Robert Biggen Perkins was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. His great-great-grandson Brigham Young Perkins claims, "My second great grandfather, Robert Biggin Perkins, was born in Old Virginia about the year 1735. He was the son of Richard and wife. He married Betta Lollar. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. At one time, just as he was bringing his gun down on a Tory to fire, a musket ball came and shot the lock off his gun, leaving him otherwise unhurt."

On 27 August 1762, he bought 436 acres on the west side of the Catawba adjoining Thomas Anderson. (Is this a real Anderson? His cousin Ute used the alias John Anderson and James Anderson.)

On 11 January 1765, Justices Alexander Osborn, Jno. Oliphant, and Andrew Allison reported: "Information being made in open Court upon the Oath of John Oliphant Esq. that he has just cause to suspect that John Bridges Jr., Richard Perkins Jr. & Robert Biggam Perkins have feloniously taken & kead away two Stone Horses & one Gelding of the price of L5 each of the property of Persons unknown supposed to belong to some of our Indian Allies the Cherokees it is therefore ordered on motion of Emd. Fanning Esq. Attorney for the King, that a Warrant be issued out signed by Colo. Alexr Osborn Charman of the Court for the apprehending of the afd John Bridges, Richard Perkins & Robt. Biggam Perkins that they may be brought before him or some other of his Majestys Justices of the Peace for sd County & be dealt with." And then: "George the Third, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, etc. To the Sheriff of the County of Rowan Greeting. We command you to summon a John Lowrance, Isaac Lolar, Robert Bigham Perkins, Richard Perkins, Thomas Bridges, John Bridges Senr., David Bridges, Rubin Simson, Peter Lowrance, Margaret Bridges, Matthew Bridges, Eliz. Lorance personally to be and appear before our Chief Justice and his associate Justice of our Superior Court of Justice to be held for the District of Salisbury at the Court House in Salisbury on the 22nd day of Septr. next; then and there to testify, and thet ruth to say, on Behalf of Williamson & John Bridges in a certain matter of controversary in our said Court depending, and then and there to be tried, between us--plantiff--and Willm Simpson and John Bridges Defendant; and this they shall in no wise omit, under the penalty of Twenty Pounds Proclamation Money, Witness James Hasell, Esqr; Chief Justice of our said Province, the 22nd Day of Mar in the VIth year of our Reign, Anno Dom. 1766."

Apparently John Bridges didn't learn a lesson, for in Salisbury District NC: "At a Superior Court held for the District of Salisbury at the Town of Salisbury on twenty second day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty six before the honorable the Justices of the said Court. The jurors for our Soverign Lord the King upon their oath present that John Bridges late of the County of Rowan labourer being a man of evil name and dishonest conversation on the first Day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty six at the Parish of Saint Luke in the County of Rowan aforesaid one grey gelding of the price of five pounds lawful money of Great Britain of the goods and chattels of one Robert Reed then and there being found feloniously did steal take and lead away against the Peace of our Lord the King his Crown and Dignity."

Revolutionary War pay voucher from the North Carolina State Dept. of Archies #16 has "This may certify that by the Upper Board of Auditors for the District of Salisbury Robert Begin Perkins was allowed Four Thousand Seven Hundred & Twenty Pounds currcy for Sundry Public Claims which he is to Receive agreeable to an act of the Gneral Assembly passed at Hallifax in Janry 1781." On the back of the voucher is "Presented on the 30th day of September 1791 on Loan to the United State and since rejected M.S. Kennerd Commissioner. In the 1790 census for 10th Company, Lincoln Co. NC is a Robert Begin Perkins with three males over 16, three males under 16, and three females.

In Salisbury District Court's March term 1779, Robert Biggan Perkins gave Recog. Bond for Nicholas Welch.

On 25 November 1799, Robert Biggan Perkins to Littleton Pettitlo 56 acres bearing the date of 27 August 1762.

The Perkins' neighbors on Mt. Creek in NC were Wm. and Anna Woods Gant from VA. The Gants' eldest daughter Sarah (b. Apr 22, 1760) was married in 1782 to Ute Perkins. The Gants' other twelve children were: Giles, John, Frederick, Britten, Cader, Tyre, Abigail, Elizabeth, Amy, Rebecca, Nancy and LaVina Gant Townley.

...He is descended from William Perkins who was born in 1762 in Rowan Co. NC. He was the son of Moses and Sabret who were in Rowan Co. by 1758. It is believed that this William married Mary, possibly in Wilkes Co. GA. This William moved to SC when the Indians ceded the land. William and his brother, Moses, Jr. settled in the Pendleton, SC district.
William wrote his will in 1816 primarily to punish his older children who had begun to be adults. His daughter Ruth had married Aaron Phillips, "for her disobedience" she was given one negro girl named Malinda and one shilling. My son Moses one shilling for his disobedience and he will not inherit the land where my mother now lives. William wrote a codicil and gave Moses one shilling and 100 acres of land taken from the lower east end of a 300 acre tract. (This is our line and eventually wound up in ALABAMA) In the codicil his daughter Sarah wife of Shadrack Harrison was given one negro girl names Hannach. Sarah had been given a child's part of the estate before she married Shadrack.
William died in 1827 and his will was proven in Anderson County, SC will book A page 322.

Hi Jerry, I don't know if this will help but here is info on some Perkins among my ancestors.
My gggrandmother, Sarah Knox DeArmond, had a dau out of wedlock by Col Jesse McKinney. She and the baby were abandoned. The girl, America, was born 1838 in either Pendleton or Spartanburg, SC. In 1842 Sarah married my gg grandfather, Samuel DeArmond, who reared America. They also had James R (killed in Civil War), Rebecca Carolina DeArmond m William Mallory Kennedy in 1868 in Cherokee Co., GA, Maryanne Texas, m Samuel P. Moore and settled in Ark. and son, John. America married William Perkins, son of Joshua and Hannah Perkins I believe in Pendleton Dist. SC. They had two children, Amanda and John H. (probably Harelson) Perkins. They were together in Pickens Dist SC with the DeArmand family in 1860. William was killed in Civil War and a brother, Samuel, was also killed during war. Joshua, father, left widow Hannah and eight children when he died in 1856. i.e. Josiah, William, Augustus, Mary, Moses, Samuel, Harriet, Elizabeth, Martha Adaline. I am not sure what happened to Amanda, dau of Wm and America. John came to Texas and had one son that I know of who was a good friend to my father. Willie (named after John's father, lived and died in TX without children. I don't know if John had others or not. America remarried in Arkansas but never had more children and died rather young in I believe Yell Co. Samuel DeArmond and Sarah Knox Dearman died in Yell Co ARK. I am going to family reunion in Yell Co. the end of May. I have met the descendants of America Perkins thru the internet and there will be a reunion of the Moores and DeArmand families, also Knox, but they want to know more about the Perkins family since the sister, America, was married to William Perkins. William died early in the war, 1862 He enlisted from Pickens Co., SC I believe. Samuel died ca 1864 (still a minor). Hannah Perkins was made guardian of the orphaned children of children of America and William in 1864 and in 1861 had been made guardian of her own dau, Harriett and Martha.
I don't know if this might be your line or not. Many of the same names show up, but don't they always? If you can fit any of this together, I would be happy for you and me. I thought maybe your William might have been the grandfather of my William. Does it make sense to you. Hope to hear from you.

I have been reading & enjoying your Perkins (of Lincoln Co NC) info. I think I'm related to them but haven't tied it together yet. My ancestor is Basil/Basel Dorsey who came to Linc Co about 1780 m Mary Robinson in 1783 & they went on to Franklin Co GA. Mary was the dtr of Isaac Robinson & Catherine ? It seems that this Catherine is related to the Perkins but I don't know just how as yet. Would you happen to have seen any info on the Dorseys coming into NC (family tradition says Basil was from MD) along with the other MD families. The current info available on Basil appears to be incorrect (son of Francis & Ann) because that Basil John lived, died & is buried in MD & also marr another lady. Once that story was started it just spread & several other Dorsey desc & I are trying to locate our Basil. He was closely associated with other MD families, such as the Bakers, Lowerys & Holbrooks. Any clue you could provide on this dilemma would be appreciated. I would love to find a book telling how & why these Dorseys came into the south. I wasn't able to find the reference (at this hr I can hardly find the keyboard) to Dorsey in the Perkins info although the search engine says it is there.

The were in Washington County, Mississippi Territory, when it was organized in 1810. (VOL. VI, P. 627, UNITED STATES TERRITORIAL PAPERS). He was in the 1820 and 1830 census for Washington County, Alabama.

At the same time not forgetting my oldest children or those of my first wife that is to say Nathan Simpson, Charles Simpson, Kelley Nancy Blackwell and Nancy Wall of which except the last mentioned has received a proportionate of my estate escept the Negroes which came by my last or present wife Mary Wall is living in South Carolina and I have never had it in my power to give her anything and as she is in affluent circumstances I think it is unnecessary to divide my small estate with her.

....I am looking for Susannah PERKINS who married William C. MILLER in Carter TN on 10 October 1830. A letter written in 1867 from Washington TN indicates that they had a son, John MILLER. They were living in Kentucky or Illinois by 1867.
Susannah PERKINS was the daughter of Jacob Perkins and Nancy Ann Graves Perkins. She had the following sibilings: Joseph, John, Joshua, Jacob, Amos, and Lydia, Esther, Kizziah. Her sister, Sarah, died before 1819, and Sarah's sons were Benjamin D. Perkins and William L. Perkins.
....I am researching this entire family as two of my direct ancestors, Joseph and Amos, were my 3rd great and 2nd great-grandfathers.

I am Larry Brule, grandson of a Perkins. Wanting more info on the Isaac, born 1777 in Rowan co, NC. I think this is the father of Isaac jr, b 1795 in KY, Daniel Reece,, b 1797 in KY, Elisha, b 1799 in KY and Solomon, b 1801 in KY. There are three girls also but Elizabeth, born 1805 in KY is the only one we know. They were born in Livingston co, KY. Twice, Isaac refers to himself as Isaac jr.We have all the family history we can find from here down. My Grandmother, Dora Belle Perkins, said our Perkins came from Devonshire, England. I don't remember any names but wished I'd listened to her. She died in 1981 at the age of 92. She was in the OK. land rush and raised in NE. Her father and grandfather, Zadoc Casey Perkins were both born in IL.
Any info I have, you are more than welcome to. Pat Clemons here in Texarkana, TX has helped me get this far.

.....Isaac Perkins, who was killed at the Battle of Stillman's Run in May 1832 (Black Hawk War), was a public probate administrator appointed by the county (confirmed by governor). He handled many probate estates for intestate decedents (people without wills).
.....Ironically, when he died it was without a will, and his brother Elisha M. Perkins was appointed administrator of his estate by the probate court. It took almost two years to get Isaac's estate settled. Elisha was subsequently appointed the county probate administrator after Isaac's death, and had to take over all the probate cases that Isaac had been handling as well as settle Isaac's own estate plus the new cases that arose.
.....My ancestor, Daniel Reese Perkins, was a brother to Elisha and Isaac. We find Daniel Reese, Solomon and Elisha as purchasers at various estate sales in Tazewell County in the early 1830s; many of these probate estates were handled by Elisha. Even the probate judge, Joshua C. Morgan, bids on some of the property that he is overseeing!...

A sale on 17 November 1812 brought $712.42 and household goods appraised at $147.18. Court papers say sons Levi and William are supervised by Orphan Court and Daughters are Elizabeth, age 10, and Catherine, age 5.

In 1812, Catherine Bollinger Perkins is 45 and has been married 24 years.

A Common Pleas Courthouse, Cape Girardeau, MO settlement dated 1830 of William's estate (18 years after his death) has signed receipts to Aaron Perkins for $67 plus $7.50; Catherine Perkins for three Negroes; David Perkins for $10; John Scott attorney for $10; Henry Perkins for $92; McArty for taxes $1.25; Elizabeth Perkins for the hire of Negroes $26.57.

Besides his bison herb, Perkins is proud of his cabin, a replica of the cabin in Belmont County in which his great-great-great-great grandfather Rueben Perkins lived. Rueben Perkins was married to Elizabeth Hupp, the first white woman born west of the Monongahela River, said Freddie Perkins. They were persuaded by Indians to settle in Belmont County during the French and Indian War, to protect an Indian lead mine from the British and French, said Freddie Perkins. Rueben's home was protected by a white feather over the door. Perkins' Wadsworth Township home displays a similar white feather placed there by a Cherokee Indian who visited from the North Carolina Cherokee lands. "The white feather was a sign to Indians that the house with the feather wasn't to be burned," said Perkins. "Our Rueben's cabin is his to a T. He killed many panthers, bears, wolves, deer, wild cats and other ferocious and dangerous animals. The stories he related about these were thrilling and interesting. The same fall he came to his new home in the wilderness a great calamity befell him - a loss he felt keenly - it was the death of his wife. After a few years he was married again to a Virginia lady, by whom he had five children. In 1805 he entered the quarter section of 28, in now Washington township, and which is now owned by some of his grandsons. On the 8th of April, 1816, whilst engaged in work he suddenly fell to the ground and expired of heart disease. His death was greatly felt by his children and friends." PERKINS, REUBEN settled in this township on Captina Creek in 1798. He was b on Susquehanna river in 1767, of English extraction. In 1785 he m Elizabeth Hupp and had: Everhart, Reuben, Jr., Lewis, Elijah, Elias & Rachel. Reuben's wife died and he later m a Virginia lady; had 5 more ch. He entered land in 1805 in Sec. 28, this township. Reuben d suddenly while working on Apr. 8, 1816.

Both the following paragraphs are from the History of Belmont County.

"Reuben Perkins was born in Harford Co., Maryland in 1767. He married Elizabeth Hupp in Washington Co., Pennsylvania in 1785. In 1798, he came with his seven children to settle in the Captina Valley just west of what is now Alledonia. Reuben died in 1816 and is buried in the Perkins Cemetery on Co. Rd. 86, about 1/2 mile north of St. Rt. 148."

"Jonas Groves was born in Virginia in 1775. He married Rosanna Perkins, the sister of Reuben Perkins mentioned above. His son James was born in West Virginia in 1799. In 1805, they moved to Jefferson Co., Ohio and in 1808, they settled in Belmont County. James married Nancy Danford (dau. of Peter) in 1825. They had eleven children. James died in 1866 and his wife Nancy died in 1887. Both are buried in the Bend Fork Cemetery."

Reuben Perkins migrated from Baltimore Co.,MD to Washington Co, PA ca 1774, he settled in "Ten Mile" country. Reuben Perkins is on the 1781 Tax List as a single man with one horse in Morgan Twp., Washington Co., PA. In 1784 he is still listed as a single man with one horse in Morgan Twp., Greene Co., PA. They moved to Belmont Co., OH before Elizabeth died in 1798. - Sarah Golda Sitz

1798 - moved from the Ten Mile Creek area of Western Pennsylvania to Captina Creek area of Belmont Co., OH

In 1802 he took a "Donation Tract" of land given by the Ohio Land Company to males (18 and over) who promised to carry a gun and protect the approaches to the Marietta Settlement from the Indians. This was a quarter section of 28 in Washington township and became the home farm which was passed onto his heirs. Later he had a Land Patent for all of Sec. 20, range III, Twp. XXV

Averhart Perkins is one of the heirs at law of Reuben Perkins deceased states that sometime in the year 1816, his father died intestate (no will) leaving petitioner and also Reuben, Elias, Elijah and Crese Perkins of lawful age and Ruth aged 11 years, all of Belmont Co. Rebecca king of lawful age, Zopher aged 18 years, Xenophen, aged 15 years, Calvin aged 13, all of the county of Monroe and Rachel Christler, wife of George, of lawful age who lives in Beaver County, PA and Elisabeth Majilton wife of Thomas, who resides in Green Co., PA heirs at law and coparceners with your petitioner. Reuben, dec. owned NE 1/4 of S.28, T.5, R.4, Marietta lands in Belmont Co. The Majiltons deeded their share to petitioner 2 Oct 1822. Wm. Kennon appointed gdn. ad item. Court ordered partition at the May term, 1826, land sold to Everhart Perkins for $334."

Reuben Perkins Bible
.....The family Bible, which measures about 5" x 7" is now 207 years old. The first record reads "Reuben Perkins his bible in the year of our Lord 1791. Reuben Perkins was born ---illegible for 3 lines which appear to have been erased." The Bible contains handwritten records of births and deaths by at least four persons. The latest entry was 1919. Sometime after that date the Bible was delivered to a Belmont County Extension Agent. Margaret Perkins of Belmont who has protected the artifact for many years, states that the Agent gave the Bible to her father, Dennis Perkins perhaps as early as the 1930's. The late Frank Perkins told me several years ago that a Mr. Ruschak found the Bible among stored items in an old barn along Captina Creek. It is assumed that he gave it to the Agent.
.....Margaret Perkins has graciously passed the Bible to me for an indefinite time. It is being protected and will eventually be given to a younger generation. Herewith is the information pertaining to births & deaths as recorded by our ancestors:

Both the following paragraphs are from the History of Belmont County.

"Reuben Perkins was born in Harford Co., Maryland in 1767. He married Elizabeth Hupp in Washington Co., Pennsylvania in 1785. In 1798, he came with his seven children to settle in the Captina Valley just west of what is now Alledonia. Reuben died in 1816 and is buried in the Perkins Cemetery on Co. Rd. 86, about 1/2 mile north of St. Rt. 148."

"Jonas Groves was born in Virginia in 1775. He married Rosanna Perkins, the sister of Reuben Perkins mentioned above. His son James was born in West Virginia in 1799. In 1805, they moved to Jefferson Co., Ohio and in 1808, they settled in Belmont County. James married Nancy Danford (dau. of Peter) in 1825. They had eleven children. James died in 1866 and his wife Nancy died in 1887. Both are buried in the Bend Fork Cemetery."

Notes for JONAS GROVES:
The Groves family has a tradition to the effect that the family was originally that of Von Graf in Germany, that the ancestors were expelled for political reason, and later came to Maryland with Lord John Calvert, first Earl of Baltimore. Jonas Groves, the father of David and grandfather of Samuel C., was born in Maryland, and was with a brother and sister, brought to Noble county, Ohio, by his parents, locating in the neighborhood of Mt. Ephraim when the country was all new...........

1820 Census of Ohio (p.146) lists a Jonas Groves in Belmont County.

Jonas Jr. is said to have been in Jefferson Co. in 1805, then Goshen Twp. Belmont Co. in 1808. Census shows him in "Waynes" in 1820 and 1830.

Jonas' friends were Joseph, William, and Barnett Groves. They were among the first settlers in Kirkwood Twp., Belmont Co. and they jointly bought land in April 1830. Reference is: "Early Ohio Settlers -- Purchasers of Land in SE Ohio 1800-1840". Marietta, Washington Co., Ohio. Flagstaff Library 929.37719 B534c. Jonas had three listings dated 1816 - 1828.

History of Belmont County, Ohio, says Joseph, Wm., & Barnett GROVES, brothers from PA, settled in Kirkwood T., ca. 1800. On 23 Feb. 1802, Barnett GROVES purchased land in Kirkwood T (R 6, T 9). Barnet(t) may have died before 1820, as he was on the 1810 Census, Kirkwood T., but the 1820 Census had a Hannah, who might have been his widow, p. 260, same p. as Wm.

…There is a Bartholomew Manlove who was born in Delaware and who later made the move apparently with his family from there to Kentucky to the Bourbon, Scott - Fayette Counties area. He is listed in the census of 1810, 1820 and 1830 in Kentucky. He made the move to Texas in 1832 and a passport application to Stephen H. Austin requested that he be allowed to become a citizen. That area was Mexico at that time. His wife Aberilla was listed on the request as well as the number of his children.
…The 1850 Texas census listed his wife, Aberilla Manlove, and she was shown to have been born in Maryland. All subsequent censuses have also shown the same information.
…We have many historical items and narratives on Bartholomew but his wife only lurked in the back- ground. Now because of your listing perhaps we have some family for her!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have searched for any information on her for at least 10 years. This was truly a "stonewall".

Abner Lee, b. 1760, died on 7 October 1852. He was married twice. The first was to Catharine Wilson. They issued George W. Lee , Ephraim Lee, b. 9 Sept, 1787, Richard and Levi Lee, twins b. 18 Jan, 1791, at lteast one child who died soon after birty, the Abner and William Lee, twins b. 6 Oct, 1786, Ailcy, b. 1805, James Henry b. 1814. Late in life, he married Sarah (Sally)Johnson Miller, who bore him two more sons. Thomas Granville Lee, b 14 June 1863 and Greenwood Lee, b. 1 Oct, 1840. I am descended from Thomas Granville Lee, Greenwood's brother. Thomas Granville died 18 June, 1904 in Ripley County Missouri and buried at Dismang Cemetery in Ripley County. He married Belle Fields in 1862, who died in 1868. He married Emily Upchurch Lee. His children were Charles Henry Lee b March 26, 1880, Robert Samuel b. April 7,1863, Myrtle Ruth, b. Nov 11, 1918, and possibly one more child. They all lived in the Ripley County area. Robert Samuel Lee was my great-grandfather. He married Zora Bell(e) on April 4, 188?. Their issues were Odie Bell(e) Lee, born 14 July, 1890, Robert Ernest Lee, July 4, 1895, Horace Granville Lee, Jan 27, 1898 and Delos Solon C. Lee, bo Oct 27, 1902. Robert Ernest Lee was my grandfather. Robert Ernest married Ada Upshaw. They gave birth to Ruby Helen, John Truman, Ruth (d. at 4 years), Ermadean, Robert Eugene, Billie Ray, and Ernestine. My father is Billie Ray. His name was supposed to be William. He was born June 2, 1933. He married my mother, Adeline Pauline Lietzow in February, 1952. I was born October 3, 1953. I have two brothers, Keith Wayne and Brian Ray. My parents and brothers live in the St. Louis, Missouri area. My father moved from Ripley County as soon as he reached working age. His father had died when he was six, and his mother in 1953. I have 3 children and we live in Texas. I do have more information, including a photo of Thomas Granville Lee and his wife. Write back please. My family, like everyone else, is looking for a possible connection to Robert E. Lee. Looks like our family was pretty remarkable even without the connection. Old Abner was a busy guy.

.....I am not related to your line of Lee's, but did find this while searching for mine. It shows your Abner Lee was born 1760 in North Carolina and died 7 Oct 1852 in Jackson County, Tennessee. It shows he married Sally Miller on 12 Sept 1835 in Jackson County, TN It states that in 1855 she would have been 60 years old. It shows their issue as Alsy or Ailcy VAn Zandt who was 49 in 1855 and a grandson, son presumably of Alsy, John G VanZandt who was 27 in 1855. It shows the name of an Isacc Van Zandt, "clergyman", but it states it does not explain his relationship to this family. These came from extracts of those that applied for military pensions.
.....It states that he did live in Washington County, VA during the Rev War and after the Rev he moved to TN and also lived in Ill for a period of 1 year. He had applied for the pension in 1846 in Jackson County, TN. She applied for the BLW there in 1855. It states that he died at the home of his daughter, above named in Jackson Co., TN on 7 Oct 1852 and that he had lived in her home for a period of two years at the time of his death. Hope this helps.

Notes for WILLIAM WILSON:
Under the treaty of Calhoun dated July 8, 1817 white men we empowered to claim reservations of land in Jackson County Alabama based on their wives status as Cherokee indians. Accordingly on July 11, 1818 William Wilson was awarded reservation #128 on the Flint River "in the right of his wife" with a family of 3. This means that Hulde (Hulda) was a Cherokee Indian. This comes down through her mother who was a Cherokee Indian. Her mother was Lucretia Wilson who married Aquila Sherrill.

.....I don't believe the William Wilson who obtained one of the Wilson Reservations on the Flint River in Madison Co AL in right of his wife and the Thomas Wilson who also obtained Reservation same place (a few miles north of William) in his own right are the family of Hulda (Sherrill)and William Wilson. Their son Thomas at least came into Jackson Co 1819, then back and forth to Franklin Co TN for the next 14 years. William joined Mud Creek Church in Jackson Co by June 1820 about 30 miles from the Reservation. Had the reservationist moved the 30 or so miles to the Bellefonte area he would have lost his Reservation land. June 28 1823 the William Wilson with Reservation and others petitioned for fee simply title. The Thomas Wilson Reservation was granted in fee simple in 1819 under a different treaty. In 1830 there were 3 Williams in Jackson Co and 1 in Madison Co. Major Thomas Wilson freely acknowledged and raised his mulatto grandson b. 1864 but never said anything about Indian parentage, and apparently he was a great talker. Also none of these Wilsons is on the 1835 Indian census Jackson Co - I could not locate the Madison Co enumeration due to the extremely poor quality of the microfilm.
.....One other point that should be clarified, Hulda (Sherrill) Wilson died after 1829, but before 1840. She is included in William's hh 1830 but not 1840 census. A new membership list of Mud Creek Church was drawn up 1829, her name was on it. The clerk then added names as new members joined and made notations as members died, moved or were dropped from membership.

Can anyone help with the children of these two people? I need to know if Ephraim Perkins born c1795 NC and Jesse Perkins born 1798 in NC or TN are their children. We know that Ephraim & Jesse are brothers and that both were in St. Clair county, IL in 1820...so was Joshua, but we have no proof that they are his sons. Ephraim later returned to Benton co., TN and Jesse went to Crawford & Scott county, Arkansas.

Notes for ELISHA PERKINS:
They owned 9 slaves in the 1790 census. They lived at Pleasant Valley. Elisha died about the age of 35 without a will. His son, Alfred inherited one-half of the farm and the other half another son inherited. The other son died shortly there after also without a will, but a change in the law resulted in Alfred and his three sisters sharing equally in that half.

In Burke Co. NC Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions, July Sessions 1818, Alfred Perkins filed documents stating his father died intestate in or about 1793, leaving considerable land, and he named his siblings and asked that the land be divided up.

It has been suggested that Jane was a daughter of Jacob Sherrill Sr. to whom the couple signed a Lease & Release in Lincoln Co. Deed Book 16 p. 255-258 for 140 acres. She married again to a Henry Hiland.

Born near Dundee, dignified and blunt in manner, he wore knee breeches and powdered hair. He was an Episcopal clergyman, ordained to the priesthood in May, 1821, age 63.

Robert was a Revolutionary War soldier. He was Burke County's first postmaster, from 23 May 1826 until his death in 1834; by 1833, his yearly salary had reached $11.86. They lived at "Mary's Grove," named after his wife, on Lower Creek, and in 1780 owned two black slaves.

"MARY PERKINS, daughter of JOHN PERKINS, SR., married the Rev. ROBERT JOHNSON MILLER, a native of Scotland, a clergyman of the Episcopal Church, a high-toned gentleman of the old school, dignified and blunt in manner like most Scotsmen I have known; yet benevolent and kind. He joined in marriage the descendants of the old pioneers, and baptised their children, and prayed that God's blessing might rest upon them. He married my father and mother in 1803. His dress at that time was knee breeches, black silk stockings, low shoes, with silver knee and shoe buckles. He had a rubicund complexion and powdered hair. Thus he stood, prayer book in hand, a fine specimen of an English parson, of Goldsmith's days."

"He lived on a plantation left to his wife, MARY PERKINS, on Lower Creek, (Caldwell County) his residence near the roadside named after his wife, "Mary's Grove." I remember his baptising a child of one of Burke's leading citizens, who prided himself in always redeeming his pledges. (In similar cases many I fear do not feel the responsibility resting upon them, in becoming sponsors for children and taking upon themselves the solemn vows and promises required in baptism). A large assemblage of persons were present, in what was then a part of the present ( in 1894) building of the Presbyterian Church. After the usual preliminary prayers, etc., preceding the promises to be made by the Godfather and mother, the question:"Dost thou, in the name of this child, renounce the devil and all his works, the vain pomp and glory of the world" and so on to the end. To the astonishment of the congregation the response came from the father, loud and distinct, "I do not sir." The parson looked at him sorrowfully in the face and said. "you will on the part of your child?" He replied, "I will on his part." "I wish you could say as much for yourself," said the parson. This is the only instance on record, so far as I know, where the matter had proceeded, as far as in this case, where the parent could not conscientiously, and therefore would not, make a promise which he did not intend to fulfill - to his credit be it said."

"ALEXANDER PERKINS, brother-in-law of PARSON MILLER, was a profane man, and frequently sorely tried the patience of the good man. Illustrating this, on one occasion, he got the upper hand of the parson. He was on the way to market, with a heavily loaded wagon drawn by a team of spirited horses. The public road passed in front and near the parson's residence, near the summit of a hill. The horses, refusing to pull; PERKINS, irritated, beating the horses, cursing and swearing, brought the parson out. And rebuking him for his profanity, he said, "Brother ALEX, don't you see that all this abuse of the dumb brutes and the taking of the name of your Maker in vain, does no good? Why, then, do you persist in doing so?" "Well", he said,"Parson, that is so. I have tried cursing and beating them with no effect. Now you get down on your knees and pray and let us see if that will make the horses pull the wagon up the hill." Leaving in disgust, he said, "PERKINS, you are a depraved, incorrigible man." Mr. MILLER left 2 or 3 daughters, one of whom, MARGARET MILLER married JOHN S. SUDDERTH. The sons were ELISHA P. MILLER, WILLIAM S. MILLER, ROBERT J. MILLER, ELI W. MILLER, JNO. W. MILLER, GEORGE O. MILLER and NELSON MILLER. The oldest, ELISHA, married SYDNEY CALDWELL, the youngest daughter of ROBERT CALDWELL, SR. He was very popular and was elected to the State Legislature from Burke County in 1836-38, from Caldwell County in 1844-48."

66. EPHRAIM PERKINS (JOHN, ELISHA, RICHARD, ROBERT) was born November 06, 1764 in North Carolina, and died Abt. 1843. He married ELIZABETH ABERNATHY February 01, 1796 in Lincoln County, North Carolina, daughter of DAVID ABERNATHY and MARTHA TURNER. She was born Abt. 1759. Ephraim and his brother John introduced the first good pedigreed horses to the county. He was almost six feet, light-complected, with blue eyes, a massive forehead, and a finely chiselled nose. He was a Senator from Lincoln County in 1805, occupying the seat which his father, Gent. John Perkins held when he was Senator from Lincoln county In 1795.

He met (1) ELIZABETH BOLLINGER. He married (2) REBECCA MOORE Abt. 1822 in North Carolina, daughter of JAMES MOORE and REBECCA ?. She was born 1782 in Maryland, and died April 08, 1852 in Caldwell County, North Carolina.

Notes for ALEXANDER PERKINS:
In 1805, a lawsuit by Elizabeth Bullinger resulted in him being ordered to pay seventeen pounds eleven shillings and three pence for child support for a two year old child. Even after Elizabeth married Daniel Shuford in July of 1807, she again sued Alexander for child support 17 April 1810 for Susanna Perkins, "an ellegatemete child of Alexr. Perkins." See Lincoln Co. NC court records.

He represented Burke in the Senate of the NC General Assembly 1815, 1817, 1819.

1. ALEXANDER HAMILTON4 SNODDY (THOMAS3, SAMUEL2, UNKNOWN1) was born 1807 in Iredell Co, NC, and died May 1860 in Franklin Co, AR. He married (1) CAROLINE ?. She was born Abt. 1824 in MO, and died Abt. 1854. He married (2) SARAH ? October 07, 1855 in Franklin Co, AR. She was born February 17, 1826 in AR, and died March 10, 1877 in Alix, Franklin Co, AR.
