.....I thought I'd send you the entire account of James Levell's death, as told to me by my great uncle Elwood Levell on a visit to his home in English, IN in 1977. He was a classic storyteller and a keeper of the family history. He was the first to tell me that the family was French and that they were Huguenots driven out of France by religious persecution. He also told about the death of James Levell.
.....Elwood was a son of Charles 1862 Levell, my great grandfather. I'm told he was called Charlie. Charlie's first wife was a woman named Sarah Emily Goodson. They were married in 1888, the year my grandfather was born. She died during a flu epidemic in 1893. Charlie then married a woman named Mary Ann Spencer. They had only one child, Nolan. He died at Fort Des Moines during basic training during WWI, ironically, in another flu epidemic. Nolan gave a gold pocket watch to my grandfather when he left for the army, which I still have. In 1898, Charlie married for the third time to a woman named Anna Lucretia Dillman. They had five more children, including Elwood. The following is the story as Elwood told it to me:
....."It seems that James Levell got into an argument with Rella Tandy Levell’s brother, a man named Charles Tandy. What they were arguing about we do not know. As the story goes, during an argument Tandy told James Levell, “If you touch me, I’ll kill you.” In the same moment that James Levell was throwing a punch at Tandy, his son Tom threw a rock, intending to hit Tandy with it. Instead, the rock hit his father, deadening the impact of his punch (or as Elwood put it, “it stunted his lick”). This interrupted the fist fight long enough for Charles Tandy to draw a gun and shoot James Levell. It was a wound that killed him. My great uncle Elwood did not relate the exact time or place of this incident, but believed it was in 1860 and that it probably occurred near his home in Gallatin County, Kentucky.
.....Elwood did not know if there was any kind of inquiry regarding the death of James Levell, but he did offer a couple of poignant epilogues to the story. Elwood’s father (Charles Levell) told him that no mention was ever made of the shooting in the Andrew Anderson Levell household. It seems to have been a very taboo subject, perhaps a source of embarrassment for the family. This aversion to discussing the subject of James Levell’s death may explain why family references to the death are always very vague, i.e. “died in a family feud”. According to Charles Levell, however, after the incident Charles Tandy was forbidden to enter Andrew Levell’s home. Only when Rella Tandy Levell was on her deathbed, and asked to see her brother, did Andrew Levell relent and allow a visit. Charles told Elwood that he was 12 years old when his mother died, so that would place her death about 1874.
.....Elwood remembered seeing his great uncle Tom at a family reunion in English, IN, but did not remember the exact year. Tom came home with them afterward and spent the night. Later that fall, according to Elwood, he died and was buried in Vincennes, IN. Thomas Levell last appears in census records in 1910 living in Vincennes, IN, so Elwood’s recollection about this visit were probably accurate. One can only imagine the burden that Thomas Levell carried all his life, knowing that he had been instrumental in his father’s death."
.....I hope to get to Gallatin County someday to see if I can find any information that would confirm this story, or any of the rest of our family history. Several family tree submissions indicate that two sons of James and Agnes Levell, John and Robert, are buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Warsaw. Maybe their father was buried there too. I'd like to visit that churchyard.
.....Anyway, I hope you enjoy this story. I agree that it helps bring the family history to life a little bit. Let me know if you have questions. Let's stay in touch.
Regards,
Doug

8. MARY E. CARR (LOUISA LEVELL, JAMES) was born October 17, 1855, and died 1911. She married JOHN W. BATMAN September 23, 1879 in Crawford County, Indiana. He was born September 01, 1855.

Notes for MARY E. CARR:

John W. Batman
...JOHN W. BATMAN, one of the early settlers of Pawnee County in River Township, has had a number of experiences that are not only of interest as part of his individual record but serve to illustrate the conditions under which the pioneers lived and the battles they fought in gaining homes and prosperity on this western frontier.
..It was in November, 1879, that he came to the West, a young married man, and drove overland all the distance from Crawford County, Indiana. Near Pilot Knob in that county he was born September 1, 1855. His grandfather, Henry Batman, served as a soldier in the War of 1812 and participated in that early campaign against the Indians under General Harrison which culminated in the battle of Tippecanoe, in which this Kentucky volunter[sic] lost an arm. It is believed that Henry Batman was a native of Virginia. Among his children were John, Jackson, James, Hiram, Cynthia, wife of Michael Dillman, and Rebecca, wife of James Hubbard.
...John W. Batman was only an infant when his father, John Batman, died. John Batman was born near Lexington, Kentucky, and spent his brief career as a farmer. He died just before the outbreak of the Civil war. His wife's maiden name was Eliza McCartney. Her father, Duke McCartney, was a native of Virginia. John Batman and wife had the following children: Lafayette, a farmer of Ringwood, Oklahoma; Marian, living near Holden, Missouri; John W.; Charles A., of Belpre, Kansas; and Ellen, wife of Charles Bowman, of Belpre, Kansas.
...Mrs. John Batman several years after the death of her first husband married Thomas Ryan, and after his death she married Thomas Myler. She had no children by either of these husbands. Her death occurred near Seward in Stafford County, Kansas, in 1891, when she was seventy-one years old. She had exchanged her Indiana farm for lands near Pawnee Rock and had come to Kansas with her son John W. Subsequently she moved to the vicinity of Seward and spent her last years there on a farm.
...John W. Batman had a bringing up on the farm, acquired his education in the district schools and a brief time at a select school, and lived in the homes of his two step-fathers. When he came to Kansas he brought two teams, a few household goods and a small amount of money. He soon located on the quarter section where he still lives in River Township. It was his intention and his first practice was directed along that line to make a farm. When the drought came he was forced by a succession of dry years to seek labor elsewhere. He then moved to Pawnee Rock and went to work as a section hand. His boss was a noted pioneer of that vicinity, Michael Sweeny. His work on the railway section continued only for a few months at a time, while during the open season he was busy with his farm. While working on the railroad he helped to lay the steel on the Santa Fe line from Dundee to Garfield.
...Since 1882 Mr. Batman has been steadily getting the better of circumstances in his gallant fight for prosperity as a farmer. With all the hard times he has passed through there was never a day when there was not a square meal in the house for his family, although some anxiety was inevitable on his part as to how he could manage to keep up that satisfactory condition. He had a long and hard struggle before he could lift the mortgage from his farm, though it was paid off during some of the hard years. Several years later he started to buy more land, an eighty acre tract which cost him $500. This debt was soon paid. In 1901 he bought a quarter of section 7, at a price of $1,700 and had this paid for by 1903.
...Mr. Batman's pioneer home in Kansas was a box house 12 by 16 feet. It was the humble abode in which his daughter was born. He later bought the old school house and added it to the shanty and with these more commodious quarters the family was content until 1901, when he erected his present nine room house, a large part of which is modern. His pioneer barn was a straw stable, so familiar in pioneer days, and his present barn is 36 by 46 feet with room for forty-five tons of hay. Mr. Batman has practiced diversified principles of farming, has kept cattle and milk cows, and the milk has often sufficed to supply the family groceries. The best yield of wheat he ever had was thirty bushels to the acre in 1914. A number of years ago he sold some wheat as low as 26 cents a bushel. In his individual experience his record high price was $1.86. He is a stockholder in the Farmers Elevator at Pawnee Rock, and also owns stock in the Farmers State Bank at. Larned.
...Several times he has filled township offices, having been three times trustee, a number of years clerk and also a member of the school board of district No. 9. Politically his affiliations have been steadily democratic. While not a church member, his purse has been open according to its possibilities for church and benevolent purposes. The only order to which he has attached himself is the Patrons of Husbandry or the Grange.
...For over thirty years Mr. Batman enjoyed a happy home life with his good wife. He was married September 23, 1879, only a few weeks before he came out to Kansas, to Miss Mary E. Carr, daughter of William and Eliza (Levell) Carr. Her father was a Kentuckian and on coming to Indiana followed the business of milling and lumbering in Scott and Crawford counties. His home was near English in Crawford County and he was quite a factor in local affairs. His children were: James; Mrs. Batman, who was born October 17, 1855; Annie, wife of B. Y. Davis; Edwin and Elwin, twins; and Tilden H. Mrs. Batman, who died in 1911, was a member of the Christian Church. She had been educated, like her husband, in the common schools. Of the children born to them only two grew up, Will A. and Edna M., both of whom are with their father at the old homestead.

She was born July 27, 1865 in English, Crawford, Indiana, and died January 14, 1941 in Princeton, Gibson, Indiana, USA.

Notes for EDMUND PIERCE CARR:
Edmund had long narrow feet that always hurt because his shoes were too short. He could walk 25 miles without tiring. Edmund worked at his father's mill. She dreamed that she saw him coming home holding his hand, because he had lost his fingers. A few days later he came walking home holding his hand, and he had lost all his fingers except his thumb. He was 23 or 24 and already had some kids by then.

He was born on 11 Nov 1896 in Oakland City, Gibson, Indiana, USA. He died on 30 Dec 1958 in Brownsville, Edmonson, Kentucky, USA.

Notes for LOUISA LUCINDA CARR:
…..Lulu was the fifth of 8 children. The first two boys, Clyde and Jesse were 3 and 5 when typhoid took them in an epidemic. Harry Edmond was the third son, and he died in the 40s of tuberculosis. (Changed middle name to Edward; Died 6/23/1950)
…..From English the Carrs moved to Moweaqua in a covered wagon. Lulu was 8 or so at the time. From Moweaqua they moved to West Salem in the covered wagon, and then back to English. At this time her father became the Marshal of English, Indiana. At one time, when she was about 12, the family moved to Knox County, again by covered wagon. They were all excited because gypsies were nearby and the townspeople also feared that they might be gypsies. In Knox County they lived in the cyprus swamp around Decker.
…..Her first job was a typesetter at a newspaper in English. Her pay was $1.50 per week. She then went to Indianapolis to work at the "bughouse" which was the insane asylum called Central something. She was 16, and that is where she met her husband to be, Claude. She quit her job and began working at Hooks Drug Store in Indianapolis. She was married Aug 15, 1917, at age 17. Lu died of lymphoma. .....i.....WAYNE ELLSWORTH LEVELLE

Published in Rockford Register Star from July 3 to July 4, 2013
ELLSWORTH--WAYNE LEVELLE JR., 73 MILTON, Wis. - Ellsworth Wayne LeVelle Jr. 73, of Milton, WI died June 26, 2013, after an amazingly courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma, with his family by his side. He was born on February 3, 1940, in Long Point, IL, son of Ellsworth Wayne Sr. and Agatha LeVelle. Wayne was a 1958 graduate of Janesville High School and worked as a carpenter all of his life. First with his father in Janesville as part of LeVelle & Son Construction, and later at Ingersoll Milling Machine Company in Rockford, IL. Wayne was a U.S. Army Veteran. Wayne was an avid bowler; some would argue one of the best in the area. In his younger days in Janesville, he bowled in as many as 11 leagues a week!! Even after his illness made it impossible to come back to bowling, you could still find him at a bowling center watching his friends bowl, running brackets and just enjoying the game he loved so much. Wayne was inducted into both the Beloit and Janesville Bowling Hall of Fame's in 1992 and has served on the Beloit Men's Bowling Association and Bowling Council for decades. In 1976, the team he bowled the National tournament with took 2nd place. After bowling season would end, Wayne would hit the water in the summer time doing the other thing he loved, fishing. His family and friends share many wonderful memories of Wayne on the many fishing trips they took together. One word describes Wayne's favorite fishing spot: Hayward!! Wayne was a die-hard Green Bay Packer and Chicago Cub fan. Most of the time he never changed his TV channel from ESPN or ESPN2!! If the Packers or Cubs weren't playing, as long as he was watching a sporting event he was happy!
... Wayne is survived by his daughter, Michelle LeVelle of Milton, WI; two stepchildren, Ben and Courtney Thompson of Loves Park, IL; his sister, Karen (Richard) Hamlett of Janesville WI; nieces, Kim (Mark ) Sommerfeldt and Kelly (Brett) Lipetri; great- nieces and nephews, Josh, Jessica, Storm and Travis; and many great friends including his best friend of 37 years, Robert Ciarpaglini.
