DESCENDANTS OF ADAM SHERWELL/SHERRILL Part 2

by Jane A. Leavell

I've tried to delete all the descendants of Perkins or Lollar, since they are listed on this site in the histories of those families (and it was such a pain in the buttocks to delete several hundred pages that I won't be updating this history very often (if ever--contact me to see if I have more data). Use the PicoSearch engine on my home page to locate specific people. Good luck, and happy hunting!

Notes for THURZA SHERRILL:
David lived in the northwestern portion of Catawba Co NC near the Moore’s Ferry. He, his wife and several children and grandchildren are buried in the old Moore cemetery which is located at the end of a street in the Moore’s Ferry subdivision of Hickory. The cemetery is on top of a hill overlooking the Catawba River and Lake Hickory, and David’s home was probably located nearby.
.....David died before the 1840 census and Thursey was listed as age 50-60, along with one female 15-20. The 1850 Catawba Co NC census listed Thursday Settlemire, age 62, farming $1,800 worth of land. The Agricultural Schedule indicated that 80 acres of her farm were improved. She owned $150 worth of farm implements and $362 worth of livestock—4 horses, 3 milk cows, 7 other cattle, 9 sheep and 32 swine. She had produced 40 bushels of wheat, 30 bushels of rye, 500 bushels of corn, 10 bushels of oats, 10 pounds of tobacco, 14 pounds of wool, 20 bushels of peas and beans, 30 bushels of Irish potatoes, 10 bushels of sweet potatoes, 52 pounds of butter, 5 tons of hay, 5 pounds of flax (and one bushels of seed), 12 pounds of beeswax and honey, $25 worth of home-made products, and $95 worth of animals slaughtered.
.....Finally, the 1860 Catawba census gave her age as 72 and indicated that she owned land worth $12,000 and personal property worth $6,800. The Slave Schedule for the 1860 census showed that she owned six slaves: males aged 54, 36 and 23 and females aged 50, 23 and 19. The Agricultural Schedule showed that she had increased her improved acreage to 175 acres. Her livestock was basically the same as ten years earlier, and she produced 30 bushels of wheat, 10 bushels of rye, 400 bushels of corn, 25 pounds of tobacco, 15 pounds of wool, 3 bushels of peas and beans, 7 bushels of sweet potatoes, $20 worth of orchard products, 100 pounds of butter, 2 tons of hay, 5 pounds of flax (and one bushels of seed), 3 gallons of sorghum molasses, $15 worth of home-made products, and $100 worth of animals slaughtered.

"Died, March 2nd at his home on Oconalufta, Ute [Uriah] Sherrill. The deceased was born, raised and had always lived on the farm where he died. He would have been 80 years old in April, and was one of the oldest men in the county. He raised a family of five children, three of whom survive him. His property had been divided between his children before his death. Respected by those who knew him, beloved and revered by his descendants, he leaves an enviable memory. Like ripened grain, he was garnered by the silent reaper."

Goodspeed's Biographies of Marion County (Tennessee), A - B, published 1886
The Sherrill family is of Scotch-Irish descent, and the grandfather, George D. Sherrill, was one of the heroes of the Revolution, probably a member of General Marion's army. He had a sister, Catherine, who became the wife of Governor Sevier, the first governor of Tennessee. Uriah Sherrill was born in North Carolina, November 13, 1802, and died at Tracy City, April 28, 1871. His wife, who was born in Georgia, May 26, 1807, also died in Tracy City April 21, 1879. They were married June 8, 1840. The former came with his parents to this state, the family locating in Washington county, whence they removed to Coffee county, where the maternal grandfather of our subject remained until 1860. He then took up his residence in Tracy City and was the first bookkeeper for the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Company at that place. He married Lucinda Camden, a native of Virginia, and after her death wedded Miss Brixey, daughter of Thomas Brixey, a farmer and native of Georgia. Mr. Sherrill held membership in the Freewill Baptist Church and was a highly educated gentleman. His wife belonged to the "old school" Presbyterian Church.

Children of URIAH SHERRILL and ELIZABETH CAMDEN are:
.....i.....MARY E. SHERRILL, b. Abt. 1836.
.....ii.....CATHERINE J. SHERRILL, b. Abt. 1838.

Children of URIAH SHERRILL and ELIZABETH BRIXEY are:

Goodspeed's Biographies of Marion County (Tennessee), A - B, published 1886
.....Edward Everett Bull. "History is the essence of innumerable biographies," said Carlyle, and the record of a country or state is best told in the lives of its representative citizens. The efficient postmaster at Whitwell, E. E. Bull, has long been an important factor in the public life of Marion County and is a public-spirited citizen who has contributed largely to the material growth and progress of the community. He has also been an advocate of education and moral interests and cooperates in every movement that tends to advance the welfare of the county. In business, his reputation is unassailable, and in private life he commands the respect and regard of many friends.
.....Mr. Bull was born in Tracy City, Tenn., January 13, 1867, and is a son of James Everett and Susan (Sherrill) Bull. The father was born in Morristown, then in Grainger County, Tenn., December 9, 1831, and died March 31, 1896. His parents were Elisha and Sarah (Davis) Bull and his paternal ancestry came from England to the United States, locating near Baltimore, Md. Elisha Bull served his country in the war of 1812. He was a splendid mechanic and famous gun-maker, following that pursuit through the greater part of his life. From Maryland, he removed to eastern Tennessee and thence to Coffee County, this state, in 1858. There his death occurred in August 1873, at the age of eighty-six years. He first married Sarah Davis, and after her death, wedded Louisa Ladd, who is still living in Coffee county, and is one of the few who receive a pension on account of services rendered in the war of 1812.
.....James E. Bull attended school in Morristown, and under his father's direction, learned the trades of gunsmith and blacksmith. With the family he removed to Coffee County, and in 1866 went to Tracy City, where he held a position as blacksmith in the works of the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Company. During the Civil war, he was connected with the United States quartermaster's department under General Milroy, at Nashville and Tullahoma. He was also prominent in civil affairs and served as chairman of the county court of Grundy County for eight years and as one of its members for an additional seven years, while for four years he was deputy county court clerk. He held membership in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and was a prominent Mason, representing the lodge of Tracy City in the grand lodge. In politics, he was a Whig until the organization of the Republican Party, when he joined its ranks.
.....James E. Bull was married November 10, 1863 to Miss Susan Sherrill, daughter of Uriah and Eliza (Brixey) Sherrill. His wife belonged to the "old school" Presbyterian Church.
.....The father of our subject was also twice married and by Adaline Inman, his first wife, had one son, John H., who died in childhood. The children of his second marriage are: Emma Viola, who is living with her mother in Whitwell; Edward E.; Louella, who is with her mother; Ada, wife of W. C. Adams, a merchant of Whitwell; Rosella, who died in childhood; and one who died in infancy. The mother is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, South. She still survives her husband and in the community where se lives is held in the highest regard for her many estimable qualities.
.....E. E. Bull, of this review, attended school in his native city, and almost from the time he was tall enough to reach the top of the anvil, he has worked at the blacksmith's trade and through the entire period has been connected with the company in whose employee he remains at the present. In 1887, he came to Whitwell and took charge o their shops here. He is an expert mechanic and his ability is shown by the important position he now occupies. He is one of the most faithful and trusted employees of the company and has the respect of all who serve under him.
.....On the 3rd of October 1889, Mr. Bull married Miss Maggie J. Garrett, daughter of William Walton and Margaret (Johnson) Garrett, who removed from Robinson county to Davidson. Mrs. Bull was born November 28, 1867, and by her marriage has one son, John Garrett. Her brothers and sisters are: John B., who is grand secretary of the grand lodge of Masons for Tennessee; William W., a merchant of Birmingham, Ala.; Nettie, wife of Dr. Wosham, of Knoxville, Tenn., Mary, wife of B. F. Stratton, a prominent citizen of Nashville; Alvin, a lawyer who went to Texas; and Callie, wife of J. W. Norwood, who has charge of the store of the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Company at Whitwell. The father of this family died at the age of sixty-three years, and the mother at the age of forty-six.
.....Mr. and Mrs. Bull have a wide acquaintance in the community where they reside, and are held in the highest regard. They hold membership in the Methodist Episcopal church and Mr. Bull belongs to the Knights of Pythias fraternity and in 1895 represented the local lodge in the grand lodge. He is a Republican in politics, and in April 1897, was appointed postmaster of Whitwell, assuming the duties of the office on the 1st of June following. He was chairman of the Republican executive committee in 1896-7 and is a loyal and efficient worker in the party. As a citizen, he is true to every duty that devolves upon him, and in all the relations of public and private life, his reputation is unassailable. Honorable in business, faithful in friendship, of kindly manner and sterling worth, he is one of the popular residents of Marion County.

208. ELI P. SHERRILL (JACOB, JACOB, ADAM, WILLIAM, WILLIAM, ADAM SHERWELL) was born Abt. 1787 in Lincoln County, North Carolina, and died Abt. 1870 in Washington County, Arkansas. He married (1) CLARISSA ?. He married (2) NANCY HENSON. He married (3) NANCY PHEN January 13, 1814 in Knox County, Kentucky. He married (4) FERREBE RANSOM March 10, 1837 in Independence County, Arkansas.

Notes for ELI P. SHERRILL:
Probably buried in Jefferson County, Arkansas. Moved to Arkansas about 1819.

In 1810, Eli Sherrill (16-26) is living in Lincoln County, North Carolina, with a wife (16-26), and a male 16-26 (probably his brother Alfred).

In 1830, Eli Sherrill (40-50) is living in Ruddell Township, Independence County, Arkansas, with two boys 10-15 (Andrew J. and Franklin C.), three girls 5-10 (Mary, Sarah, and an unknown female who may not have survived), one girl 10-15 (Levina, although the birth date conflicts with Wanda Clark's estimate), one girl 15-20 (Elizabeth), and a wife 30-40 (Nancy Henson).

Eli Sherrill divorced a "Clarissa" (no last name given) in Arkansas on May 29, 1833. It is not clear who this is, although it is likely to be Nancy Henson.

In 1840, Eli Sherrill (50-60) is living in "Ruddle" Township, with one boy under 5 (John or Timothy), one boy 5-10 (John or Timothy), one girl 5-10 (presumably Mary J.), one girl 10-15 (unknown female), two girls 15-20 (presumably Mary E. and Sarah J.) , and a wife 40-50 (Fereby)

In 1850, Eli (63) is still living in Ruddell Township, with his wife "Ferrebe" (41) and 7 children: Mary J. (17), Timothy W. (15), Louisa (14), Emeline (9), Eli (7), Leaman (5), and William M. (3). Maybe the elder of the two Mary's in Eli's household was from his wife Ferebee Ransom's previous marriage, or a niece from one of Eli's brothers.

Some time after 1850, Eli and Fereby Sherrill moved to Jefferson County, where he purchased 40 acres of land on December 1, 1857. At this point, he was 70 years old.

In 1860, Eli (73) and Fereby (57) are living in Valley Rock, Yell County, Arkansas; their children Emeline (19), Eli P. (17), Lenon R. (15), and Wm. M. (13) are living with them. Neither Eli nor Fereby are listed in the 1870 census.

Child of ELI SHERRILL and CLARISSA ? is:
.....i.....ELIZABETH T. SHERRILL, b. Abt. 1811, Lincoln County, North Carolina; d. Aft. 1828; m. JOHN DAVIS, September 01, 1828, Independence County, Arkansas.

Child of ELI SHERRILL and NANCY HENSON is:
.....ii.....MARY J. SHERRILL, b. Abt. 1833, Independence County, Arkansas.

Children of ELI SHERRILL and NANCY PHEN are:
469.....iii.....LEVINA SHERRILL, b. Abt. 1813, Lincoln County, North Carolina.
470.....iv.....ANDREW JACKSON SHERRILL, b. May 11, 1816, North Carolina.
471.....v.....FRANKLIN C. SHERRILL, b. September 05, 1818, Lincoln County, North Carolina; d. April 23, 1883, Independence County, Arkansas.
.....vi.....MARY E. SHERRILL, b. Abt. 1821, Arkansas. In 1850, Mary Sherrill (29) is living with William Martin, widow of Mary's sister Levina, and her sister Sarah Sherrill in West Fork, Washington, Arkansas, USA. She is not listed in the 1860 census and has either married or died.
.....vii.....SARAH A. SHERRILL, b. Abt. 1823, Arkansas; m. ALFA K. CHANDLER, September 04, 1853, Washington County, Arkansas. In 1850, Sarah Sherrill (27) is living with William Martin, widow of Mary's sister Levina, and her sister Mary Sherrill in West Fork, Washington County, Arkansas.

Sarah Sherrill married Alfa K. Chandler on September 4, 1853 in Washington County (source: Wanda Clark, The Sherrill Saga).

In 1860, Alfred Chandler (35, Missouri-born), a stone mason, is living in Game Hill (?), Washington County with Sarah (35), Isabel (18), William (12), and George (4). Her age conflicts with the 1850 census.

Alfred Chandler is not listed in the 1870 Arkansas census; Sarah Chandlers live in Union, Dallas, and Montgomery counties.

Children of ELI SHERRILL and FERREBE RANSOM are:
.....viii......JOHN A. SHERRILL. Nothing is known for sure about John Sherrill. John A. Sherrill is listed as Eli Sherrill's son by Wanda Clark. He does not show up in Eli's household in 1850 or 1860, so he is likely to have moved out. Only one John Sherrill is listed in the 1850 Arkansas census -- a John P. Sherrill (31), with wife Louisa J. (25), and son William L. (7 months), lives in Monroe County. As this John Sherrill was Tennessee-born, it is not likely to be Eli's son. There are John Sherrills listed in 1860 (Monroe County) and 1870 (Conway County).
.....ix.....EMILY SHERRILL.
472.....x.....TIMOTHY W. SHERRILL, b. Abt. 1835, Independence County, Arkansas; d. January 14, 1920, Wideman, Izard County, Arkansas.
.....xi.....LOUISA A. SHERRILL, b. Abt. 1836, Independence County, Arkansas. Louisa Sherrill appears only in the 1850 census, living with her parents. She does not appear in the 1860 or 1870 Arkansas censuses and nothing further is known about her.
473.....xii.....MARGARET EMELINE SHERRILL, b. March 28, 1841, Independence County, Arkansas; d. March 28, 1902, Scott County, Arkansas.
.....xiii.....ELI P. SHERRILL, b. Abt. 1843, Arkansas.
In 1860, Eli P. Sherrill (17) is living with his parents in Yell County, Arkansas.
Unlike his Confederate-leaning family, he served with the Union Army, in the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry at Lewisburg, Conway County, Arkansas. His brother William Martin Sherrill also served in this unit. At his enlistment on June 12,1864, Eli listed an age of 20.
In 1880, an Eli Sherrill (31) is living with Catherine (26), Margaret (8), Jessee Eli (5), Mary E. (3) and 15-day old twins William and Richard in Lafayette, Scott County, Arkansas (just west of Yell County). The mother and the three older children were born in Texas. Eli does not show up in the 1870 Arkansas or Texas censuses, and it is not known if these were his children. Note the age discrepancy between the 1860 and 1880 censuses.
474.....xiv.....LEAMAN RICHARD SHERRILL, b. Abt. 1845.
475.....xv.....WILLIAM MARTIN SHERRILL, b. Abt. 1847, Independence County, Arkansas; d. Aft. 1900, Oklahoma.
.....xvi.....EAMILY L. SHERRILL, b. Abt. 1854.
Notes for EAMILY L. SHERRILL:
According to Wanda Clark (The Sherrill Saga), Eamily L. Sherrill, born about 1854, is Eli's daughter. However, she is not listed in his household in the 1860 census.

In 1880, Eamily (as "Emma Lin"), age 26 (with what appears to be an eight-year old son named Emma C.) is living with her older brother Franklin C. Sherrill in Ashley, Independence County, Arkansas. Nothing else is known about her.

213. ALFRED SHERRILL (JACOB, JACOB, ADAM, WILLIAM, WILLIAM, ADAM SHERWELL) was born August 08, 1792 in Lincoln County, North Carolina, and died February 21, 1864 in Independence County, Arkansas Territory. He married (1) MARGARET SHERRILL August 12, 1820 in Wilson County, Tennessee. She was born May 06, 1799 in Wilson County, Tennessee, and died February 05, 1855 in Independence County, Arkansas Territory. He married (2) HARRIET HEADSTREAM FULBRIGHT June 01, 1857 in Independence County, Arkansas. She was born Abt. 1810 in Hickmon County, Tennessee.

However, Wanda Clark wrote to me on 3/4/2011 to correct this:

"You first said Alfred Sherrill went back to Wilson County Tennessee and married Peggy Sherrill on August 12, 1820. Your manuscript( p.90 family213). Whoever wrote to you criticizing me and other Sherrills gave you undocumented, unproven and definitely wrong information on Alfred Sherrill and his wife Margaret “Peggy”nee Sherrill. She was the daughter of Alfred’s uncle Abel Sherrill. We have that marriage license. She was not a Headstream. Alfred Sherrill and Peggy Sherrill are buried in the former land owned by Alfred in Independence County Arkansas. A. T. Sherrill also a descendant of Abel Sherrill and Annie Thomas Sherrill. He was reared in Wilson County Tennessee and he and his wife traveled widely doing research. In his research, he contacted a grandson of Abel Sherrill and Annie Thomas Sherrill, who had inherited the Abel Sherrill bible. He recorded the info from the bible that showed Margaret “Peggy” Sherrill married Alfred Sherrill on the 12th od August the same date that the marriage license in Wilson County Tennessee showed that Alfred married Abel Sherrill’s daughter on the 12th of August 1820. The same date shown in the marriage license of Alfred to Peggy nee Sherrill. Alfred brought Margaret “Peggy” Sherrill back to Independence County with him and they lived on his large acreage which the limestone company now owns. The Sherrill cemetery in Independence County is on that land. You can refer to William A. Sherrill’s book that we did together."

And:

..."Margaret Peggy Sherrill was still alive in 1850 and married to Alfred Sherrill. At her death in 1855 Alfred Sherrill age 65 married Harriet Fulbright 2 years later, a widow neighbor who was 48 years old on June 1, 1857. She was the widow of William Fulbright 38, whom Harriet had married on the 16th of September 1847 under the name Harriet Headstream. Harriet Headstream Fulbright was a Hassell who had married a Headstream either just after or before they came to Independence County Arkansas. Alfred and Harriett Hassell Headstream Fulbright were up in years and were widow and widowers when they married. Alfred and Harriet had no children. Theirs was a marriage of old age. It did not last. In 1860 shortly after he married Harriet they separated. He lived next door to his son Hiram Sherrill, Alfred and Peggy’s son. In 1860 Harriet was living in the household with her daughter Martha Headstream Ford, her child by her first husband.
...When Alfred Sherrill and his wife Peggy nee Sherrill married in Wilson County Tennessee there were no Headstreams living in Wilson County. The Headstreams came from a different county in Tennessee than Wilson County and did not arrive in Independence County until 1830 or later. I have never found a Margaret Headstream in Alfred Sherrill’s line. In Harriet Hassell Headstream Fulbright’s line there is a small 9 month old child in 1860 named Margaret, far too young to be Alfred’s wife. Other than his late in life marriage to Harriet Hassell Headstream Fulbright, there is no other child or adult by the name of Headstream who married Alfred Sherrill."
Children of ALFRED SHERRILL and MARGARET SHERRILL are:

I think as perfect a type of true nobleman as the world ever produced."

The tract of land upon which was built the home of Archibald Sherrill was first patented to General Andrew Jackson on March 7, 1796, by the State of North Carolina and by him was sold to Archibald Sherrill, 22 September 1815 and was later owned by Samuel Wilson Sherrill, Archibald's oldest son.

Notes for JACOB SHERRILL:
.....He went to Misssouri and settled on Bear Creek, Polk Co., MO., and when the county was divided, found himself in Dade County. In 1849, with his brother Murray, and brother-in-law, John Baker, crossed the plains to California and after one year's residency, returned to New Orleans by steamer, via Panama(?). In 1858 Jacob again went to CA. taking with him a band of cattle. He came back to Missouri in September 1857.
.....Jacob Sherrill went to Montana with his son-in-law, John Hartley, who married Sarah Sherrill. A younger daughter Matilda married Josiah H. Groff, and had crossed the plains the previous year, going first to Boise City, Idaho and later to Oregon. The Groff's were parents of H. Clay Groff, Albert Sidney, Forrest and Verina Groff who married Jack Campbell.
.....Jacob Sherrill was married to Joanna Robinson and were the parents of at least 11 children. Three sons were killed during the Civil War: Nathaniel Houston (Bud) Sherrill, killed near Stockton, MO.; Green Lafayette Sherrill, killed in Arkansas; and Benjamin Franklin Sherrill, killed near Stockton, MO.
Jacob and Joanna had a daughter Jackie Angeline Sherrill who married Sumeril Dennis Brown (my great-great uncle) Jackie was b. 16 Feb.1836 and records indicate near Lick Creek, TN.; m. 20 Sept. 1853 probably in Cedar Co., MO., and d. 26 June 1880; buried in the Weir Cemetery, near Greenfield, Dade Co., MO. Her husband and family then left MO., going to be with Sherrill families in Ravalli Co., MT. They were the parents of 8 children - 2 sons dying in infancy and also buried in Weir Cemetery. Another son Robert, was shot and killed along the way in Wyoming.
.....This left 5 girls surviving to adulthood and each marrying in MT. Martha A. m. Gardner Gordon Lockwood; Laura A. m. Benjamin Mathews; Matilda Jane m. John D. Forsyth; Margaret A. m. Albert S. Groff (son of Josiah H. Groff and Matilda Caroline Sherrill a sister to Jackie), and Mary A. m. John Marion Burch. I have located numerous relatives of the above, but am trying to locate some of the lost branches. Anything you might have would be helpful.

Notes for JOSEPHUS SHERRILL:
REV. CEPH SHERRILL PASSES IN CALIFORNIA.
.....Rev. Josephus Sherrill, 69, died at his home in Palms, Calif. a few weeks ago. He leaves his widow, one daughter and four sons. Two of these are in service, stationed in Colorado.. Ceph was the youngest son of Nelson and Camilla Holdsclaw Sherrill. He was born in "Sherrilltown", eastern Catawba, September 1874. His brother Elam died in 1939, but he is survived by his step-mother, Mrs. Curtis Beatty; three half brothers, William W., Statesville, Chal, Mooresville, and Silas, Iredell county.
.....Ceph joined Rehobeth church in his youth on profession. While attending Catawba College (1891-1892) he received whart some may call a "second blessing" in a Y.M.C.A. meeting conducted by L.A. Coulter, State Secretary Y.M.C.A. He was my roommate that year at Catawba. In 1894 he went to California, where he had some cousins. There he joined the United Bretheren and was lisenced to preach a few years later.
.....He was a faithful pastor till four years ago, when he had to retire on acount of his health. He made three or four visits to his old home section, spending most of his vacations in revival meetings. He preached at Sherrill's Ford high school and several churches in Rock Spring and Lowesville circuits. Scores of people were saved at these meetings, many of them his kindred and former neighbors. He was one of the best preachers I ever heard. in a revival. Not such a big preacher, but his messages touched the unsaved and brought them to repentance. He was one of my pupils at Oak Institute, Mooresville, in 1892, and it is my pleasure to bear testimony to his loyal devotion to his savior. He was confined to his room eight weeks before his departure.
.....His last trip to his native state was in 1937 or 38 when he made an address at the Sherrill Reunion at Sherrill's Ford.
Children of JOHN SHERRILL and MARY GILLELAND are:
