The Names Of Petitioners of Lincoln Co NC
19 Oct 1779
If this is your first encounter with the records of NC please be aware that the clerks spelled names in any and all ways, even within the same document. You will not be able to use the "find" key in these abstracts. You need to look at each name.
The original list is found in NC Legislature Papers, Box #27, Folder 19 Oct 1779, NC Archives. I abstracted this data in 1982. I later found the data listed in: "Burke County, North Carolina Land Records 1779-1790 and Important Miscellaneous Records 1777-1800, Volume II." Edith Warren Huggins and published 1981. Mrs. Huggins' four-volume series of Burke Co. are still available from Southern Historical Press Inc., P.O. Box 738, Easley, South Carolina 19641-0738.
(Katherine Sullivan sully at vnet.net was kind enough to furnish the following information) The first known petition was dated 25 December 1778 and presented to the General Assembly on 23 January 1779 (the one you have listed). There were three others: two dated 9 [or possibly 19] October 1779, and one dated 1782.
On 4 May 1782 the General Assembly approved the annexation of a portion of Burke Co. to Lincoln Co. A further annexation of part of Burke Co. to Lincoln Co. occurred in 1784. The area annexed in 1784 was the same area that in December 1842 became the new county of Catawba Co.
The original petitions are available at North Carolina Archives filed under the category of "General Assembly Sessions Records." To see the original petitions, email the NC Archives at archives@ncsl.dcr.state.nc.us.
A part of Burke County was annexed to Lincoln Co, NC. The act of 1783 was amended in 1818 ... from the three cornered Island in the Catawba River to the bent of Little River in James Fox's land .. agreeable to the act of 1793 to have a portion of Burke county annexed to Lincoln county 1779 ....

Notes for JAMES LOLLAR:
From: Patricia McMorris,Emerson
To: LOLLAR-L at rootsweb.com
Hi,
.....I'm researching James Lollar b.1781-82 NC; searching for his parents, wife, and sibling's. He's my 4-G.grandfather I don't know who he married or if there's other children?
.....(Most of this info comes from the 1850 census)
James' son John Lollar b:1817 TN.. The Lollar's were in TX.1837, and both were married in order to receive the amt. of land. According to the 1850 Smith Co,TX. census; John/Elizabeth Lollar both :abt.1817-TN, their 6 children all born in TX.; Eli-1838, Mary/Wm-twins-1840, Charlotte T-1843 Elizabeth, America, and (John's father) James age 68 (b:1781/82-NC), and a teacher Wm.Ward age 45 (b:1805). No wife for James or WmWard:
.....By 1860 this family moves abt 25 miles too next county VanZandt Co.; James must have died back in Smith Co. some time aft.1850 and bef.1860, and Can not find Wm Ward!
.....It's speculated that this James 1781 is a son of Jacob, however I do not think so! Reason being other's think that Hugh is Jacob's 1st son, Hugh is born several yr's after James?
.....Jacob is a son of Isaac LOLLAR,Sr;
.....(Did Isaac have 3 son's; Reubin, James, and Jacob?)
.....This is where it start's to get confusing! ( it appear's to be more than one Jacob?)
.....Did Jacob have brother's, Isaac,jr, Henry, and John? This Henry died abt.1830 Ky, had a son James born abt 1781, and a daughter named "Rilla" who married a guy named Eli or James WARD.
It's possible that the Wm. Ward b:1805 on the TX 1850 census was her son? Settling in TX running the Indians out, building schools and developing the town of Tyler.(county seat).
.....Do you know anything abt Jacob's brother's? I've nothing on John!
.....My James Lollar 1781-NC, his son John 1817-TN; his two son's, 1st is Eli 1838-TX, an son Wm.
..... In the late 1840's in TX. Isaac Lollar b:1810 TN and wife Susan Orrick sell 640 ac. to My John Lollar; this is located where the court house and the square sets today in Smith Co.-Tyler,TX. John Lollar was one of five commissioned officers who surveyed Smith Co.; he built the 1st residence there and a 5 ac cemetery "The LOLLAR Cemetery" now known as "Oak Wood Cemetery". John sold his house and property abt.1852 and moved too VanZandt Co-TX John sold most of the lots surrounding the court house. My guess is that he was building a town! He's the 1st person listed on the Deed of Record
book; with abt a 100 other accounts of selling lot's and ac's of land there! He contiues buying an Selling in other county.
.....This Isaac/Susan Lollar is thought to be a son of Hugh (from other sources)! There's also his brother Henry/Jane Lollar; Several times I've thought that there could be a mix up on these Lollar guy's; they lived so close, with in 25-30 miles, of my James and John Lollar (I keep wanting to connect them; HOW?
.....I've checked 1860 thru 1900 census records on Charlotte T.Lollar/McMORRIS; all of these records have her mother an father from ALABAMA. Her mother was Elizabeth Boone, the grandaughter of Squire Boone,Jr; the brother of "The Great Daniel BOONE! Based on the 1850 census her parents were from TN, (maybe they married in TN, and were born in AL?)
.....What do you make of this, Any help is appreciated.
"I've also read Ms Wade's book".
.....The part abt. James living with brother Hugh on the 1860 census in AL. with an Elizabeth and a son Hugh; (she explain's that some people think this Elizabeth to be Hugh's 3rd wife; but she thinks this Elizabeth is the one from 1850 census Smith Co,TX. where James is living); That has been proven to be wrong; (the Elizabeth in AL is indeed probably Hugh's 3rd wife!)
.....My Elizabeth/John Lollar are living in VanZandt Co,TX.in 1860 with same children.
.....Please contact me
Patricia McMorris,Emerson of Texas.

Archibald's will was probated in Spring, 1854 in Rutherford County, NC. The Kelley and Pennick family tree at http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/11694807/person/-417284335 puts Henry Clay Lollar, born 1828, here; other trees assign him to Archibald Lollar and Jamima Brown, another line of Lollars. Who is right? Since he's born in Missouri, and dies there, and the other family moved to Missouri, I'm assuming he goes there. Is he mentioned in this Archibald's will?

23. REUBEN OLIVER LOLLAR (HENRY, ISAAC K.) was born Abt. 1781, and died October 1856 in Cumberland County, Kentucky. He married REBECCA S. COLLIER.

There are two Reuben Lollars born in Kentucky in the same period, one in 1814 and one in 1821. Most trees says the 1814 Reuben is the son of Reuben Oliver Lollar and Rebecca Collier, married Rhoda King, and died in Madison County, Arkansas. I had the 1821 Reuben as the son of this couple; after all, Reuben Oliver did die in Cumberland, KY. The Lollar Family Tree at http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/24901709/person/1578146769?ssrc= says the 1814 husband of Rhoda is the son of James H. Lollar and Sarah Homsley. HELP!

89. ISAAC LAWLER MCKEOWN (CASSANDRA LOLLAR, ISAAC, ISAAC K.) was born October 02, 1818 in Burke County, North Carolina, and died October 10, 1907 in Agency, Wapello, Iowa. He married MATILDA REYNOLDS December 01, 1842 in Meigs County, Tennessee. She was b. abt. 1822 in Tennessee and d. 09 Mar 1895.

Dale Barnhart, April 5, 2012:
.....I enjoyed reading your family tree info. I have a suggestion for a correction on Isaac K. Lollar, my GGGrandfather. Your records show his death place as North Carolina. I transcribed the following two personal accounts and consider them indisputable; Both family stories are from Agency, Iowa, where his death date is shown as Oct 10, 1907.
.....From Ann Graham; Aunt Helen once told me, she remembers seeing Isaac sitting on his porch in the summer, with his, hands vertically in front of him, a few inches apart. He was moving them back and forth slowly. He was trying to catch flies. Aunt Mina remembers seeing him only once and that was on his death bed. The only information we really have on Matilda is that she was born in Hawkins County, Tennessee. There is only one Reynold's family in Meigs County in 1850 and none in Bradley County. Thier names are Thomas and Nancy. They are the right ages and have numerous children. Uncle George, Jane McKeown Barnhart's son, discribed his Aunt "Tildy" as being stern and afraid of her.
.....From Lenore Barnhart Osborn: Ethyl’s grandpa and grandma McKeown lived about ½ mile east and ¼ mile north of Ethyl’s parents near Agency, Iowa. When Ethyl was about three years old (1882), she remembers the visits she and her mother had at Grandma’s house. They walked over there, and Grandma McKeown nearly always cracked some nuts for Ethyl to eat while they visited. It wasn’t long until that was a thing Ethyl expected, so when the greetings were over, she would say, “Come on Grandma, let’s have a crack.” So Grandma would get the old flat iron out and lay it upside down to crack the nuts on, and with Ethyl standing at her knee, they cracked and ate nuts.

Children of ISAAC MCKEOWN and MATILDA REYNOLDS are:
.....i......SARAH CASANAH MCKEOWN, b. May 27, 1845, Charleston, Bradley, Tennessee, USA.
.....ii.....EMILY MCKEOWN, b. abt. 1856, Bradley County, Tennessee.

Notes for NANCY A. JONES:
1850 Dade Co Census, p.274, the Lollars name was misunderstood by the census enumerator and written as Henry "Glolar". Most of the Jones family was illiterate at this time, Nancy is marked as such and she may have given the information. Henry was 36, born in Kentucky; Nancy listed as age 30, also born in KY. Children were Mary age 11, James 10, and Drury 8, all born in KY. Becky age 4, Sarah 2, and Luana 6/12 were born in Missouri. Would seem the family moved from KY to Dade Co between 1843 and 1846.

The Lollars lived next to Richard W. Jones in Dade Co in 1860.

By 1880, Nancy Lollar, age 59, is living with a daughter Thyrza Gilmore age 27 [she must be the 7 year old Ellen from 1860 & the Ellen living with Joseph Gilmore in 1870]. Notes for HANDY LOLLAR:
Dear Jane,
.....My name is Paul Hogue. I am researching the Lollar family of Robertson County, TX.
.....My Grandfather Sylvester Hogue was raised by Robert & Jane Lollar Jennings, following his Mother's death when he was nine days old. Sylvester's Mother, Eliza was born in TN (per census records) in the 1840s and died March 12, 1881 in Cisco, TX. I suspect she may be a Lollar or a Thornton. Eliza's body was brought by horse and wagon to Bald Prairie, Robertson County, TX to be buried (quite a distance). Rhett & Jane Lollar Jennings lived in this community along with Malinda Thornton Lollar, her brother James Clark Thornton and sister Martha Thornton.
.....Jane Lollar was the daughter of Handy & Malinda J. Thornton Lollar. Handy and Malinda were married in Jackson County, AL on December 14, 1854. Jane was born on Sept. 18, 1855. Jane was married to Robert B. (Rhett) Jennings at the Missionary Baptist Church in Stevenson, Jackson County, AL on August 7, 1876 at 9 PM in the evening by Rev. Fraley. R. B. Jennings joined the Missionary Baptist Church in 1874.

The following comes from the head stones in the East Boone Prairie Cemetery in Robertson County, TX:

THORNTON, JAMES CLARK, 06.17.1842 - 04.04.1938, b Jackson Co., AL, s Joseph & Mary Polly Henry Thornton, w Rachel Ann Jennings, CSA

THORNTON, MARTHA EMELINE, 12.12.1823 - 07.02.1900, b Rhea Co., TN, d Joseph & Mary Polly Henry Thornton

LOLLAR, MALINDA J., 08.31.1828 - 03.29.1912, b Rhea Co., TN, d Joseph & Mary Polly Henry Thornton, h Handy Lollar
.....Jane, any assistance you can provide to help identify the family of Handy Lollar of Jackson County, AL will be appreciated. I am hoping that Handy might have had a sister named Eliza. If Handy Lollar is not of your family, could you direct me to someone that is researching this family.
.....We have been searching for several years to identify the maiden name of Eliza. We hope to have a head stone placed on her grave and want it to contain her maiden name.
Sincerely,
Paul Hogue

Notes for JAMES RICHMOND FIKE:
Per http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=cllawson&id=I4422
"James Richmond Fike was a farmer and a furniture dealer. He also bought and sold real estate.

"James served in the 10th Alabama Cavalry, Company B, from March 1863, until 1865, when he surrendered to General Wilson's troops (according to his pension application). After the war, he left Jasper, Alabama (or perhaps he did not return to Jasper following his discharge) and did not return until 1879. Three days after his return, he married Arvenzenia "Arvy" Lawson, who was only 16 years old at the time. James Richmond would have been 31 or 33 years old. It is thought that James was married before his marriage to Arvy, but his first wife had died. One unsubstantiated story has it that he was living in Tennessee with his first wife.

"James and Arvy moved to the Indian Territory where they lived for a time in the Talihina area near her father and brother. In 1900 they moved further west to Greer County, Oklahoma, where they lived until 1908. In 1908, they moved to New Mexico to try to find a healthier climate for Arvy or "Zenie" as she was sometimes called. She apparently suffered from T.B. The move did not help and she died in Elida, New Mexico, on March 17, 1909.

"When they arrived in New Mexico, they found a very inhospitable environment. The wind was supposed to have blown all of the time and their home was made of sod. After Arvy's death, James and his children returned to Altus, Oklahoma.

"This information is from Elmer Dickson, who indicated it was obtained from Virginia Fike Lang, the family bible owned by Texie Tillie Fike Watson, copy of James R. Fike's Civil War pension application and a copy of Arvenzenia Fike's obituary."

Thomas Toler is a native of Johnson County, N. C., and was born in November, 1844. He is a son of Thomas and Mary (Holder) Toler, who were the parents of eleven children, of whom our subject was next to the youngest. Both the paternal and maternal ancestors were of Irish descent, and were pioneers of North Carolina. The father of our subject, who was a native of Wayne County, N. C., owned and operated a very large plantation in Johnson County, where he was a well-known and influential man. He was a soldier in the War of 1812, and for many years served as magistrate, taking an active part in politics and sympathizing with the Whig party. He died in Johnson County in 1849, his widow surviving until 1865. Thomas Toler, the subject of this sketch, was reared to the pursuit of farming, receiving his education in the district and subseription schools of Johnson County. In 1861 he enlisted in Company E, Twenty-fourth North Carolina Infantry, and was mustered into service at Weldon, N. C., June 24. He took part in the Seven Days' Battle around Richmond, the battle of Antietam, Winchester, and at the siege of Petersburg, doing service with the corps of sharpshooters; he received a wound in the left leg and was first confined in the hospital at Richmond. He was then sent home on wounded furlough, where he was captured by Sherman, taken before Blair, and was imprisoned at Hurt's Island, N. Y., until the close of the war. Returning to Johnson County, N. C., he engaged in farming until 1867, when he went to Obion County, Tenn., and farmed [p.906] two years. In 1869 he removed to Jackson County, Ark, and two years later bought a tract of 160 acres. in Glass Township, six acres of which were cleared. He planted an orchard and made some improvements, after which be sold out and reated land. In 1877 he purchased 240 acres, which were partly improved, and which he still owns, having now under cultivation seventy-five acres. upon which he raises some timothy and clover, but more cotton. Mr. Toler read law at one time and now does some successful practicing in the justice's court. having served as justice of the peace since 1883. Mr. Toler was first married, in Sampson County. N. C., in 1864, to Virginia J. Walton, of Raleigh, N. C., who died in 1879. Of the children born to this union four are living, viz.: Thomas W., a physician and surgeon, of Swifton: Charles A., a traveling salesman; Auna V. and Edward C. In 1880 Mr. Toler married Martha Lollar, of Lewrence County, Ark., whose parents. David and Sarah (Michael) Lollar, were natives of North Carolina, and settled in Lawrence County. Ark., before the war, where the mother still lives, the father being deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Toler have three children; William A., Mary Carolina and Mattie.
