5.6 miles southwest of Culpeper, on the south side of Route 29, the cemetery had a wire fence around it and one stone in it, bearing the names of Annie and Booten B. Leavell, and her birth and death dates. Under Booten's name was the date "Aug. 26, 1859," and a worker mistakenly listed the "graveyard" as having an oldest grave of 1859, when that was clearly Booten's birthdate. Booten was listed as owner of the graveyard.

…..She lived most of her life in Weyers Cave and was a member of Weyers Cave United Methodist Church. She was the oldest member of the church at the time of her death and the last living member of her immediate family. She taught Sunday school for several years.

LEAVEL, Edith Lynn Jones died January 11th in Beaufort, South Carolina at 87 years, following a lengthy illness. A graveside service will held be at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, Jan 14 at Greenwood Cemetery, 945 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, Alabama. Wife of the Late Dr. Boude Bowman Leavel of Montgomery, Alabama she is survived by two daughters, Dr. Carole Leavel Bassett of Keedysville, Maryland, and Cynthia Roddenberry-Leavel of Beaufort, SC, and by one grandchild, Elizabeth Dianne Bassett of Ashburn, VA. Edith was born in Birmingham, Alabama, the only daughter of Zera Alberta Jones and Walter Linwood Jones. She was the eldest of four children and survived the deaths of her brothers, Walter Linwood, Jr., Jack Burton and Morgan Howard Jones. Edith graduated from Plains High School in Plains, GA in 1940. She graduated with an R.N degree in 1944 from Crawford W. Long Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, GA. She married Dr. B.B. Leavel in 1945 and was appointed head of one of North America's first Post Anesthesia Recovery Units at Crawford Long Hospital. She and Dr. Leavel settled in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955. She served as President of the Montgomery Medical Auxiliary and was active in Evangel Temple Assembly of God Church. Well done, thou good and faithful servant.

Meets Death In Luray
.....John G. Evans, a native of Lynchburg, who has been living in Luray ten or twelve years, most of the time conducting the restaurant business near the passenger station, was almost instantly killed on the Norfolk and Western Railway tracks not more than fifty feet from his place of business last Saturday evening about six o’clock, while attempting to cross the railroad in front of freight train No. 88, northbound. He had just left his restaurant and was going westward over the tracks when the train struck him, knocking him from the track breaking his ribs, inflicting a fractured skull, badly mashing the left side of his face and perhaps internally injuring him. His injuries were of such a nature that he lived only about twenty minutes. Hubert Purdham, a section man, who was watching the crossing at the time, tried to pull Mr. Evans off of the track when he saw the danger the latter was in, and in his efforts sustained severe injuries and was confined to his bed for several days as a result of his experience. A coroner’s jury was empaneled [sic] soon after the accident, the verdict being that no one was to blame for the killing. On various occasions Mr. Evans had been rescued from near death at the same place by Watchmen D. D. Armstrong. The hourly passing of trains had apparently rendered him careless of the danger of attempting to cross the track in front of passing trains. He had often been seen in apparent abstraction standing on the railroad tracks oblivious of the danger attending his action. The restaurant business conducted by Mr. Evans had been a profitable one. The body was shipped to Lynchburg for burial on Monday morning. He was about 70 years of age and unusually active and well preserved for his age.
.....“Hot Tom” as he was familiarly known to almost everybody in Luray, filled a unique place in the life of this town, was loyal to his friends, a boon companion and convivial spirit. His apparent weakness was in a measure overlooked when his genial jovial spirit entered into a cursory estimate of the man. A character who apparently took delight in his business during most of the time he has been conducting the same in Luray, he nevertheless at times gave little heed to the things that made for business as modernly guarded and watched.

...I saw your site listed when I did a search for Beauregard Level, my great grandfather. My parents were Page Randall Level and Mildred Rosser Level, who were both born and raised in the vicinity of Luray, VA. I have worked on the family tree off and on for several years and one of the stumbling blocks has always been Beauregard who is also referred to as Franklin Beauregard and Beauregard Franklin. His marriage certificate in Page Co. lists his parents as Alex Level and Mary Level of Culpeper, VA.
...I also have found the other Levels in Page County including James Level and his wife who had several children including a Wm. B. F. Level who was born around 1857. For several reasons, I've often wondered if Wm. B. F. is the same as Beauregard who was born in 1859. First, the ancestors of James can be traced to Leavels in Culpeper county in the 18th century, two of whom were named Benjamin Franklin Leavel. Second, Beauregard would have been an unusual given name in 1859 but following First Manassas in 1861, it might have been a more common name for a child in the Confederacy and might even have been given to a young boy as a nickname. My hypothesis has been that James and his wife were not that popular as parents. Their children seemed to move away as quickly as possible and the parents spent all of the post war years alone until their deaths. It is possible young Wm. B. F. went to live with relatives in Culpepper for a variety of reasons and there became Beauregard F. or F. Beauregard who later returned to Page County and married Martha Skelton. I know it's a stretch and that's why I'm particularly interested in Alexander and Mary's details if you have them.
...I would appreciate any info you can share and will gladly provide the details on what I know of the Page County Levels. I am presently at a course in St Louis for two weeks and won't be able to get at my notes until the 18th of May.
...As a note, my father's mother was Ruth Level (Jenkins) who had four children--Edward, Robert, Martha and Page. Aunt Marty is still alive and I hope to put together the best evidence and see if she can fill in any details. Ruth was married to a Jenkins but divorced him and the father(s) of Robert, Martha and Page is not recorded anywhere. I did talk to my father about it prior to his death and he identified his father as a Tom Evans and gave enough details that I have a place to start looking but unfortunately Evans is fairly common. As young boys,my father and my Uncle Robert took their mother's maiden name of Level so that's how I am a Level.

.....I have made some progress. My father, Page Randall Level, told me that his father was Tom Evans, aka Hot Tom Evans. I checked the census for Luray in 1920 when my father was born and found no Thomas Evans, but did find a John G. Evans. I relayed that information to my father and he said that all he'd heard was Hot Tom Evans and that he ran a hot dog stand near the train station. The census reveals that John G. was the proprietor of a restaurant on Cave Street, which runs along beside the train station in Luray. I spent several years looking for a Thomas Evans, thinking that John G. may have had a son or other relative who worked with him in the restaurant. Then several years ago, I was looking at a collection of obituaries for Page County, Virginia, and came across one from 1938 for a Knight who had lived and worked in Page County. The obituary stated that he had worked concession stands and such around the county for years and had learned his trade from John "Hot Tom" Evans. Well, this connected the John G from the census with the Hot Tom my father recollected. In March 2010 I went back to Luray for a couple of weeks and conducted more research, especially into John G. Evans. I found him mentioned in the Page News and Courier several times with the final reference being in the November 26, 120 edition of the paper with the publication of his obituary. He died from injuries suffered after being struck by a train passing his place of business. My father was born on December 28, 1920, and died September 22, 1998. By the time, I was able to piece this much of the story together, my Aunt Marty (Martha) had died, so there has been no one to fill in any details.
.....My grandmother Level was born Ruth Cleveland Level, the daughter of Benjamin Franklin (Beauregard) Level and Martha Skelton Level. The parents reported in the obituary for my father are not correct, but this is probably because my mother always told us children that my father's parents were John Level and Ruth Skelton. The subject was not one we were permitted to pursue, but you can see how she was trying to preserve the rationale for the Level name and incorporated Ruth's mother's maiden name as Ruth's. Ruth had four children: Edward Jenkins with her husband, Melvin Jenkins; Robert Leon Level; Page Randall Level by John G. Evans; and Martha Jenkins. All of the children were known as Jenkins initially, but a story I heard from my mother in her later years was that Robert and Page had called a man Daddy and that he had cursed and said to them that they were not his sons. I am assuming that this man was Melvin Jenkins. Following that, Robert and Page took their mother's maiden name of Level as their last name. I suspect that Robert was also John G's son. Martha was born in 1923 and could not have been fathered by John G.
.....It's all rather messy isn't it. I did go to Lynchburg, Virginia, where John G's body had been shipped for burial and found his grave. I also checked in at the library which has a great genealogy collection and found an obituary for John G. It was a reprint of the one from the Page News and Courier. I also found a marriage certificate for John G. to a St. John. This listed his birthplace as Mecklenburg County, Virginia, and gave his parents' names.
.....My conclusion, so far, is that my father was indeed a Level, just not the usual way of obtaining the name from one's father. But from Ruth, he was the grandson of Beauregard which links him to the Levels of Madison and Culpeper. My Level Tree at Ancestry sets forth what I think our line is and I plan on providing a narrative for it and providing it to my brother and an uncle on the Rosser side sometime in September. If it would be helpful, I would be glad to send you a copy.

.....Olen F. Levell, Jr. passed away Feb. 26, 2016, at the Bailey Center. He was born July 3, 1916, in Staunton, Va. His family moved to Roanoke, Va., where he graduated with a two-year degree from Roanoke Business College.
.....He enlisted in the Army Air Corp and trained as a B-24 pilot. He was assigned to the 8th Air Force, 392nd Bomb group where he flew 29 missions in World War II, two of which were on D-Day. He enlisted in the Air Force Reserves after the war and stayed until 1957.
.....In 1937, Olen began working for Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. in Roanoke. In 1956, he moved his family to Mt. Lebanon, a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pa., for a sales manager position at PPG. He retired in 1978 and he and his wife Martha moved to Indian Lake, Pa., where they enjoyed golf and made many good friends.
.....In 1991, they moved to St. Augustine to be near family. Olen began volunteering throughout the county. He started at Flagler Hospital in 1994 and had 17,500 volunteer hours. He was an active member of Memorial Presbyterian Church.
.....Olen was a wonderful father and role model. He touched many lives through his service to country, family, community and church.
.....Olen is preceded by his wife, Martha, after 65 years of marriage. He is survived by his son Olen F. They moved to Raleigh around 1950 where they lived for 65 years at 504 Yarmouth Rd. Ruby was passionate about her flowers and birds. She was active in the Woman's Club of Raleigh, The Pedal Pushers Garden Club (where she was a founding member) and her Bridge club.

.....Floyd William Leavell Jr., 84, of Fairmont, West Virginia, passed away July 9, 2005, at the Louis A. Johnson Medical Center Hospice in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Floyd was born in Culpeper County to Floyd William Leavell Sr. and Mary Ann Barfield Leavell January 27, 1921 and was married to Elvira Ann West Leavell for 63 years (1942). Three months later he was drafted into the Army and served in the Pacific Theatre and Alaska; received the Bronze Star, Philippine Liberation Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal. Upon returning from WWII, he and Elvira lived in Wheaton, Maryland where they raised their five children. Floyd was a well liked and successful auto mechanic in the Silver Spring, Wheaton area for forty years. Floyd started his career with Hopkins and Willis Chevrolet in Culpeper. sisters, Elizabeth West of Richmond and Frances Davis of Palmyra; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great, great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Richard Leavell, Jackson “Buck” Leavell, James Leavell and Raymond Leavell and sister, Mary Louise West.

Interment will be in the Culpeper National Cemetery New Section, 501 Chandler Street, with military honors provided by V.F.W. Post 2524 and American Legion Post 330 Honor Guard. .....Raymond Edward Leavell, 79, of Culpeper died Wednesday, May 4, 2005 at Evergreen Nursing Home in Winchester. He was born Dec. 30, 1925 in Culpeper County to the late Floyd and Mary Barfield Leavell.
.....Mr. Leavell was a veteran of the United States Army, serving three years as a driver stationed in Germany with the 39th Field Artillery Division. He was also a member of the Culpeper V.F.W. Mr. Leavell loved farming and the outdoors. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
.....Mr. Leavell is survived by his wife, Frances Elizabeth Jones Leavell of Culpeper, and five children, Stuart Leavell and his wife, Dorothy of Remington, Shirley Settle and her husband, Kenneth of Rixeyville, Sammy Leavell and his wife, Joyce of Culpeper, Steve Leavell and Debbie
of Culpeper, and Sheila Leavell of Culpeper.

.....Frances Elizabeth Leavell, age 78, of Culpeper died Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at Culpeper Health and Rehabilitation Center.
.....She was born November 6, 1931 in Culpeper to the late Luther and Neda Pearl Dodson Jones.
.....Mrs. Leavell enjoyed needlepoint, gardening, spending time outdoors and visiting friends.
