he married Sarah Emily Alexander (30 Jan 1841--30 Aug 1906), presumably late in life, and she's buried there, too, but no tombstone photo for her is posted. She has at least three children with the last name of Hewin.
A William M. Leavell fought in Company L of the SC 1st Infantry Regiment (Orr's Rifles) during the Civil War. The unit was first stationed on Sullivan's Island and called by the other troops "The Pound Cake Regiment" because of its light duty. Then in April, 1862, it moved to Virginia with 1,000 men. Assigned to General Gregg's and McGowan's Brigade, it fought with the army from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor . Later the regiment endured the hardships of the Petersburg trenches and the Appomattox operations. Of the 537 engaged at Gaines' Mill , fifty-nine percent were killed, wounded or missing. The unit reported 116 casualties at Second Manassas and 170 at Fredericksburg , then lost forty-nine percent of the 233 at Chancellorsville and three percent of the 366 at Gettysburg . There were 12 killed and 81 wounded at The Wilderness , 15 killed, 36 wounded, and 44 missing at Spotsylvania , 3 killed and 34 wounded at Deep Bottom , and 9 killed and 37 wounded at Poplar Springs Church . .....It is our painful duty to announce the death of Mr. William M. Leavell, which occurred at his residence near Belton on last Saturday night from inflamation of the liver, of which he had been suffering for a long time. He had been for the past two terms a member of the Board of County Commissioners of Anderson County, and was highly esteemed for his integrity and upright character. The funeral services were conducted in the Baptist Church in Belton on last Monday morning, after which his remains were interred by the Sons of Temperance, of which he was a member. The burial service of this order was very solemn and beautiful.

T. S. Leavell was a private in Co. A, 35th Alabama Regiment. In the year of 1862 or 1863 at Grenada MS had a severe attack of fever, enlargement of the liver and afterwards chils which altogether lasted him about 7 months. He is now 65 years old and partially blind. Unable to make a living on account of sickness and old age. Volunteer. Pension application filed in Lauderdale County 1895/04/29.
