DESCENDANTS OF HENRY LINES

by Jane A. Leavell

Generation No. 1

See John T. Lines under #48 below--a Civil War vet, he says the family descended from Michael Lines, an Irishman, and tells interesting bits about their travels.

1. HENRY LINES was born abt 1746 in Pennsylvania, and died Abt. 1796 in South Carolina. He married ELIZABETH GROFF

A family tree at MyHeritage.com says he was buried in Milroy, Rush County, Indiana, but this seems very unlikely. Wife is per http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/25466475/person/1744606902?ssrc=, Sherron Family Tree at http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/20438271/person/1010545057?ssrc= says his father was John Lines/Lyons born 31 AUG 1731 England, died 30 JAN 1775 and married JANE HARMAN. However, they also give him a brother, Henry Lyons, born 1753 and died 1772, which just isn't possible--two brothers named Henry, both alive at the same time? Further, it makes his father 15 when he was born.

Children of HENRY LINES are:
.....i......REUBEN LINES, b. Brookville, Franklin, Indiana, USA; d. February 11, 1842.

There is no proof as yet, but I received this interesting email from Duane Swanson (dulin3471 at yahoo.com) on 12/16/2013:
I think it is possible that the .....i......REUBEN LINES, b. Brookville, Franklin, Indiana, USA; d. February 11, 1842. could have married a Sarah,

5. HENRY LINES (HENRY) was born Abt. 1773, and died August 14, 1837. He met MARGARET HACKLEMAN in South Carolina, daughter of JOHAN HACKLEMAN and MARY OSBORN. She was born November 17, 1781 in King's Mountain, Lincoln, North Carolina, and died February 11, 1842 in Rush County, Indiana.

Notes for HENRY LINES:
1807 Henry moved to White Water, Indiana. 1821 he moved to Rush County, Indiana. Early January of 1836, Henry Lines (b. 1773), reportedly drunk, went on horseback to Brookville, Indiana, but his horse was frightened as he left the mill at the crossing at Old Sommersell and threw him. Henry drowned. Will mentions Abner, Charity, Conrad, Edward, Elizabeth, Fanny, Michael, Thomas, Sarah, Riller, and Polly lines. (7201906 97 and 81)

The Probate record for Henry Lines in Rush Co. covers 5 years. It includes the remarriage of the widow, Margaret (Hackleman) Lines, the list of Lines children and their married names, and Daniel Kyger's guardianship for Lines granddaughter. The inventory and sale of the household goods, the many IOUs used for payment when banks were not available. A great picture of the time frame in Rush Co., IN.

One of Abner's "sons" turns up in a census living with Corydon Morrison in 1880, listed as his nephew, which ties in with the Morrison marriage. What gives? On 17 May 1866 in Grant County, Indiana, an ABNER LINES married SARAH A. ALLEN

7. AARON LINES (HENRY) was born May 1786 in North Carolina, and died January 18, 1865 in Rush County, Indiana. He married (1) SARAH NOBLE. He married (2) REBECCA ?. She was born Abt. 1805 in Kentucky.

Notes for AARON LINES:
Aaron Lines, born May 1786, is said to have married Sarah, a sister of Jehu Perkins, and settled in Noble Township, Rush County, Indiana. (Jehu did have a daughter Sarah, born 1812, but she married Newton Ward in 1830. I mention this because Jehu and his father Augustus were both known as "Boss" Perkins, which could have caused this confusion.) Augustus Perkins, father of Jehu, married Martha Lines, and did have a sister named Sarah born 1776, but I don't have a record of a daughter named Sarah (or even Rebecca) who might be Aaron Lines' wife.

Several family trees list him as marrying REBECCA JANE BLAIR on 17 December 1823 in Franklin County, Indiana. The Graham Booth Shoukair Forner Wagoner McCormick Drennan tree at http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/3371695/person/-570630286 says she was born 1786 KY, died 1843 in Noble, Rush County, Indiana. But that would make her the mother of Aaron Noble Lines; why would she name a son after another of Aaron's wives? The Lisk/Shields Family Tree at http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/17348373/person/640351582 claims Aaron married Rebecca Jane Blair on 17 Dec 1823 in Franklin County, Indiana, but cites no source. On the other hand, nobody has any dates for SARAH NOBLE.

He must have married several times, because Aaron of Rush Co. IN married Rebecca Watkins 9 July 1843 Fayette Co. IN (Book E, p. 52), and a Rebecca, wife of Aaron Lines, was buried in Homer on 12 May 1864. She appears in the 1850 Rush Co. census with him and presumed son Hamilton.

22. ELIZABETH LINES (HENRY, HENRY) was born 1805. She married ABRAHAM HACKLEMAN February 08, 1824 in Rush County, Indiana, son of ABRAHAM HACKLEMAN and MARGARET TYNER. He was born October 16, 1802 in Georgetown, Scott, Kentucky, and died October 30, 1846 in Mount Pleasant, Des Moines, Iowa, USA.

Notes for ABRAHAM HACKLEMAN:
He was a hunter who also served terms in the legislature. In April, 1836 settled near Burlington on Flint Creek, Illinois. October 17, 1836 sold 60 acres Rush Co. IN and moved to Cass Co. Illinois. 1845 conducted 4-wagon emigrant company from Illinois to Oregon. He started town of Pleasant Grove, Iowa. Died of fever October 30, 1846.

Abner a M.D. was captain of a wagon train to Oregon in 1845. He returned home to bring his family back to Oregon in 1846 (spring) but died. His wife Elizabeth was sister to John H Lines, a relative by marriege, and was an inducement for John to bring his family to Oregon. This was by way of Pannama, San Francisco (Steamship Tennessee- which wrecked on this trip outside the Golden Gate 1853)and then on to Oregon on another ship

the Shinar Cumberland Presbyterian Church cemetery book (Pleasant Grove, Des Moines County, Iowa) and Abner is buried there...died 30 Oct 1846 aged 43 years 11 months and 14 days. Abner was the first cousin of Sarah Lines Portlock and her brother-in-law.

Per http://www.cityofalbany.org/pages/planning/historic/hackleman_district.html
.....The Hackleman District contains 228 properties within about 28 city blocks. The District is named after Abner Hackleman, a farmer from Iowa, who in 1845 immigrated to Oregon by crossing the plains with ox teams. Hacleman settled in the area that became the Hackleman Historic District. During the winter of 1845 Abner Hackleman took up the donation land claim, which is known as Hackleman's Addition in Albany. Hackleman laid off 70 acres of land for the first addition, and this was followed with three more additions now totaling over 100 acres.
.....Other immigrants began arriving and Mr. Hackleman hired Hiram N. Smead to hold another claim for him until his son arrived from Iowa. Only a year after arriving in Oregon, Abner died while returning to Iowa to fetch his family.
.....In 1847, Abner's son Abram relocated his father's claim and built a log house in an oak grove still known as Hackleman's Grove. He later built the house that still stands at the corner of Fifth and Jackson.

Per http://www.linnhistorical.com/earlysettlers.html
In 1845, Abner Hackleman was the captain of about 50 wagons with about 300 people that crossed the plains and brought many of the early settlers of present Linn and Benton Counties. Hackleman arrived locally in early 1846. Abner’s grandson, Thurston Hackleman, made the following diary entry for February 26, 1905, "I met Mr. Firm [William Firman] Hendricson today. He was with my Grandfather Hackleman when they came to the place where Albany now is. It was in February 1846. Grandfather Hackleman taught school that winter at Mr. [Jesse] Looney’s between here and Salem. When they came up here, there were no white people West of the Santiam. He says that those in the company, on that trip, were Abner Hackleman; Firm Hendricson; W[illia]m Hawk; [Jacob or Peter] Rynearson; Wm Gore; and Wm Earl. They were looking for land. They concluded to take the place where we now live and also a townsite . . ."

http://www.oregonpioneers.com/1845.htm has:
.....Captain Abner Hackleman [note: sometimes confused with son Abram/Abraham Hackleman who came in 1847 *6] with approximately 52 wagons, 214 persons and 666 head of cattle and a few horses. This company organized under the name "New London Emigrating Company".
.....The companies leaving from Independence traveled to about three miles from the Kansas near the bank of the Big Soldier creek, where, by prearrangement, the "main company" was to organize, and elect officers. It was estimated that there were approximately 233 wagons, 421 males, 138 females, 448 children [totaling 1007 persons], 3,261 cattle, and 182 horses. On May 15th, Dr. Presley Webb was elected Captain and Stephen H.L. Meek was retained as pilot for $2.50 per wagon. On May 19th a reorganization took place and the company was divided into three divisions. Each division would take a turn traveling in advance for a week at a time. Captain Presley was to accompany whichever train was in the lead; but each division was to choose its own officers.

http://www.myfamilyjones.com/linncounty/Schools/history_of_linn_county_schools.htm
The second school in Linn County was probably a “Dame school”, carried on by Mrs. Abram Hackleman in her own home for her own children and others of the region. It is said that she taught them as she sat in the kitchen picking her geese.

The city of Albany had its beginning when Abner Hackleman and Hiram Smead squatted there in 1845. When Abner Hackleman died in Iowa on his return there from Oregon to fetch his family, his son Abram crossed the plains to look after his father's land. Abram (Abraham) Hackleman was born in Rushville, Indiana, July 29, 1829, his mother being Elizabeth (Lines) Hackleman. He was but 18 when, in the company of his friend, John Burkhart, he left the East in April 1847, with only one yoke of oxen. He came over the Barlow Road and arrived on the site of Albany in September, 1847, where he built a leg house. In the spring of 1848 he went to the California mines, returning in the fall. He repeated the trip in 1849, but when he came back in the fall of 1849 he was ill. He now engaged in farming. In 1850 he laid off 70 acres of his land in East Albany, known as Hackleman's 1st Addition, and followed this by three more additions, in all over 100 acres. By the turn of the century he owned two farms in Linn County and some 3,000 acres in Crook County. He married Elenore Davis in Linn County - she having crossed the plains in 1847 with her father Truit Davis of Missouri who took a land claim 4 miles out of Albany. The couple had five children. Abram Hackleman helped build the Military Road from Albany across the Cascades. He was also interested in the Oregon-Pacific Railroad(19). He died in Albany November 23, 1904, aged 75 (57). ...............

Mr. T.O. Lines
Neosha, Kansas
Dear Sir:
.....I John T. Lines have read your letter to Mr. Jay Brite. It gives me pleasure to be able to state you some family facts, which might interest you. So you already know that I am/one of the three sons of Washington Lines. Having had two brothers, L.R. Lines now of Springfield, Golden who died years ago, who lay by his wife at Cheatem five miles west of Neodesha, Kansas.

.....My grandfather, John Lines married Katy Sailors in 1802 (she came of a large family) to this union were born 13 children, four died in infantcy, nine lived to raise families have visited them all. Their names are as follows: Ruben Lines, Thomas, Seaberry, Alfred, Fannie, Mahala, Jane, Washington, and Ben.
.....Grandma Lines lived with us four years before her death, and gave me the following information. Thomas Lines your great grandfather raised three children Ebendezer, Lige, and Nancy. Your great grandfather and family then moved to Henry County, Indiana. I never saw them since this was in 1856.
.....My father Washington Lines died at the age of 33 years in 1853. He was a Baptist preacher as was Thomas your great grandfather. Thomas was a powerful man physically and a forceful speaker, he spoke in legislature, had his right arm shot off July 4, 1836.

.....In 1780 Mickel Lines came from Ireland he had four sons. I never saw any of them. But Grandma told me they settled in North Carolina my grandfather being overseer of a plantation, their crops consisted of indego, tobacco, sweet-potatoes, and peanuts. All used tobacco, including the women.
.....There had grown to be 25 families, Lines, Salors, Peas, Perkins, Tiner, Poston. All of which migrated to Licking River Kentucky, a distance of 400 miles on foot, not a wagon among them they carried some provision with them, but lived mainly on game, bears, deer, etc., as all were hunters and fishermen. As there was no means of getting any food along the route of their travel. All settled on Licking River my father was born there. Later moving to Rush County, Indiana, others moved to Wabash County, Indiana, still others staying at Licking River.
.....Then came the Civil War, 10 lines went to war, five returned. I was among them.
.....I married Emeline Pearson, October 8, 1867, in Lafountain, Indiana.
.....In 1870 my wife and I, mother and brothers moved to Wilson County, Kansas, we lived in western Kansas for 15 years. After 15 years of residence in Kansas we founded the town of Lafountain, 8 miles west of Neodesha, laid out the town and got the post-office, named the town after (LaFountain, Indiana) this was in Garfields administration.
.....In 1894 my wife and myself, mother and brother came to Springfield, Mo.
.....Well I hope this is clear to you. I am now 81 years of age, my eyesight is very poor I can't read or write any more my hearing is bad, but memory very good as is my general health, also my good wifes health is good, and we enjoy a good old age.
.....I will be glad to hear from you again, and will try to be prompt in answering, and glad to give you any information.
.....Hoping this finds you and yours in good health, and happiness.

I remain,
John T. Lines

P.S. We wish you a merry Christmas. I am a life long Republican a pensioner, a member of Christian Church 1865 an elder for 30 years but not a preacher. Come and see us if possible. My wife is a member of Christian Church also since she was 12 years of age and is 78 now.

Dear Sir:
.....Not having any reply to my letter of December 22, I would like to correct a mistake I made in telling you about the colony of families that immigrated from North Carolina to Licking River, Kentucky, they were all on foot, but each had from one to three pack horse, and carried what provisions they could.
.....In 1870 my brother L.E. Lines, and myself went from Humbolt, Kansas to Fredonia, Kansas, I went to a house on our way of travel for some milk, this happened to be your fathers house, had not heard from them since he left Henry County, Indiana, also saw you mother at the time, but never saw them since, brother L. E. saw them often.
Hoping to receive an early reply,
I remain, John T. Lines

Dear Jean Leavell,
Thank you so much for your message board response. I would love to get any information about the Sailors and Lines ancestries. John E. was my great-grandfather, about whom my family knew nothing until I started digging, but only recently got as far as his father and mother in the 1850 census. John died in 1902 in Converse IN, apparently in unhappy circumstances, and his daughter Iva, my grandmother, died in 1904 at a young age, my mother was only about 7. John's son Ova, was a bricklayer like his grandfather, William. Thanks in advance for anything you can tell me.

Engraved on tombstone: "James (S.)? son of W. & M. Portlock d. ________ 11, 1884 aged 25 y 4 m 22 days." This must be the same as Henry as the age fits the baby shown in the 1860 census and Henry in 1870. Maybe his full name was Henry James, and he used James when he was grown.

Have not yet found a death record for Jimmie L., Sr. and have not been able to find Mrs. Doris Portlock. Jimmie L., Sr. could possibly be our Jim because he could have easily been born in Colorado before Warren and Sophronia left there and would have been in Calif. to be married in Calif. as that's where the rest of the family was. Per Roberta Ancil on 3/8/2013:
.....John S Lines is the older brother of my great-great grandfather, Pleasant Lines. John's wife Nancy out lived him by several years. She lost her husband and at least 3 children about 1880 to an epidemic. Their first child only lived 2 years, the 2nd either stillborn of died shortly after birth, One son lived from 1880-1886 and the daughter into her teens.
.....The family always refered to her as "Aunt Nance" and always said she was crazy as a bedbug. (Slept with a knife under the pillow and an axe under the bed.) John and Nancy lived in the house that I grew up in. It was a log house. It has since been torn down. At one time John's sister Frances Carter and her family also lived in the house. Their son Orpha carved his name into the siding, and when the house was torn down I asked for and got that piece of siding.
.....It was always told to me that none of John and Nancy's children lived to adulthood. The daughter Melissa lived to age 19, never married, and is buried with her grandmother, Thomas H's wife, Nancy Sailors, at LaFontaine. (Thomas H and Nancy are across the road from each other, he died several years before she did in a "spotted fever epidemic".) Nancy is buried with her sister Felicia Milliner. All are buried in the 3 adjoining cemeteries at LaFontaine, Indiana.
.....My Lines lineage is from Pleasant to his son Alvah to his daughter Pauline Clark to my Father Garnet Lines Clark.

"History of Wabash County, Indiana"
Clarkson W. Weesner
Lewis Publishing Co.
Chicago and New York
published in 1914
.....It has been the fortune of Alvah Lines, of Liberty township, to realize many of his worthy ambitions, and through the exercise of good judgment and business sagacity to wrest from his opportunities financial and general success. At this time Mr. Lines is engaged in agricultural pursuits, being the owner of a well-cultivated tract of eighty acres of land, and is also known in his community as a citizen of sterling worth and public spirit. Mr. Lines was born in Liberty township, Wabash county, Indiana, November 10, 1869, and is a son of Pleasant A. and Flora A. (Tyner) Lines.
.....Pleasant A. Lines was born in Rush county, Indiana, January 16, 1840, a son of Thomas H. and Nancy (Sailors) Lines, natives of that county, where they were reared, educated and married. In 1842 the ¬grandparents of Alvah Lines came to Wabash county, locating in Liberty township, where the grandfather entered 119 1/2 acres of wild land, which he subsequently developed into a good and valuable property. The remaining years of his life were passed here and his activities resulted in his becoming one of the substantial men of the township. Ten children were born to the grandparents, of whom four are still living: Pleasant A.; Marshall, who resides at La Fontaine; Martha A., his twin also living at this place, who is the wife of Tobe Miller; and Monroe, who is engaged in farming in Liberty township.
.....Pleasant A. Lines was a child of two years of age when brought by his parents to Wabash county, and here his education was secured in the early district schools of Liberty township, which he attended during the winter months while spending the rest of the year in work on the home farm. When twenty years old he embarked upon a career of his, own, first engaging in clearing land, later running a threshing machine with his father and brother, then splitting rails for several years, and finally engaging in agricultural pursuits, in which he has continued to be engaged to the present time. He is now one of the most substantial men of Liberty township and with his wife is the owner of 650 acres of fine land. In political matters he is a republican, and with his wife and children attends the Antioch Baptist church. He is a man of high integrity and has the esteem and respect of all with whom he has come into contact. Mr. and Mrs. Lines were the parents of three children, of whom two are living: Ursla, who is the wife of Asa Roby of Liberty township; and Alvah.
.....The youngest of his parents' children, Alvah Lines was educated in the district schools of Liberty township and the high school at Treaty, Indiana, thus receiving a thorough training and being well fitted for any position in life which he might be called upon to fill. He remained under the parental roof and assisted his father until reaching the age of twenty-one years, at which time he embarked upon a career of his own, and since that time has continued to be successfully engaged in general farming and stock raising, in both of which ventures he has met with prosperity. At this time Mr. Lines is the owner of a well-cultivated tract of eighty acres, upon which numerous modern improvements have been made, including a good set of substantial farm buildings. For a number of years Mr. Lines was affiliated with the republican party, but in 1912 transferred his allegiance to the progressive party. He has not cared for office, but has never failed to do his share in promoting his community's interests and in contributing to its welfare. .....Mr. Lines was married to Miss Grace Dawes, a sister of L. A. Dawes, who was born on a farm which is now a part of White's Institute, September 6, 1874, and was educated in the schools of Wabash. One child has been born to this union: Pauline, educated at La Fontaine and Wabash, and now the wife of Rufus Clark, of Somerset, Indiana, and the mother of one son, Garnet.

Continental History of Rush County:
454 HISTORY OF RUSH COUNTY
LEROY LINES, a lifelong farmer and stockman, whose thorough knowledge of agricultural matters is generally acknowledged in Anderson township, this county, is a native of this county, born in Noble township on May 8, 1862. His parents were Aaron Noble and Jane (Mcllwa'in) Lines, natives of Rush county, who were married here. Eight children were born to them and the following are living: Charles, of Missoida, Mont.; Ada, wife of Omer Mull, of Homer, Ind.; Sarah, wife of Irvin Carr, of Elwood, Ind.; Mollie, wife of Bert Hester, of Rochester, Minn.; and Leroy. Aaron Noble Lines followed farming in Walker township, this county, until 1884, when he moved to the vicinity of Elwood, Ind., later retired to Elwood and there he died. Leroy Lines was young when his parents settled on a farm in Walker township and in that section he attended school and grew to man- hood, making choice of farming as his vocation. Until his marriage Mr. Lines assisted his father on the home place, afterward rented land and operated it for six years, that farm being the Jefferson Bowles farm in Anderson township. By that time he was ready to make an investment and bought fifty-seven acres which he improved and cultivated, in the meanwhile gradually adding to his holdings until he now owns 213 acres, all adjoining. He farms 123 acres of this land himself and gives considerable attention to stock, hogs mainly, buying feeders and feeding out about 225 head yearly. Mr. Lines is a practical business man and understands how to make farming a profitable industry. In 1884 he married Maude Farlow, daughter of Joseph Farlow and granddaughter of Jefferson Bowles, and they have two children : Joseph, who resides at home; and June, who married Claude Spilman and has two children, Betty Jane and Claude, Jr. Mr. Lines and his family are members of the Methodist Episcopal church at Milroy, of which he is one of the members of the board of trustees. As a good citizen he takes interest in public matters and casts his vote with the Democratic party.

Children of LEROY LINES and MAUDE FARLOW are:
.....i......JOSEPH LINES, b. May 1898 IN.
.....ii......WANETA JUNE LINES, b. May 1898 IN, married CLAUDE SPILMAN.

He was born October 27, 1834 in Rush County, Indiana, and died January 20, 1876 in Nemaha, Nemaha, Nebraska, USA. See Sailors history on this website for descendants. Notes for CHARLOTTE CAROLINE LINES: Died 3 weeks after having 5th child by John Thomas Sailors. Four months later, he married her sister, Mary Jane.

TEN EYCK September 08, 1878 in Nemaha, Nemaha, Nebraska, USA, son of JOHN TEN EYCK and LOUISA PEGG. See Sailors history on this website for descendants

Notes for MARY JANE LINES:
Per Linda Bonnell, January 1999:
Why is it that Lines and Sailors never knew that Mary Jane Lines Sailors also married a Thomas Ten Eyck in Nebraska? She married her deceased sister's husband John Thomas Sailors before she married Tom.
