The following are from Mortgage and Deed records during the time Jonas and Mary lived in Ford City, Ford Co. KS.
They left Ohio in about 1878. Another rumor is that their house was actually burned by a neighbor who owed them money. Jonas J. owned a large tobacco farm in Ohio were he raised and cured tobacco. During the Civil War the confederate army burned his 14 room house, and took horses and cattle except one cow hidden in the bushes. He put the family in a covered wagon and headed west. It is approximately 150' north of the homestead (which is in very bad condition and ready to collapse). Richard was a Captain in the War of 1812, entitling him to a land grant, which he chose in Minerva. He built his house in about 1820. His only child, Alfred building his home about 1000 yards south of Richard's homestead. Richard was in the military with then Capt David Chiles, later becoming a general along with Richard in the Ky Militia. Alfred married David's daughter, Elizabeth.

Observations: This letter was written 2 years before Jonas died and 3 years before Mary died.
It appears that Mary moved to Oklahoma Territory in 1895 after Jonas died and lived with her sons. She must have died shortly thereafter. She is buried in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery near Lamont.
... "R.K. Baird was 85, when in 1960 he recalled his experiences homesteading in the Cherokee Outlet. The first funeral was for Mrs. Danford. Findlay Porter and I drove the Danford team to Lamont, Ok. to get lumber for the coffin of pine boards. We had to ford the Salt Fork River-there were no bridges. Fortunately, the river was low at this time of the year, but the quick sand was still there.
...To bolster our courage we visited a watermelon patch on the north side before crossing over. The patch was owned by Mr. Windfield. However, we decided to call him "Mr. Windfall" because of the melon contribution.
...The cost of the lumber for the coffin was about $1.25. The women got the water hot, and Mr. Race steamed the wood and shaped the casket. The women folk lined it with calico and covered the outside with lamp blacking. The funeral was held in the schoolhouse. Wild prairie flowers adorned the coffin. The minister's name was John Snavley, a Quaker."

Obituary
.....Elizabeth, the daughter of Hiram and Rachel Danford, was born March 6, 1832, died March 7th 1909. She united in marriage with Wm. Lashley, September 2, 1852. To this union eleven children were born, of whom ten survive. Rachel R. Ballas of Jackson Ridge, Ohio; George W., of Batesville; Leroy T. of Kennonsburg; Margaret J. Ryan of Pleasant City; Harriet F. Botkins of Sherman, W. Va.; Van A., Samuel P., of Buffalo Or; Isaac J., Lydia C., and John R., at home. One died in infancy. She is also survived by 36 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. The aged father still survives with the children, and is very feeble and is waiting for the hour to come when he can meet her on the other shore.
.....She united with the M.E. church about 1850 and always remained a true follower of her Savior and always saw the bright side of everything and to those in trouble she gave a helping hand and was ready to do her part.
.....She was a dutiful wife and a loving mother and was a woman of excellent (unreadable), honest, kind-hearted and generous to a fault. She bore her sufferings without a murmur. She had been an invalid for over five years and never seemed to get discouraged and always said when the Lord was ready to take her home she was ready. She was a good neighbor loved by all who knew her. Her presence will be greatly missed in the community in which she lived.

Abraham died at age 86yr., 3mo., 23 days. He owned a grocery store near Mt. Zion, Ohio.
The first store in the Buffalo Township community of Mt. Zion was erected when that township was still part of Guernsey County. J. C. "Jake" Secrest operated the store in the 1920's, selling it late in that decade to Abraham Groves. Groves built a new store building a few years later, but business declined during the 1930's, and he closed the store about 1940. The Lutheran Church at Mt. Zion remains active today.
Golden Wedding of The Groves' Next Sunday
Anniversary To Be Fittingly Celebrated In An All Day Affair At Family Home
...On Sunday, Oct 4, friends and relatives will gather at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Abe Groves, Mt. Zion, in observance and honor of their golden wedding anniversary, two hearts that beat as one and two souls with but a single thought for the past fifty years since they embarked together on the ship of bliss across the sea of matrimony. And now safely anchored on the shores of contentment and happiness, they will gather 'round them next Sunday the children and many friends they have accumulated on their voyage of fifty years, a group that will extend to them the best wishes of the community wherein they live and have prospered.
...Mr. and Mrs. Groves were married just fifty years ago, October 5, 1886, at the home of J. B. Clark, Ava. Rev. W. H. Piggot of Caldwell, now deceased, officiated at the wedding. Rev. Piggot's widow is still living in Caldwell on Lewis street and she remembers full well the ceremony of these many years ago.
...The bride of fifty years ago was formerly Miss Margaret Steele, daughter of Andrew Jackson and Martha Contel Steele. He was the son of Jonas and Maria Phillips Groves. Both grew to womanhood and manhood in the Cumberland community.
...Elaborate preparations are being made for the celebration on Sunday morning and afternoon. The climax will be reached when Mr. and Mrs. Groves re-exchange the marriage vows. a program will be given and the Mt. Zion band, under the direction of Russell Osborne, will furnish the music throughout the entire day.
...Mr. and Mrs. Groves are entertaining with an "open house" and any are invited to share with them in their achievement of fifty years. They are asking that you bring well filled baskets and own service in an old time family dinner.
...It is an honor will worth while and so it shall be on Sunday, when Mr. and Mrs. Groves again plight their betrothal.

Brooks was his first wife and she died about 1902. Jefferson then married Nettie Dicus Spivey in 1909 and they had two daughters. Sometime between Sarah's death and his subsequent marriage in 1909, he fathered a male child. The mother was Julie Forkum. Although they never married, the son John Hobert Wilson took his father's last name and he was raised by his mother. He died April 6, 1924 in Haydenburg, Jackson, Tennessee, USA.

Notes for ELIAS EMMANUEL KENNEDY:
407. LEANDER M. LOWRANCE (ALEXANDER EVELAND, ISAAC TANNER, ELIZABETH BRIDGES, MARGARET PERKINS, ELISHA, RICHARD, ROBERT) was born November 25, 1829 in Alexander County, North Carolina, and died September 09, 1910 in Alexander County, North Carolina. He married CLEMENTINE MURCHINSON.
Elias arrived in Batesville, Ar. after a long train ride from Stoney Point, Nc. He was on his way to Texas to locate a new home for his family. He stopped in batesville on his way through to visit his half brother, John Barker, who lived in Wolf Bayou. The weather was very cold and the ground covered with ice. He tried to rent a horse but the livery man would not rent him a horse because of the weather conditions. So he drove spikes in his shoes and walked. He reached his half-brothers house in time for supper. After a few days of visiting he found a place he liked a short distance from his half-brothers place so he settled his family there. In 1902 Elias, Martha and 1 daughter moved to Wolf Bayou. They purchased the land on 31 Oct 1903. (w 1/2 nw sec 19) in Wolf Bayou, Ar. He had a corn grist mill operated by a one cylinder gasoline engine witha a large balance wheel. It didn't take much power to turn the grist mill once it got started. Elias was also a carpenter and helped in building many of the buildings at Heber Springs between 1907-1908. This was during the boom of the old M&A Railroad. He was converted and joined the Oak Grove Methodist Church in September 1912. He was a member of the Wolf Bayou Masonic Lodge where he was Worshipful Master. He was also a member of the ODD Fellows. His principles came straight out of the bible. He had the courage of Jeremiah and was plain spoken and never wavered in his beliefs. After the death of his wife Martha his daughter Elsie Ruble and her husband Rev. L. R. Ruble moved near him. He died at 6:30 pm on November 19th in his home in Wolf Bayou at the age of 83. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Burnell Stevens, pastor of Oak Grove Methodist Church, and W. A. Lindsey, an old friend of many years.

Martha, nicknamed Patsy, Belcher was the first wife of Absalom Pennington Free. He stole her from a wagon train and married her. They had two little boys, Andrew and John Belcher Free. Patsy died shortly after the birth of John, never having reached her 20th birthday. Several years later, Absalom married Elizabeth (Betsy) Strait. It wasn't until he was 60 years old that he married Annie who was 20. His last child, Wenlock, was born when Absalom was 73 years old.
Presumably Elizabeth Jane was previously married, as she had 7 children, born in England, all surnamed Whitehead.

In Reply to: Nancy Stubblefield and John Henry Perkins by Sonya Perkins Lynch of 1405
I see this is a very old thread, however, I hope some of you are still monitoring it.
I have a Nancy Stubblefield b: abt 1810, d/o of Jeremiah, but she married a Joseph Stoker abt 1830. As far as I know she was only married once. I just came across an article from History of Bond Co., I think. It says "The United Baptist Church was first organized Dec. 30, 1869. The first members were E.P. Mathews, Mary J. Mathews,W.C. Perkins, John H. Perkins, Martha A. Perkins, Amanda Perkins, Amanda Stubblefield, Anna Perkins and Catharine Shipby." Amanda Stubblefield was my gr gr grandmother and the daughter-in-law of Jeremiah. I don't know if this is of any help. I am interested in Thomas Stubblefield. I have not seen him in Bond Co.IL
JOHN PERKINS (1801-1867) Came to St. Clair county with his father, Joshua Perkins, sometime previous to 1818, and to this area about 1836, purchasing land in section 10 that same year. John married first Nancy Stubblefield (1807-1849), And they were the parents of 16 known children. He was married second to Edna Durham (1826-1883) and had 6 more children. He and his First wife were buried at the Durham Cemetery; His second wife was buried at the Maxey Cemetery. His Children: Clark, Polly, John Henry, Elizabeth A. Smith, Ephraim, William Carroll, daughter name unknown died young, Rebecca, James M. Cynthia, Joshua J, and twin to Thomas V. nancy L and Twin to Louise, Onay M., Jesse, Martha Jane Minor, James W. Sarah J. Ketring, Samuel F. Eva Rench Hudson and Albert.
Family lore states that the crossed over the Mississippi in the dead of winter into Illinois from Missouri. That is a clue IM sure....I haven't found a marriage record other than a note from an old family bible. He married second Edna Durham in August 4 of 1850. Nancy died the year earlier in childbirth with their 15th known child.
The family lore about this John Henry is that there were still Indians in Bond Co. area and John never turned away anyone. He fed Indians and others alike at his table and was quite a fellow. John Henry also took in any children that needed a home also. I decend from his and Nancy's son Ephriam and one of the children that he took in Anna Mitilda Creswick I'll get more into that later.

REV. REV. WILLIAM JOHN2 CRESWICK (WILLIAM1) was born April 04, 1815 in Croydon, Surrey England, and died November 06, 1895 in Pleasant Mound Illinois. He married POLLY ANNA SLYE November 06, 1845 in West Lavington England, daughter of SLY and ELIZABETH. She was born 1817 in Warminster, Wiltshire England, and died in Clavering Essex England. His occupation was that of a traveling preacher. At one point. Rev. Creswick left his children at the Perkins house hold. That of John Henry Perkins and Edna Durham. This is most likely how Anna and Ephriam got together.
Notes for ANNA MATILDA CRESWICK:
Anna came to Pleasant Mound about 1852. She first was located in Kentucky and then on to Bond County, Illinois. She is listed in the 1860 census as living in the home of John Henry Perkins and Edna Durham Perkins. John was known to take in anyone who needed a place to live. This may have been how she came to know Ephriam and married him.
.....Annie as she was known was musically inclined. In the possession of Robin Perkins Briggs is an organ still in beautiful condition that was owned by Annie. Janice Kay Perkins of Smithboro is in possession of Annie's cook book. In this cook book there is a recipe for a salve for a horses eye! It's in her own hand and badly worn.
..... Annie and Ephriam were married by John Crouch MG.
.....Mrs. Annie Creswick Perkins, born 7 June 1847 in Clavering Essex Co. England died 15 November 1919 at Pleasant Mound in Bond County Married 28 Feb. 1861 in Bond County to Ephriam Perkins who died 23 October 1887.
.....She had two sons and two daughters proceed her in death. She is survived by 4 sons. John W. Perkins of Terre Hute Indiana, George E. Oscar E. and Bertrand all of Pleasant Mound and one daughter Rosa Belle Edwards of North Dakota.
