They emigrated with the Saints to Council Bluffs, Iowa, and then to the "Valley of the Mountains", where they arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah, October 18, 1849. Here they lived during the winter, moving to South Bountiful, Davis Co., October 30, 1850. He was ordained a High Priest under the hands of Pres. Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball. Grandmother died December 30, 1863 in South Bountiful, in full faith of the Gospel. She was buried in Salt Lake City Cemetery, Jan. 1, 1864. 195. REV. LEVI PERKINS (UTE, ROBERT BIGGEN, RICHARD, RICHARD, RICHARD, ROBERT) was born October 15, 1787 in Lincoln County, North Carolina, and died July 12, 1876 in Cookville, Putnam, Tennessee, USA. He married (1) LUCY RHEA July 19, 1808 in White County, Tennessee, daughter of AARON RHEA and MARY HOWELL. She was born October 25, 1787 in Patrick County, Virginia, and died March 12, 1854. He married (2) MARY ELINOR BURGESS August 24, 1854 in Putnam County, Tennessee.
Notes for REV. LEVI PERKINS:
Levi Perkins had ten children by his first wife, one by his second. His first wife Lucy Rhea whom he married on July 19 1808, died 13 March 1854. W. J. Perkins was present at her death. Levi remarried on 24 August 1854 Putnam County to Elenor Borman whose first husband Bethel Bownam had died in Mercer County, Missouri, about 15 September 1853.
Levi did not go with his father's family into Illinois but remained in Tenn. Levi was in the 4th Tennessee Militia with Col. Robert Steele in the War of 1812, when he was 28, 5'10", with black eyes and black hair and a dark complexion. He was discharged at Fayetteville on 23 May 1814. As an itinerant Church of Christ minister with a home on the line between White and Putnam counties, he'd marry couples in the kitchen or living room, depending on their home county, and he did baptisms in a nearby creek. Daughter Marta covered the circuit with him. Levi was buried with Lucy by the old "Bunker Hill" in the Perkins Cemetery near Cooksville. Nellie then married and outlived William Ferris.
Notes for MARY ELINOR BURGESS: Elinor Burgess was known as "Nellie" and was a widow with seven children when she married Levi Perkins; they had one child together. After Levi's death, Nellie married and outlived William Ferris.

196. ROBERT BIGGIN PERKINS (UTE, ROBERT BIGGEN, RICHARD, RICHARD, RICHARD, ROBERT) was born Abt. 1789 in Pendleton District, South Carolina, and died 1863 in Barry County, Missouri. He married SARAH ANN NORRIS, daughter of DAVID NORRIS and BETSY ?. She was born 1792 in Warren County, Tennessee, and died June 11, 1884 in Crawford County, Arkansas.
Notes for ROBERT BIGGIN PERKINS:
According to HISTORY OF BENTON, WASHINGTON, CARROLL, MADISON, CRAWFORD, FRANKLIN, AND SEBASTIAN COUNTIES, ARKANSAS (Goodspeed Publishing Co., 1889) Robert went to Warren Co. TN after coming of age, traveling through unbroken country with a one horse and ox team. About twenty years later he went to Lafayette Co. MO and farmed 13 years. He had nine negroes, two wagons and teams, and other good property which he sold for $35,000 and then spent a year in Washington Co., where he made a crop, going in 1841 to Barry Co. MO, where he died in 1863.
Sarah was the daughter of David and Betsy Norris; David was born in the U.S. of Irish parentage and settled in Tennessee, while Betsy was a Tennessee native, but both died in Lafayette Co. MO. Robert and Sarah went from Warren Co. TN to White Co. TN by the 1820 census (where lived a Levi, Absolom, and Ute Parkins) and to Lafayette Co. Missouri by 1830.
In Vo. F of White Co. TN Deeds, page 8, is an Indenture dated 27 January 1817, Robert B. Perkins for $500, 80 acres on Cane Creek to Ireby and Corder Stone. page 239, Robert A. Pirkins 28 February 1818 Indenture $450 on headwaters of Cherry Creek. Page 82 of Vol. F has an Indenture for 13 August 1816, Davis Nores and Robert B. Purkins, $100 paid, 150 acres on Cane Creek. Wit: Thomas and Corder Stone.
A Robert B. Perkins was a witness in a murder trial in 1853 in Barry County, Missouri, according to http://thelibrary.springfield.missouri.org/lochist/periodicals/wrv/V7/N1/F79k.htm "The witnesses, John Perkins, Elizabeth Perkins, Robert B. Perkins, William Perkins, Amanda Cornielson, Henry McCary and A. B. Thomason, all of whom were near neighbors, gave bond at Cassville to appear at the Circuit Court in Neosho on "the first Monday after the fourth Monday in April, 1854" for the trial."
He was said to have participated in the California Gold rush and that he was a Confederate and of the aged taxpayers and slave holders of Barry County Missouri. Goodspeed also records that in 1862, after the Battle of Pea Ridge, Robert Biggan Perkins and his son William (who was said to have killed old Mr. Antles), and their slaves were killed by Union troops at their home on Washburn Prairie. The troops rode up to the house and asked Sarah Norris Perkins where her menfolks were. She told them they were in the cornfield. The troops rode to the cornfield and brought Robert Biggan Perkins and his son William and their remaining slaves to the house and shot them (white and black) in front of Sarah Perkins. (in 1862 almost all the slaves in the four southwest Missouri counties had been freed by Union troops. A few old slaves and colored orphans were allowed to remain with their master's families.) The troops buried Robert Biggan Perkins and his son William in a single grave and the slave's bodies were left unburied. In the 1950s Robert Biggan Perkins and his son William's unmarked grave could still be found in a pine grove in a field in the Pasley Community on Washburn Prairie. Sarah Perkins died on 11 June 1864 at the home of her son Jesse Perkins in Crawford County Arkansas. This source also states that the compiler's grandmother Frances Isabel Logan Brown, often told of how her great grandfather and great uncle were killed. The slave's bodies were never buried for she could recall seeing their bones when she was a child!

From Lee Harris: According to James Murrell Perkins, son of Martha Hague and William Gant Perkins, Robert and William Perkins and their slaves were killed near a grist mill close to Roaring River in Barry County, Missouri. He is also supposed to have said that the family knew exactly who one of the bushwhackers was, so they waited a short while, rode south a few miles. and killed him. This is strictly by word of mouth but the same story was told by several of James Murrell's sons.

Elliott Herndon b. About 1831, aged 19 in 1850 census
Birthplaces and dates for these Perkins children came from the 1991 IGI, original source not researched. No identification could be determined for "Female", above. Perhaps she was an orphaned niece. Elliott Herndon, who is listed with this family in the 1850 census, was surely the son of one of Charlotte's brothers, who may have died young, or the son of Charlotte's father Elliott and his second wife. Young Elliott may have been with the family since the 1840 Boone Co.,census, when an unidentified male, aged 5-10, is listed with the Perkins family. Elliott may be a brother to Mary Herndon, who may be the unidentified female enumerated with the Aaron and Elizabeth (Herndon) Richardson family in 1840 in Boone Co. IN.
Jesse and Charlotte Perkins are members of the Pleasant Run Baptist Church in Rushville, Rush Co., Indiana in 1823, and later members of the Presbyterian Church in Hopewell, Boone Co., Indiana. Notes for EPHRAIM PITTILO PERKINS:
He goes on to say that the cemetary was laid out with common surnames all in the same rows. Because of this, and the fact that there are some large open spaces between marked Perkins graves, they believe the space in between is occupied by Perkins members whose markers deteriorated over the years. Hafen recruited Dr. F. Richard Hauch of the Archeological Research Institute of Utah to help him search this area of the cemetary using ground penetrating radar. (You've gotta love this guy.) While definitive evidence wasn't found, suggestive evidence indicated that several graves may be located in that area. He did note that the marker on Ute Perkins I grave was still in good condition. And he says his next newsletter will contain the complete text of the historic marker they will be erecting.

I saw your message on the Herndon Website. I am assembling data on the descendants of Elliott and Sarah (Carter) Herndon, parents of Charlotte Herndon Perkins. I am especially interested In Elliott Herndon, age 19, with the Jesse Perkins family in the 1850 census in Boone County, IN. I think he may be the son of Elliott,Sr. and his second wife Susan Mussett. Do you have any information on this person? I am sending along a family group sheet for Jesse and Charlotte. I would be most interested in anything you have to add.

I'm looking for any info you may have on the family of John Banister/Bannister and his wife, Nancy Patsy Perkins. John was b.1792 SC/NC and Nancy was b.1797 SC/NC. John & Nancy Banister were listed on the 1850 & 1860 Wabash Co census. Any help on the Banister/Bannister surname would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Kathy Bargerhuff philly at netusa1.net

Levi Perkins came to Rush County in 1822. By the 1840 census, Levi and Matilda were in Boone Co. IN
William Perkins was the guardian of his minor heirs.
Margarett Perkins b. 1827 in Indiana. I think that she may be the daughter of Levi S. and Matilda Lines Perkins. Margarett married Everett O. Scott and in the 1850 census of Boone County, Indiana is living next door to Levi and Matilda. At that time, Martha Ann Perkins is the oldest child living in the Perkins household and is 18 years old, so there is a possibility of older children or child. When Margarett marries her parents are in attendance at the marriage, they were married in 1846.

A SEARCH IN WEBSTER CEMETARY
Ephraim Petillo Perkins died September 15, 1834 and was the first individual buried in what was then the Wildwood Cemetery; the Webster Cemetery of today. His weathered marker still stands. Eighteen years ago, Waldo Perkins visited this cemetery and noted that a 21 foot linear space, void of any markers, existed between Ephraims headstone and a marker for Mary Perkins who died in 1860. Space void of headstones or markers also existed on the other side of Ephraim and Mary's markers. Mary was the daughter of Avery A. Perkins. Avery is the son of Ephraim Perkins, who in turn is the son of Reuben Perkins. Reuben is the oldest son of Revolultionary War veteran Ute Perkins I, the first permanent white settler in Fountain Green Township, Hancock County, IL. He and wife Sarah, with their sons, daughters, spouses and grandchildren, twelve original families, founded or lived near Perkins Settlement (present day Webster). During the time period between 1834 and 1860, other Perkins's died and were undoubtedly buried in this cemetary as this was the only cemetary in the immediate area. These were:
Levi McFadden Perkins, the 13 year old son of William G. and Dicy Ray Perkins, who died September 19, 1834, just four days after Ephraim Petillo Perkins.
Hyrum Perkins, the 17 year old son of Absalom and Nancy Martin Perkins, who died in 1838.
Infant daughter of William Job Perkins (Ephraims son) and Martha Randall Perkins (William G'.s daughter), 0-5 years in 1840 census.
Sarah Caroline Perkins Shipley, daughter of Absalom and Nancy Martin Perkins, and wife of John Shipley, who died in January 1843.
James Caffrey Perkins, 16 year old son of Absalom and Nancy Martin Perkins who died in 1843.
Ute Perkins, revolutionary war veteran, 83 years of age, died March 11, 1844.
Sarah Gant Perkins, wife of Ute, 85 years of age, died June 6, 1845.
Perhaps Hyrum Carlos Perkins, 3 week old son of Ute II and Anna Warren Perkins, who died November 10, 1845.

PIONEERS AND PROMINENT MEN OF UTAH says he was born between Chillicothe and Renton, Grundy Co. Missouri. They came from Tennessee in the fall of 1838 to Grundy Co. MO. His wife wove the first cloth in the township in 1841. He captained one company in the 1848 migration under Brigham Young. The family is buried in Salt Lake City, Utah.
.....Wilson and Dianna joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1848. As soon as the joined the Mormon Church word was sent to them that they must leave the state in a certain length of time or suffer mob violence. So they packed the wagons with the things they needed most leaving their comfortable home in Grundy, Missouri.
.....In 1848 the large family started for Council Bluffs and then on the long march across the plains. On their arrival in the Salt Lake Valley they passed through many hardships. In August 1949 his wife passed away of mountain fever and a month later Wilson passed away, as well as their 2 oldest sons. The good people of Salt Lake took their children into their homes and cared for them until their grandparents came in covered wagons across the plains in October 1849. They the parents didn't know of the passing of their family members until they reached fort Laramie on their way to the valley.
.....The children with their grandparents lived in Salt Lake until the next year and then they moved to Bountiful, Utah along with their Negro slave family.
.....He is my great great grandfather.

Text: Some of the men killed a Buffalo and the train laid over and jerked the meat...One evening we children built a bonfire on the side of the mountain and were sitting around telling stories and having fun. William took the buffalo hide unbeknown to us, and wrapped it around himself and came pawing and bellowing down the mountain side throwing dirt and rocks in every direction. We could not see very well as we only had the light from the bonfire, so we thought that some wild animal was about to spring on us. We all went tumbling down the mountainside screaming and yelling at the top of our lungs. William thought this was a big joke.

Jesse Nelson Perkin's marriage to Rhoda McClelland was the first marriage in the township in Grundy County, Missouri. "The first young couple to unite their hands and hearts for better or worse, were Mr. Jesse N. Perkins and Miss Rhoda McClelland. Miss Rhoda lived in the Northern part of Grundy County now Mercer. and the wedding was preformed at her father's home near where Princeton is now situated. This was the earliest marriage in the township, and took place in 1843. The couple remained but a short time, forsook their home and friends and joined the Mormons and went to Salt Lake city, Utah, where Mr. Perkins became a Preacher and high dignitary in the Mormon Church.
"Jesse N. Perkins who left Mo. in 1848 probably traveled in the company commanded by W.C.Perkins. Perhaps his brother Wilson Gardner Perkins and his father followed the next year. Some of his family may have been left behind. But father and brothers, Wilson G.. and Andrew H. Perkins all buried in the Salt Lake cemetery were part of the Movement. "

"Then one day Henry Lee came, he having been sent north to see how things were coming and to go and get news of Johnston's Army. This man Lee, whose father was a doctor, stated that I could not live until morning. That same day Monroe Perkins arrived. It was an old belief that the seventh son should be a doctor, and Perkins was the seventh son. He loosened my clothing and rubbed me for a few minutes. Well sir, I got better right straight, and it was no time before I could talk and was well again. When Perkins made his trip back to Provo and my father and mother learned of my illness they came hurrying back as fast as the old oxen would bring them." James was 17 yrs. old.
