MISCELLANEOUS AFRICAN-AMERICAN LEAVELL DATA

gathered by Jane A. Leavell

NOTE: Some of the Leavells on the MISCELLANEOUS LEAVELL DATA pages may also be African-American, we just haven't verified it yet. Also, much data came from the free posting of the 1880 census at www.familysearch.com--be sure to check there, because it's too big for me to pull all the data out myself.

If you have data I haven't stumbled across yet, please feel free to share it!

BALM LEAVELL
Balm Leavell was born 08 Jul 1910 and died Oct 1968.
.....Dorothy Gonder was born on October 23, 1944, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, the second surviving child of Sallie and Blane Gonder. In 1961 Gonder left school to take a job as office manager for the Chicago Crusader, a black newspaper founded and published by Balm L. Leavell, Jr. in 1940. Balm Leavell established another newspaper, the Gary (Indiana) Crusader, the same year he hired Gonder. The relationship between Gonder and Leavell quickly became personal as well as professional, and the pair got married shortly after they began working together. Dorothy served as office manager at the Chicago paper until 1964, when she was promoted to the position of business manager. As business manager, Leavell functioned as her husband's primary aide, enabling her to absorb all the details involved in the day-to-day operation of a newspaper. Meanwhile, the busy couple found time to have two children, Antonio and Genice Leavell. The Leavells also raised a niece and a nephew, Sharon and Leonard Gonder, as part of their household.
.....When Balm Leavell died in 1968, Dorothy Leavell took over as owner and publisher of both the Chicago and Gary Crusader newspapers. She also assumed editorial leadership of both papers. Over time, Leavell became increasingly active in the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), the trade organization that represents more than 200 African American newspapers.

ELIZABETH LEAVELL
Rev. Harry Brown, 91, championed civil rights in a 75-year ministry
Taught blacks assertiveness on tours
BY REBECCA GOODMAN | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER
.The Rev. Harry Brown, pastor emeritus of Bethel Baptist Church in Walnut Hills, died Feb. 1.
.....The Rev. Mr. Brown, 91, preached more than 6,000 sermons over a 75-year ministry. As pastor of Bethel from 1943 until 1980, he expanded the congregation, renovated the church, and operated an educational travel service when blacks struggled to end segregation. He took groups of African-Americans on tours around the country, teaching them to assert their rights.
.....The Rev. Mr. Brown was born to Elizabeth Leavell and Jasper Brown on Sept. 8, 1914, in Warsaw in Gallatin County. Baptized when he was 9 in the Ohio River on a warm July day, he received his call to the ministry when he was 16. He delivered his first sermon at Mount Zion Baptist Church on Jan. 31, 1931.
.....He moved to Cincinnati in 1936 and enrolled at East Night High School and the Cincinnati Theological Seminary. He later attended the University of Cincinnati, paying tuition by working as a janitor, a butler and, finally, in the foundry at the Cincinnati Milling Machine Co. He later commuted to Simmons Theological Seminary in Louisville, receiving a bachelor of divinity degree in 1948, a bachelor of theology degree in 1949, and a master's degree in theology in 1950.
.....The Rev. Mr. Brown joined Bethel Baptist Church in 1938 as associate minister. He became acting pastor in 1943 and permanent pastor in 1944. Focusing on youth, he started black Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops and a drum and bugle corps that competed nationally. He also sponsored a uniformed basketball team that competed in the South and Midwest.
.....In 1952, he took a group of Bethel youths and their parents to visit the Howard University campus in Washington, D.C.
.....The following year he led a group to California. That was the beginning of the pastor's vacation tour. In the early days of the modern civil rights movement, the Rev. Mr. Brown took his parishioners - most of whom had never traveled - to restaurants and hotels and taught them how to assert their rights. The tour was so popular he founded Brown's Tour and Travel Service, which provided escorted tours to more than 10,000 blacks. In 1955, he attended the World Baptist Congress in London, and visited the Holy Land. He retired after suffering a stroke in the pulpit in 1980. As pastor emeritus, he served as interim pastor in 1994 and helped install a permanent pastor. He delivered sermons until 2001.
.....His wife of 64 years, Mary Banks Brown, died in 2003.
.....Survivors include his son, Ronald B. Brown of San Francisco; and a brother, William Brown of Warsaw.
.....Visitation is 9-11 a.m. today followed by the funeral at Bethel Baptist Church, 2712 Alms Place. Entombment will be at Spring Grove Cemetery.

EUGENE LEAVELL
THE COSHOCTON TRIBUNE, Wednesday, Sept. 28, 1927
Wife Says Mate Beat Her; Case Aired in Court
...Eugene Leavell, colored, was in Mayor H. B. Heaton's court today to answer charges of drinking and abusing his wife, Margaret Leavell.
...Mrs. Leavell claims her husband came home from work Tuesday night and at once proceeded to give her a beating. She ran from the house and to the home of a neighbor. According to her own words, she was "bleeding like a hog."
...Later Mrs. Leavell went to the home of her parents, where she says she is staying now. Leavell, his wife declares, squanders in gambling and fails to pay his bills.
...All that Mrs. Leavell charged, her husband denied. The wife's mother, Mrs. Thomas Stewart, was to be called in the afternoon to give her opinion, if any, as to whether or not Leavell's treatment of his wife has been proper.
...The Leavells live on North Sixth st.

THE COSHOCTON TRIBUNE, Thursday, Sept. 29, 1927
Differences of Colored Couple Are Ironed Out
...The domestic difficulties of Eugene and Margaret Leavell, colored couple living on North Sixth st. were apparently all ironed out in police court Wednesday afternoon, and the irate Mrs. Leavell, who declared Wednesday morning she would never return to her husband, was back to live with him, promising police "to be good."
...Contrary to Mrs. Leavell's assercion yesterday morning that her mother, Mrs. Thomas Stewart, would substantiate her charges against her husband, Mrs. Stewart took the part of her son-in-law when she was called into mayor's court in the afternoon.
...When Mrs. Leavell showed a determination to have her say, despite an injunction from Mayor Heaton, she was put in the jail and remained there until late in the evening. In the jail, with plenty of time to think matters over, Mrs. Leavell experienced a change of heart and, when she left, said her husband was not as bad as she had painted him.
...On filing charges of drunkeness and abuse Mrs. Leavell said her husband had given her a beating on returning home from work Tuesday night.

...Beatrice (Gladys) Leavell began this life on Feb. 10, 1910, in Swansea, South Wales, Great Britain.
...She was the daughter of Mary Coleman and Peter Dominguez. As an infant, she was adopted by Elizabeth and George Thomas and raised as Gladys Mae Thomas in a small mining village in Maesteg, South Wales.
...Gladys came to Richmond, Ind., as a war bride in 1946. She married the love of her life, James Daniel Leavell, in 1948, gave birth to a daughter, Georgina, and adopted a son, James Daniel Jr. She was a loving wife and mother until she departed this life. Up to the end her thoughts were always "to be there for my family."
...Gladys joined Bethel AME Church in 1951. Her love and devotion to God grew over time and was obvious to all who came in contact with her. God truly smiled on her and rewarded her long life with many blessings and many happy memories.

...She leaves to cherish her precious memory her daughter, Georgina Leavell; son, James (Jamie) Leavell; a host of nieces and nephews and friends.
...Beatrice Leavell departed this life on Nov. 30, 2004, at the age of 94 years.

JOSEPHINE LEAVELL
http://www.valleyvoicenewspaper.com/valleyvoicearchive/august72002.htm
.....The Colonel (1842-1914) is the most famous of the Allensworth founders, with an amazing list of accomplishments on his resume. An escaped slave, he fought with the Union Army during the civil war. During his military career, he also served in the Spanish American War, as well as the Philippine Liberation. During his free years, he and his brother owned and operated some lucrative St. Louis restaurants. Allen Allensworth was also free to pursue a formal education in theology and education.
.....By 1877, Allen Allensworth had become a minister, and he had married Josephine Leavell, a schoolteacher and pianist. In 1886, he was offered the prestigious position of chaplain in the 24th Army infantry of the U.S. colored troops. He retired to Los Angeles in 1906 with the highest rank for a black officer (Lieutenant and Colonel) and the highest rank achieved by any Army chaplain of the period. In his retirement, he dedicated his life to improving the social status of African-Americans through education and economics at Allensworth.
.....The women of Allensworth were no less involved than the CCHPA founders in establishing the town. The Colonel's wife, Josephine Leavell Allensworth, was the main impetus for the creation of a town library.

Allensworth, Josephine - 1855-1939, born in Trenton, KY. Mrs. Allensworth was the wife of Allen Allensworth; her maiden name was Leavell. She taught in the common schools and was an accomplished pianist. She helped develop the Progressive Women's Improvement Association, which provided books to the community of Allensworth in California; later the organization provided a playground. She also donated the land for the Dickinson Memorial Library, which was built in the town of Allensworth in 1913. For more see African American Women: a biographical dictionary by D. C. ...The trouble started on Route 31, near Wolf, when Miss Leavell reportedly became hysterical during a family argument and attacked members of the party. Police said the girl bit her mother, Mrs. Edith Taylor, an uncle and a nephew on the legs and kicked and scratched three other passengers in the car.

The girl's relatives arrived at the Newcomerstown hospital later and said they would take her to Cochocton hospital. No charges were filed by Deputy McIntosh. Thomas J. Long, Canton, driver of the Negroes' car, said he and his friends were bound for Cincinnati when the altercation started.

RAFE LEAVELL

Death AT 115
Former Trigg County Negro Dies In Louisville Journey To City Causes Death of Rafe Leavell
…..Almost every man, woman and child of Trigg county knew Rafe Leavell. For many years past he had resided at Trigg Furnace on the Hillman plantation. On account of feeble health he was taken to Louisville some weeks ago to reside with his daughter, and last Friday he passed away in that city. In speaking of his death, together with a number of other references to his life, the following notice is clipped from a Louisville paper:
….."The Yankee win, but I will be a rebel until I die." These words, uttered at the close of the civil war by "Uncle Rafe" Leavell have found absolute fulfillment. "Uncle Rafe" a former slave, died a "rebel" last Friday night at the age of 115, after celebrating a birthday on the Monday preceding. He was buried Sunday. The old Negroes of the city attended the funeral in a body.
…..Born in 1797 in Christian county, Kentucky. "Uncle Rafe" lived through four wars, that of 1812, the Mexican conflict, the civil war, and the late Spanish-American struggle. Had he wished, he might have voted for 13 presidents, but he argued: "This is the white man's country. Let him make and unmake presidents. The negro's place is humble. Let him keep it." This was the abiding philosophy of the faithful old darkey throughout his long life's span. Even on the death bed it persisted.
…..When hostilities broke out between the north and the south "Uncle Rafe" was a slave on the plantation of Marshall Leavell of Christian county. He went to war with his master. Early in the conflict a Yankee bayonet pierced Leavell's breast. The old Negro promptly avenged his master's death by killing the Uniform soldier on the spot. He was taken prisoner. The fight occurred during a raid on Camp Coleman, Ky.
…..Against his will "Uncle Rafe" was forced to serve as a teamster for the Eighty-third Illinois infantry. At the close of the war he returned to Kentucky and located in Lyon county.
….."Uncle Rafe, came to Louisville from Cadiz, Ky., some time ago to visit his daughter. He never recovered from the effect of the railroad journey. He leaves an aged wife.

RALPH LEAVELL
Jeffersonville minister and civic leader dies
Ralph Leavell Sr. served 33 years at Jeffersonville church
By PAULA BURBA
pburba@courier-journal.com
The Courier-Journal
.....The Rev. Ralph Leavell Sr., who served as pastor of Indiana Avenue Missionary Baptist Church in Jeffersonville, Ind., for 33 years, died Monday at Clark Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was 64.
.....Leavell worked days at General Electric's Appliance Park while attending theology classes at Simmons Bible College in Louisville in the 1960s and '70s to earn his bachelor's degree.
Less than six months after taking his first and only post as pastor in 1970, he had earned a reputation as a leader in the black community.
.....He told a Louisville Times reporter in May 1971, "I want to make the problems of the people my problems. ... I feel you've got to be part of them, you've got to rejoice with them and cry with them. I feel my job is to inspire the people, to get them concerned."
.....He had organized two protests that month to get more money from the Jeffersonville City Council to improve Claysburg, a predominantly black neighborhood on the city's northwest side.
.....Leavell was often described in those days as soft-spoken and modest — until he was standing before a group of people he wanted to empower. Then he became a fiery motivator.
.....By the summer of 1971, Jeffersonville had allocated $400,000 for a neighborhood redevelopment program in Claysburg, largely because of Leavell's dedication to the cause.
.....Not long after Leavell took over as pastor, his church became entangled in a deed dispute with Clark County. For nearly 30 years, the church fought for the return of its deed, which had been sold at a tax sale because of a bill from a previous owner. It was 1996 before the county returned the deed.
.....In 1966 an urban renewal project forced the church to relocate from Indiana Avenue to 14th and Locust streets, but the congregation retained the identity of its previous spot. The congregation burned the mortgage in November 1972.
.....Because of the deed dispute, no renovation was allowed until the case was settled. Soon after the settlement, though, Leavell led the congregation in an expansion project — a new sanctuary, dining room and finished basement — with members doing much of the work and with progress keeping pace with fund-raising.
....."We buy stuff as we get the money," Leavell said in 2002 when the new 420-seat sanctuary was about to be dedicated.

Rev. Ralph Leavell Sr.
JEFFERSONVILLE -- Rev. Ralph Leavell Sr., 64, passed away on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, 2004, at Clark Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. He served as the pastor of Indiana Avenue Missionary Baptist Church for 33 years. In 2002, he led his congregation into their new facility. Rev. Leavell earned a bachelor's degree in theology from Simmons University. He was a retired employee of General Electric, served as a moderator of the Southeastern District of Indiana Missionary Baptist Convention and held offices in the state and national Baptist Convention. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Judith Coleman Leavell. To this union was born four children, Ralph Leavell Jr. (Leslie), Glenda Leavell of Louisville, Kenneth Leavell (Darlene) and Timothy Leavell (Allison) of Jeffersonville. He is also survived by four granddaughters; one grandson; sisters, Bessie Palmer, Leoda Houston, Genora Birdsong of Louisville and Joecille Williams of Jeffersonville; brothers, Gary Leavell, Rev. Clifford Leavell of Jeffersonville, John Leavell of Louisville and Alvin Leavell of Birmingham, AL; and two sisters-in-law, Doris Meriweather and Patricia Montgomery, both of Lakeland, FL. Obituary: HOPKINSVILLE, Ky.
-- Rozelle Hamlett Leavell, a former Hopkinsville city councilman, educator and leader in the black community, died of heart failure Wednesday at Jennie Stuart Medical Center. He was 94.
.....Leavell began his 14-year career on the Hopkinsville City Council in 1969 after he became concerned about a drainage problem.
.....He had been a member of the Electric Plant Board, which operates Hopkinsville's power system. He was also active in the Hopkinsville Chamber of Commerce and worked with the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He was credited with engineering the improvement of East First Street, a major route in Hopkinsville. Hopkinsville's black cemetery was enlarged after Leavell pushed for the improvement and expansion. The new section was named the Rozelle Leavell Addition. Leavell studied at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama from 1911 to 1915. His diploma was one of the last signed by Booker T. Washington.
.....Leavell returned to Hopkinsville in spring 1915 and worked as a carpenter. Although he was qualified to teach, he could not find a job.
.....But after World War I, in which he served as a company clerk in a Negro unit, he taught manual arts at the old Attucks High School. Leavell taught 42 years, retiring when he was principal of consolidated Gainesville School in Christian County in 1966.
.....He is survived by a sister, Frances Bacon of Hopkinsville, and a brother, William A. Leavell. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Virginia Street Baptist Church in Hopkinsville, with burial in Cave Springs Cemetery. H.S. Runner Had Heart Defect
Web Editor: Tracey Christensen
Reported By: Jaye Watson
Last Modified: 8/17/2006 9:43:57 AM
…..A 16-year-old cross-country runner who died after collapsing on the track at Mundy's Mill High School in Jonesboro Tuesday had a congenital heart defect, an autopsy determined Wednesday. The county medical examiner said the defect would have been hard to detect.
…..Grief counselors were called to the high school Wednesday to console students after the death of Shadvina Leavell -- a junior. Officials said from the time of her collapse that they did not feel the heat was to blame for her death, especially since they had been very conservative with outdoor practices since a Rockdale County high school football player died of heatstroke at the start of the school year.
…..Add to that, a thunderstorm cooled off the track, leaving temperatures in the 80s. Leavell had been doing stretches inside the air conditioned gym before she headed out to the track with members of her team to walk.
….."They had not completed two laps of the track when the student, Ms. Leavell, fell and collapsed to the track surface," said Charles White, a spokesman for Clayton County schools. "The coach of the team saw her when she collapsed and rushed across the field to get to her. In the process, he was calling 911 to get medical help out here as quickly as possible."
…..The coach administered CPR until paramedics arrived and took over. They rushed Leavell to Southern Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
