THE LOVETT FAMILY OF MASSACHUSETTS AND INDIANA

by Jane A. Leavell

"Lovett" is a County Kerry name in Ireland from "Lyvet," or French origin, meaning "wolf cub." Thanks to Anneliese Ullrich's research, we now know that Christopher Lovett, who ended up in Indiana, had a brother in Massachusetts who also had American descendants.

GENERATION NO. 1.

1. ? LOVETT . These parents are as yet unknown.

? Lovett had the following children:
2. i. JOHN LOVETT was born about 1806 in Ireland. He married MARY QUINN.
3. ii. CHRISTOPHER LOVETT was born between 1810-1813 in Ireland. He died on 20 Jul 1893 in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, USA.

GENERATION NO. 2.

2. JOHN LOVETT (?)was born about 1806 in Ireland. He married MARY QUINN. Notes for John Lovett:

Mary Lovett, female, born 3 Nov 1848 in Worcester, Massachusetts to John Lovett and Margaret Lovett (Ancestry.com. Massachusetts, Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2011 has it registered July 19, 1850, with the date of 3 November, and arbitrarily assigns the year of 1849, but maybe the family waited to register the birth?)

Any connection? The Scannells appear to be stepchildren, since Dennis's death record says his parents were Michael and Margaret Scannell:

OF JAMES LOVETT, a native of Maryland, aged 21 years, who was left by his father, John Lovett, in Vernon, Indiana, when only seven years old, under the care of his uncle, Christopher Lovett, who wrote to his father about 7 years ago, saying he had left him and he did not know where he went. Since then his father and brothers (who have been residents of Worcester, Massachusetts, 11 years) have searched for him in vain, and are most anxious to hear from him. Address John Lovett, 2 Canal street, Worcester, Massachusetts.

John Lovett and Mary Quinn had the following children:
4….i… BARTHOLOMEW LOVETT was born about 1829 in Ireland. He died on 25 Oct 1902 in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts, USA
5….ii…CHRISTOPHER LOVETT was born in Nov 1831 in Ireland. He died on 04 Aug 1901 in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts, USA.
6.…iii…JAMES LOVETT was born about 1838 in Maryland, USA. In the 1850 census with his uncle Christopher Lovett, he's 12, born Pennsylvania.

3. CHRISTOPHER LOVETT was born Bet. 1810 - 1813 in Ireland, and died August 22, 1884 in North Vernon, Jennings County, Indiana. He married ANN MELVIN. She was born Abt. 1820 in County Down, Ireland.

May (Parker) Zimmerer suggests he came from County Cork. He was Catholic. Family legend says his father was the caretaker on the estate of wealthy Presbyterians named Melvin, and Christopher fell in love with Ann, daughter of Agusta Melvin. Marriage being forbidden, they eloped to England, where he worked in the shipyards. Later they came to America, with one daughter--Mary, called "Mollie"--being born at sea on 23 March 1845.

There are several big problems with this pretty tale. One is that EARLY LANDOWNERS OF JENNINGS COUNTY, page 57, lists Christopher Lovett as buying land there 4 August 1837! Another is that the Melvins (see the family history on this website) came from County Down, not County Cork, to Pennsylvania, and the father of Ann was John--not Agusta--and he died broke, willing Ann anything he might inherit from his siblings in Pennsylvania! Finally, there's a death records for a C. Lovett in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, where the family ended up, so I'm going with that death death, July 20, 1893.

JENNINGS COUNTY COURT RECORDS for 1818-1850, Probate Order Book 4, page 245, carried Christopher's naturalization. Mary Hariden and William E. Wagner testified in his behalf, and be became a citizen 12 November 1845. In 1880, he was in Cicero Township, Tipton County, Indiana. He died in North Vernon, Jennings County, Indiana, 22 August 1884.

His wife Ann Melvin was born about 1820 in County Down, Ireland; no death date is known yet.

A Henry Lovett, age 87, was living at 21 Birch Avenue, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana when he died 20 July 1983 and was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery Lot 342, Section D, with the Henry Lovett born ca. 1865. Relative: William Lovett. Could this older Henry be a brother of Christopher Lovett?

The Lovetts are said to have owned a liquor store or tavern somewhere in Indianapolis.

May Parker Zimmerer has notes listing most of the children of Christopher Lovett as "heirs of Henry Lovette to Samuel Lovett property on 625 Birch Ave., Indpls., IN, received for record 26th day of August 1893, deeded." She also suggested Henry died 21 September 1901.

6. MARY LOVETT (CHRISTOPHER) was born March 28, 1846 in Jennings County, Indiana, and died July 14, 1923 in Tipton County, Indiana. She had big, lovely blue eyes. She married DANIEL CONLEY February 17, 1863 in Mount Vernon, Jennings County, Indiana, son of MICHAEL CONNELLY and ELLEN KILLELAH. He was born October 24, 1835 in Prince George Co., Maryland, and died April 21, 1924 in Tipton County, Indiana. See the CONNELLY genealogy on this website for descendants.

More About MARY LOVETT:
Baptism: April 02, 1845, Baptized St Ann's North Vernon, IN Sponsors: John McManus & Helen Buckley Thomas Fitzgibbons and his wife Bridget were Mary Lovett's Godparents

Burial: July 16, 1923, St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Tipton, Tipton Co. IN

Angela Brady Wheatley always wanted to be just like "Grandma Conley", except for the way that whenever Mary Lovett Conley went walking she was just bound to break a bone. Mary was known to everyone in Tipton as the local midwife. One Christmas Day she fell on the railroad tracks. The first Mass was at five a.m. and she liked to go to two or three Masses on Christmas Day. The tracks were frosty and slick. She broke her lower arm and her elbow, and hit her forehead on the ties, grinding cinders into the wound. Long after the wound healed she kept complaining that there was something in her head--cinders, maybe. They took her to doctors, who said it was just her imagination, but when she went to Indianapolis doctors they told her it was inoperable brain cancer. As it affected her brain she went completely "off," and they had to hire someone to watch her and give her medications. Isabelle (Conley) Brady thought it was too unpleasant for the children to see her in that condition, but they used to sneak up, lift the corner of the drape, and peek in at her. Her death certificate blames "Carcinoma Nares," which is cancer of the nostril or nose.

The Tipton Daily Tribune for Thursday evening, 19 July 1923, on page 8, had:

GOOD WOMAN GONE
MRS. DANIEL CONLEY DIED HERE LAST NIGHT
Had Been a Resident of the County Since 1880

.....The death of Mrs. Mary Conley, wife of Daniel Conley, occurred last night at 9:40 o'clock at the family home, 515 North Independence Street. Death had been expected for some time as she was very critically ill and her condition for the past few days had been such that recovery was not expected. She had been ill for the past two months with asthma complications following an attack of the flu.
....The deceased was 77 years of age March 28 of this year, and she had been a resident of this county since 1880 and of this city since 1903.
....She was born in Jennings county, her parents being Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Lovett, of Irish lineage. She was one of thirteen children, of whom four survive, they being Mrs. Will Horn of Tipton, Mrs. Michael Egan, Mrs. T. E. Deering, and Mrs. George Unversaw, all of Indianapolis.
....She was married to Daniel Conley, who survives, February 17, 1863, in Jennings county and they began housekeeping there where her husband was in the lumber and milling business. In 1880 Mr. Conley bought a farm of 160 acres north of this city and they moved to Tipton county. In 1903 they moved to this city. Last February they passed their 60th wedding anniversary.
....Of the six children born to Mr. and Mrs. Conley, three are living: Mrs. B.B. Brady and Thomas Conley of Tipton, and Mrs. C. N. Parker, of Indianapolis. There are also twelve grandchildren surviving and two great grandchildren.
....Mrs. Conley was a devout member of St. John's Catholic church and a woman who impressed everyone with her goodness of heart and her kindly deeds and ministrations to neighbors and friends, and she will be missed in the community.

The Tipton Daily Tribune for Friday evening had a short notice that the funeral would be Saturday morning with interment in the Catholic cemetery adjoining Fairview.
